Oooohhhhh.   Darren is gonna make an announcement of of more guests.    If I had to guess, I would guess maybe someone from Glee.   Jenna is in NYC for Waitress.  Or maybe Betsy Wolfe or Rebecca Naomi Jones.   Jeremy Jordan owes him 6 favors, although I don't know when Supergirl will start filming.
darrencriss: #ElsieFest. Labor Day. Coney Island. Link in Bio. Also, adding some people to the lineup and announcing next week. Any guesses?

This was interesting, as well as amusing.

Why Cabaret Was a Game-Changer for Darren Criss | playbill
via dailydarrennews

His thought process as a kid (about the show that changed his life, Cabaret):  "Woah, musical theater can be dark & sexy? Crazy!"

The show he would most like to see revived is Dogfight.  "Except it'll have a Broadway debut, pull a Hedwig and win a ton of awards."

The quality he admires the most in a person is wit.

This is consistent with what he has been saying, that success is defined as "being passionate & finding joy in what one does."

I don't know anything about Dogfight.  Anyone?

Edit:  According to Wikipedia, Dogfight is a musical with music and lyrics by Pasek and Paul, and book by Peter Duchan.  It is based on the 1991 film Dogfight.

From DarrenCrissArmy:

An article in Billboard, where Darren talks a bit about Elsie Fest 2016, as well as talking about his personal playlist for various talented folk.
Billboard wrote:Darren Criss Shares 'Elsie Fest 2016' Playlist, From Ariana Grande to Megan Hilty: Takeover Tuesday

It’s Takeover Tuesday time, where Billboard taps artists and tastemakers to compile their own playlists exclusive to Billboard’s Spotify account. We give the artists free reign to base the list on whatever subject they want and add whatever tracks they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.

This time around, singer/songwriter/actor Darren Criss offers up a personal playlist inspired by Elsie Fest, the outdoor music festival celebrating stars and songs from the stage and screen. The shindig, which was co-created by Criss and launched in 2015, will take place Sept. 5 at the Ford Amphitheater at the Coney Island Boardwalk in New York. The second annual show features Megan Hilty, Tituss Burgess, Criss, Rebel and a Basket Case (Evan Rachel Wood and Zach Villa), Jason Robert Brown, Lena Hall, Corey Cott, Pasek and Paul, Julie James and a special guest performance by Cynthia Erivo. A portion of the show’s proceeds will be donated to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Below, Criss shares his thoughts on the playlist, Elsie Fest and the many song-and-dance folks that populate the 22-track collection:

[Audio Playlist]

I’m a big fan of the rising popularity in performers who can cross-pollinate entertainment platforms, and even more so of the appetite that we seem to have for it nowadays. There’s a new breed appearing between what has historically only been associated with the theater scene and what we know as pop culture. Categories are becoming a little more fluid than they used to be -- I mean, it’s now cool to embrace one’s love of show tunes and standards, in the same way one would embrace pop music and nerdy internet humor.

More and more we’re seeing our favorite acts on late-night television showcasing their vaudevillian chops. How many times have we clicked on (insert favorite celebrity you didn’t know could sing/dance/play an instrument) on YouTube? God knows I spent enough times clicking away at those videos to the point where I thought, well, this needs to have its own music festival.

So, in the age of Broadway actors playing superheroes on television, movie stars doing internet comedy songs, pop stars releasing cabaret albums, huge singer-songwriters writing scores for musicals... Here are some star-studded folks who have tracks on Spotify that embody what Elsie Fest is all about. From the silver screen to the small screen, from the boob tube to YouTube, from the soundstage to center stage, this list could have gone on forever -- but I had to keep it short. Like I’ve said, it needed a festival.

1. Megan Hilty — “Second Hand White Baby Grand” (live): This was one of my favorite songs to come out of NBC’s Smash. Even if you don’t know anything about the show, this song is a gem and Megan’s voice is stunning.

