For one of the 10/8/16 shows:

I think this was for the Sunday (10/9/16) matinee show.

From the BroadwayWorld Message Board about the tour:

This person (A Canadian in NYC)  had seen Darren in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway.  The name is familiar to me ( I had read posts on the BWW message board, about Darren in Hedwig on Broadway), and I remember this person previously had some negative things to say about Darren's performance.   Anyway, he/she wrote this recently regarding Darren in the Hedwig tour.

A Canadian in NYC wrote:In the performance I saw, he was very weak and pitchy with the ballads.   Great with the hard rock and his Tommy was pretty close to the best (no-one beats JCM).  I won't be seeing him this time around, but great casting for San Fran and LA.  He'll draw the crowds out no problem - and have a TON of fun with his San Fran patrons I'm sure!

The thread of "Darren Criss to lead Hedwig tour"

And then, he/she saw Darren in the Sunday matinee show yesterday (10/9/16) in SF, and said this:

A Canadian in NYC wrote:Well I just got out of the matinee show and I wanted to write this before I see Lena tonight because I really do have to give Darren some love. I've been hard on him and his performance in past posts because I honestly thought he didn't rise to the standard. When I saw him at the Belasco his acting was great. When he sang the rock songs he did it well; but I faulted him on the ballads. IMO he was pitchy and breathless.  So I was disappointed.

Well hello Mr Criss and what have you been up to??? Because he was AMAZING today. I don't know what he's done and a part of me thinks maybe the heat is on with Lena starring with him. They have great chemistry. Whatever the reason he really was amazing. He's totally owning the role. Changing up the songs just enough to make it his own. His ballads were strong and emotional. I was so impressed. And I'm happy for him. To perform so strongly in his home town - kudos all around.

He has catapulted up to be my fave Hedwig at the moment... we will see what Lena has in store in a couple of hours!

The set is modest but works really well. They do a lot with the lights.  I actually preferred it to Belasco.

Managed to dish out some digs to Donald. Well done. Also the Blue Angels are in town for fleet week. Hedwig noted " I blew angels before; they were never that loud"

Emphasis added.

In the thread, "HEDWIG TOUR"

Note:  He/she also wrote a post highly praising Lena's evening performance on Sunday.   I have read a few comments about her performance last night , and it sounds like many of the people in attendance were fans of her (with one person commenting that for the performance she saw with Darren, it was a relatively quiet crowd that seemed to be people who were not familiar with the show, but who patronized SHN Golden Gate Theatre).   The person above (A Canadian in NYC) said that in part because of the adoring audience, Lena's performance felt like a party, a celebration of her playing the lead role of Hedwig well, a role that she had expressed wanting to play for a while.  Because she is playing a relatively small number of shows, eight (versus Darren's 50 or so shows on the tour), it's more likely that her shows will be more concentrated with her fans, and that fans of Darren will be spread more thinly over his larger number of shows.   For Hedwig and the Angry Inch, audience interaction/enthusiasm is so crucial.  (For those Darren fans seeing him in this tour, be sure to try to help him out by being interactive when the rest of the audience is quiet.)

I think for Lena, there will be several reasons why I am sure she will win rave reviews (both from the media and fan-based):   Because she had won a Tony for the role of Yitzhak in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway (and thus she is highly respected by both the media and Hedwig fans for such a great achievement); because she is beloved by Hedwig fans/Hedheads for having been a talented and constant presence for a year in the Hedwig family on Broadway (longer than any of the male actors who played Hedwig, except for John's presence in the Hedwig family); because she is one of the few women to play the lead role of Hedwig (I think only the second woman, after Ally Sheedy); because for the first time in this show's history, one actor is playing both the  role of Hedwig and Yitzhak in the same production; and of course, because her voice is most likely the most trained voice of all the actors who played Hedwig on Broadway, with a large range and great power (as for actors who played Yitzhak, I have to say Rebecca is truly impressive too).  I am sure her dramatic scenes are good as well, although I have not had the privilege of seeing her in the show (but I have a Hedwig friend who adores and reveres her).   To keep things in perspective as a fan of Darren, Darren continues to get wonderful comments from audience members, as well as good reviews in this tour, just as he did on Broadway.  If anything, he sounds like he has fine-tuned his performance, if one is to take the word of this person (A Canadian in NYC) who had mixed feelings about Darren after having seen him on Broadway, yet after seeing Darren in this tour, now reveres Darren's performance to the degree that he is near the top of this person's list of favorite Hedwig actors.