2. Tituss Burgess — “Stop Calling Me”
: Before his TV-star turn as Titus Andromedon (on the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), he was Broadway’s Tituss Burgess, a powerhouse high tenor that never ceased to make audiences wonder how his voice could make that sound. And before “[url=http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/playlists/7486863/Peeno Noir]Peeno Noir[/url]” (possibly not safe for work), he made a few albums of his own. Here’s one funky-ass jam that still keeps me wondering.

It's from a new Netflix show called Stranger Things. I'm not sure if anyone from that show is a singer or if they just used the font because everyone (including Darren) is currently obsessed with the show.

From dailydarrennews:

Elsie Fest‏ Excited to announce guest performances by @calebrmclaughl1 & @GatenM123 #ElsieFest #BroadwayStuds @Stranger_Things

I haven't watched the show.   They look adorable.

And Liz Callaway is also added to Elsie Fest.  She has done a lot of work on Broadway, and was also the voice of Kiara in The Lion King II:  Simba's Pride, Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and the King of Thieves, and Anya/Anastasia in Anastasia.

An article about Elsie Fest 2016 in AXS.

AXS.com wrote:Labor Day entertainment: Darren Criss and Elsie Fest make Coney Island encore

New York’s outdoor music festival for show tunes, Elsie Fest, returns for its second year in a row on Labor Day, Monday Sept. 5, at historic Coney Island. The all-day entertainment extravaganza debuted last year along the Hudson River at Pier 97. This year, Elsie Fest attendees can spend the day soaking up the sun and the sand along the Boardwalk at Coney Island and catch the show which starts at 1 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m. in the Ford Amphitheatre. Festival tickets, including VIP tickets, premiere seating options and Meet and Greet packages are currently on sale.

Elsie Fest is the brainchild of Broadway and TV star Darren Criss (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” “Glee”), Jordan Roth, and Ricky Rollins who wanted to create an outlet for Broadway enthusiasts to gather and see some of their favorite artists from the stage and screen perform live in an all-day outdoor setting. Last year’s critically-acclaimed festival was a huge success. This year, Criss will be joined by Tituss Burgess (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), Megan Hilty (“Wicked,” “Smash”), Tony Award winners Lena Hall (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) and Jason Robert Brown (“The Bridges of Madison County”), Corey Cott (“Newsies”), indie band Rebel and a Basketcase (featuring Evan Rachel Wood).

Darren Criss is a proud University of Michigan theater grad and Tony-nominated fellow U of M alums Pasek and Paul (“A Christmas Story, the Musical”) will also perform, along with Julie James and Tony Award-winning special guest Cynthia Erivo (“The Color Purple”). Elsie Fest has also been known to turn out surprise guests. So, who knows who else might pop in to sing a song or two?

Broadway.com praised Darren Criss and last year’s festival calling the “Harry Potter” YouTube spoof star “clearly the next generation of stage star” and deemed Elsie Fest 2015 “easily the coolest Broadway event of the year.” That’s a pretty impressive assessment for a first-time launch.

The remarkable thing about Elsie Fest is that it takes a Broadway-style entertainment experience to a whole new level. It presents an outdoor concert festival vibe (which Criss previously dubbed Coachella for show tunes) in a kickin’ atmosphere with singalongs at Marie’s Beer Garden in between sets and of course, there will be food and drink galore.

Darren Criss alone is a dynamic, larger-than-life live performer who oozes passion for theater, show tunes and music in general. He is the only “Glee” cast member to have contributed original songs written specifically for the series one of which, “This Time,” earned him his first Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. Put him together with the other huge names on this year’s Elsie Fest performer lineup and lucky attendees are in for an explosive, multi-faceted musical treat.

Elsie Fest 2016 is sponsored by iHeart Radio, LiveNation, Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, and Jujamcyn Theaters. Ticket prices range from $30 - $60 each (before fees) for Gallery Seating, $30-$85 each (before fees) for Promenade Seating and $85-$125 each (before fees) for Orchestra Seating. VIP, Premium Seating and Meet and Greet Packages are also available at varying prices. Consult the Elsie Fest website for more information.

BWW Interview: Back for More- Darren Criss Reveals Details on the Return of the Great Elsie Fest!

Darren Criss, the mastermind behind the event, just checked in with BroadwayWorld to chat about all things Elsie...

I went back and looked at the interview I did with you last year at this time. You were obviously very excited, but you were also a little bit like, "I hope that we get through this alive"...

I know, and it seems we did! I think in every venture that I take on I'm just hoping and praying for a passing grade. I set my bar pretty low. There is definitely relief this year that we've done it before, once. It's a little less abstract this year. It's a little more of a concrete thing that we know we can do again. But it's also a new venue, so we'll see how it goes. We also took a gamble with the Labor Day thing, so we'll see how that goes!

[. . . ]

Obviously you being a big part of the planning and also performing, there's a lot of extra stress on you, even the day of. Was there a moment in the day last year, when you could breathe and say, "Ok, I think this is going to work"?

[. . . ]

I remember when Aaron Tveit was on stage last year. He was used to doing shows in a different atmosphere- obviously on TV or in a theatre playing a character, but he would also do shows at 54 Below or Joe's Pub... these small cabaret venues. I just watched him become a rockstar. There's a couple photos that I love of him turning into a total rock and roller up there, and it was really special because the audience felt it. I felt it at the side of the stage.

That was the moment where I really felt like: "This is what this is about." It's about giving, not only audience to have to experience, but the performers. It's a venue that they don't really get to perform at very often. So that was really a moment where I was like, "Ok this is cool." And obviously, Leslie Odom came after him. It's weird when you see something in your head for so long and then you see it happen in front of you and other people can see eye to eye with you. It's just such a relief.

Let's do a little lightning round.  Tell me me the first word that comes to mind for each of these performers. Megan Hilty...

Bombshell. But literally, not just the SMASH thing. She is a radiant bombshell.

Tituss Burgess.

Freakazoid singer.

Lena Hall.

Freakazoid singer [Laughs]. They're both crazy. It's tough not to use the same adjective. Rockstar.

Jason Robert Brown.

Iconic. Too soon? Is he too young for that?

Pasek and Paul.

Young blood. New kids on the block.

Corey Cott.

Charm-ball.

Rebel and the Basketcase.

The Edge. Edgy, sexy Hollywood.

Julie James.

Fan representation. I love Julie like so many people the country that listen to her and love her. She is the voice of the Broadway fan.

And of course, the most popular lady on Broadway right now, Miss Cynthia Ervio.

I don't have any words for her. It's just noises. Just noises of awe.

[. . . ]

There were so many cool moments last year. Can people expect as many collaborations and duets and all that kind of fun stuff?

Absolutely. And they can definitely expect some special guests beyond Cynthia that aren't necessarily announced. One of the fun things about Coachella is seeing the unexpected names and faces that pop out during certain moments that can only be seen at that event. Hopefully, people's sets and my set are songs they wouldn't be able to see anywhere else. I think that for every Elsie set I try and do at least a handful of songs that I've never done before, to make it really a special event for people that come.

And after this you are launching the HEDWIG tour!

Yeah! It's slowly dawning on me and I kind of feel guilty because my assistant director just texted me saying "Yay! We start rehearsal in two weeks!" I'm just like, "That's lightyears away." [Laughs] I've got so much stuff going on. I'm doing this play in New York next Monday; I've gotta rehearse for Elsie; I've gotta put my rehearsal schedule together; I have all these other personal obligations. There are so many things on my plate. I drive by the marquee in LA and it's already up there and I'm just like, "Man, I gotta get my shit together!"

You've some stuff to get though first.

Yeah I definitely do. But it's becoming more real to me that I have to brush up on the lady, herself.

Will this be the first real professional thing that you've gotten to do in your hometown?

Definitely to a degree. I did sort of professional theatre as a kid at a couple of different companies. I saw shows the Golden Gate Theatre all the time when I was a kid. So the fact that I'm doing it there is really special. It's the same with Lena [Hall]. Lena and I are both from San Francisco and anybody who's from there has an extraordinary amount of pride in being from that town, because it is so small and it's rare that people do grow up in the city proper, like she and I did. I'm excited to share it with all my drama teachers that couldn't make it up to New York and all my friends that stayed in the city that couldn't make it out.