Sorry for being long-winded.  I just wanted to comment that this situation of having two different actors play the lead character in the same time period does feel unusual.  However, I am going to just enjoy the praise that Darren receives from media and from the audience, as well as enjoy how much Darren is relishing being able to play his dream role just a little longer.  :happy face  As for Lena, she is so talented and I am sure that the praise that she receives is well-deserved.  I am glad for her that she has the opportunity to shine in this role, like the men who played this iconic character on Broadway.

HEDHEADS ARE IN BLISS, DARREN CRISS AND LENA HALL ARE ELECTRIC IN THE ROCK MUSICAL OF THE DECADE.

Criss’s pitch perfect performance is a revelation and the opening night the sold out audience was jumping and whooping, shouting out the lyrics to the songs.

[. . . ]

The intensely charismatic Hedwig, and Criss fits the bill and more as the self-obsessed, spiteful, and gleefully punning anti- hero who proves herself heroic after all soldiering on through disappointment after disappointment. Criss’ story telling of Hedwig’s life is sincere and he captures that moment of childhood dreams as he shoves his head into his mother's oven.

[ . . . ]

Unlike the movie version, the live version succeeds as a very loud rock concert cabaret act, performed by a single character whose songs tell the story of his life. It’s a show containing a narrative, and personality, angst and passion that Criss is excellent at creating.

[ . . .]

“Wicked Little Town” shows off Criss’ tenor voice and his passion for this role of the lost hurt and bitchy Hedwig . . . Given a younger energy by a performer who has the voice, the talent, the glamor, and the dazzle the role demands. Her tragedy and triumph is iconic and this adds up to a brilliant treat for Hedwig fans.

Note:  The Vmedia site changed the title of the article for some reason, so I did as well.

Nice review!
Bay Area Reporter wrote:
From 'slip of a girly man' to rock star

San Francisco native Darren Criss was another performer to earn high praise during his Broadway run as the cross-dressing rocker on a bedraggled concert tour of self-flagellation, caustic revelations, and songs that both steamroll through the auditorium and pull an audience into a haunting ballad.

Hedwig, with the young dynamo Criss as its star at the Golden Gate Theatre, is launching a national tour in which he will recreate his role only during its San Francisco and Los Angeles runs. The same is true of Lena Hall, another SF native, who won a Tony Award in the role of Hedwig's woebegone husband, assistant, and thwarted performer. The two didn't get to perform together in New York, but it's an electric combination that makes the current show an even more special event.

[ . . . ]

Criss is too boyishly young to easily suggest a well-worn Hedwig, but his fearsome commitment to the role makes that increasingly irrelevant. In a series of outlandish wigs suggesting the different stages of Hedwig’s wobbly career, the diminutive Criss creates a character writ large as he belts, croons, struts, dances, and leaps about the stage. The humor both sardonic and of rim-shot variety flows easily, and he has the voice to convincingly sell all the various flavors of the Mitchell-Trask score.

Michael Collier Extraordinary Brilliant! Been a fan for a very long time. Just saw the SF performance last night and it does the original play and movie justice! It occurred to me that perhaps Tommy Gnosis is the imaginary alter ego of Hedwig. The male version of himself, the life he originally was destine to be?

New review.

Mill Valley Herald wrote:
'Hedwig' is glam rock concert disguised as theater

“Hedwig and the Angry Inch” comes as close to a hard rock concert as a theatrical production can.

I found it wonderful.

In dual senses of that word: outstanding and full of wonder.

[. . . ]

. . . The show was an exquisite two-person performance (ably assisted by four first-rate onstage musicians) — starring Darren Criss, who figuratively and literally sparkled in the title role on Broadway for 12 weeks last year, and Lena Hall, Tony winner who shone as Yitzhak, significant other who thrives on verbally abusing Hedwig.

Both are native San Franciscans who make the Bay Area proud.

I am still processing but I was blown away by Darren Criss…his Hedwig is so powerful and being on the front row allowed me to see the small movements, looks, expressions..I laughed, cried, and loved.