Rewinding back to Elsie, what are you most looking forward to at this point?

I am sort of apprehensive because I want to make sure that the venue is cool. It is a new venue, and you have to figure out the schematics of the flow of people, but I am excited that it's in Coney Island. I like that it's a very 'New York' destination. I like that the large percent of people who I tell about the festival will say one of two things: "Oh, I've never been to Coney Island and I've always wanted a reason to go," or "Man, I haven't been there since I was a kid." Having an excuse to go down there is fun and I like that it's really a destination venue.

It will be the very tail end of summer, on Labor Day, and if you don't have any plans, what better way to spend it than come to Coney Island, an easy train ride? I'm excited for people to see the venue and I think it will be really fun mix of two different things that people love: the tradition of cabaret and live musical performances, but also Coney Island and the beach. Sign me up.

I love this quote from Darren:  "That was the moment where I really felt like: 'This is what this is about.' It's about giving, not only [to the] audience to have to experience, but the performers."

Looking at the part of the interview where he talks about his crazy schedule, it does raise a  question.   The fact that not only is Elsie Fest going to be an event every year, but that Elsie Fest will be an event that Darren plays a central role in terms of organizing, . . . one wonders what will Darren do when conflicts arise in the future?  There may be (hopefully) offers to be part of theater productions that run for a period of time, as well as film or TV offers, that overlap with Elsie Fest.   How will he prioritize?   Will he place as the highest priority that which will further his career along the most?  Or what he feels is his special passion project?  It's an interesting question.   The good thing is that if he faces such a dilemma, then it means he is getting some good offers.  Better to be faced with too many projects, than not many.   Plus, hopefully, somewhere down the line, he will get to the point where these organizational/administrative duties for Elsie Fest will be delegated completely to others.

Interview with Ralphie Aversa (95.5 PLJ)

Darren Criss On Elsie Fest, Hedwig And Funemployment
September 01, 2016

An article in Huffingtonpost.com.  Something about the article prevented me from copying and pasting it.   He did talk about how the new venue on Cooney Island and scheduling Elsie Fest to fall on the Labor Day weekend (when some folks go out of town) pose a few risks. It is nice that it falls on Monday, which is a day when Broadway performers have off.

I liked this quote from the Huffingtonpost article:
Huffingtonpost.com wrote:Darren Criss and Evan Rachel Wood Talk Elsie Fest; Broadway At The Beach

Criss told me last year that his goal with Elsie Fest is to take "the passion of fans and bring them and others together in a contemporary, pop-culture driven way" during a time of "transformation" for musical theater.

By reinforcing this commitment, Criss continues to prove himself beyond his own talent as a performer and the TV heartthrob singing sensation turned Broadway star.  He's convened a team joining the vanguards who are revolutionizing entertainment, creating a modern experience that combines pop culture with the tradition of theater.

This is cute.
People.com wrote:What These Stranger Things Kids Lack in '80s Know-How, They Make Up for with Enthusiasm

Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo may play two characters living in the ‘80s on Stranger Things, but that doesn’t mean they’re well-versed in what was trending that era.

PEOPLE has an exclusive video of the two young stars testing their ‘80s knowledge (or lack thereof) with former Glee star Darren Criss, 29, and as expected, they don’t … know much.

“If I could play anyone in the Harry Potter world I’d probably be like a really mellow Ravenclaw that never went to class. I’d be a renegade Ravenclaw. I feel like there was some other narrative that we probably missed out on because he slept through all the drama at Hogwarts and just kind of sailed by and barely passed his O.W.Ls. In real life I’m a Gryffindor, I couldn’t escape that if I tried. But I feel like everybody has two houses that they could fit into, and I’d say I’m a Gryffindor with Ravenclaw rising, or like a Ravenclaw moon. It’s not a real thing, but I’m just saying, Harry was divided between Gryffindor and Slytherin, and I would be divided between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. But I’d choose Gryffindor. Or it would choose me.”