Afterwards we hung at the stage door and he came out pointed to me and said “You are a fucking rock star.” He told the crowd no selfies but when he got back around to us he took these!! #glitterqueenandmetalgodhoneymoon

Hedwig and the Angry Inch was so incredible last night! The songs were great and it was funny and Darren was just amazing. He is such a talented actor and singer, and to stand up on that stage and have the whole audience captivated for an hour and a half with the majority of it being just him shows such dedication, confidence and commitment. I was awestruck and literally don’t have enough words to describe him. Anyone who thinks he’s just a preppy kid from Glee who sings pop songs needs to see this show, because he’s so much more than that.

Darren was just so lovely afterwards, he took time to speak and sign things for everyone who was waiting at the stage door and was so humble and kind. When we told him we were from Scotland, he broke his no-selfie to take a photo with us to thank us for coming and gave my sister a hug. He was genuinely such a sweet guy, and I seriously can’t thank him enough. It’s always lovely when celebrities meet up to their expectations!

Hedwig and the Angry Inch was amazing! I went into it knowing little to nothing, but walked out with tears in my eyes and a smile on my face. It was an incredible work of art and unlike any play I’ve ever seen before!

Meeting Darren Criss was an absolute dream come true. I’ve tried to get tickets to see him in various things for the past seven years (no joke), but none of that mattered when he was standing in front of me and talking to me. While I was completely starstruck, it was so easy to talk to him and it felt as though I was talking to a friend, not some well known celebrity.

Thank you Darren for always being my teenage dream and the company of Hedwig for putting on one hell of a show!

A good review :happy face :

DailyActor wrote:
Review: 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' Starring Darren Criss and Lena Hall (Touring Production)

By Rebecca Fuller
October 17, 2016

Darren Criss steps into Hedwig’s high heels once again to bring to life the rock musical originally conceived by Stephen Trask and John Cameron Mitchell. Criss has previously played the role on Broadway in 2015, and now headlines this first leg of its U.S. tour, with Lena Hall reprising her role of Yitzhak, Hedwig’s long suffering husband.

[. .  . ]

As for Criss; the role of Hedwig is fiendishly difficult to play. She is bitter, angry, emotional and desperate to be loved and accepted. She has an acerbic wit, which, while it can be outright hilarious, can also be cruel and biting. For the most part, Criss nails this. He’s been very vocal about how much he loves this role and it shows; he is quick off the mark with well-rehearsed comebacks and gags, and a couple of new ones have been added since the show’s Broadway run, including a dig at his former Glee co-star, Lea Michele, as well as a joke about Donald Trump that had the audience cheering loudly.

Having seen him in the role on Broadway, I felt as though Criss played this one much more for laughs; which meant he sometimes failed to completely deliver on the stinging pain and hurt that Hedwig feels. Again, it doesn’t necessarily detract from what is essentially a fantastic show, but a little more emotional depth wouldn’t go amiss at times. All of that said, it’s hard to perhaps deliver that when an audience is so lively and attuned to humor as last night’s crowd was. Even the riskier jokes, such as the one about losing an Uncle at Auschwitz (he fell from the guard tower) got a big laugh rather than the stunned “ooh’s” that I’ve previously heard.

Criss’ vocals are once again spot on; this is a man who can deliver a stunning vocal performance time and again. Not all of the notes hit home each and every time, but it’s a negligible few that are dropped, and honestly, they’re delivered with such conviction that it fails to matter.

Criss embodies Hedwig completely; from the flawless German accent (that is much easier to understand than it was on Broadway), to the mind-boggling high kicks that make your eyes water just watching them. He is also fantastic at switching between the different characters during his narration; his Luther and Tommy Gnosis are particularly good and the final song; “Midnight Radio” is stunning.

Criss is entirely captivating from beginning to end, and delivers a truly enjoyable show which the audience in his native San Francisco thoroughly enjoyed.

Having seen Darren on Broadway, I'm interested in seeing if I agree with this reviewer, or agree with the person on the BroadwayWorld.com message board (A Canadian in NYC), about Darren conveying Hedwig's pain and hurt.    I felt an incredible amount of emotion from Darren in the Broadway show that I saw, especially during the crucial scene near the end of the show when Hedwig and Tommy have an important discussion and scenes that followed.  I felt so strongly Hedwig's sorrow and pain in Wig in a Box, Wicked Little Town, and Hedwig's Lament, and I felt her rage, bitterness and pain in Exquisite Corpse and Angry Inch.

Aside from that issue, this reviewer give Darren a wonderful review, calling him captivating, with stunning vocals.
