I've seen some folks on twitter (fans of Darren) say the same.

It's quite impressive that with really no big media blitz, he reached so high on the iTunes charts.  (The only media he used for publicity before the release of their music was an interview with Refinery 29, and an interview with Teen Vogue, as well as his cute treasure hunt marketing and Google Hang-out.)

I checked this morning and Computer Games' EP Lost Boys Life was # 1 on the U.S. iTunes Top 40 Alternative Albums.   Right now (9 pm Pacific Time), their EP is at # 2 (The Shins' Heartworms album, which was released today, is at # 1).

This morning Lost Boys Life was at # 8 on the U.S. iTunes Top 100 Albums.  Right now (9 pm Pacific Time), it is at # 13.

The EP is still doing very well!  thumbs up applause

Teen Vogue wrote:
Darren Criss and Brother Chuck Talk about Band Computer Games

March 9, 2017

Most people are familiar with Darren Criss as one of the breakout stars of Ryan Murphy's musical-comedy smash-hit, Glee. And while the show ended in 2015 after six critically-acclaimed seasons, Darren's been keeping busy with a starring stint in Broadway's Hedwig and the Angry Itch, as well as a new role in a forthcoming installation of American Crime Story. However, that's not all he has up his sleeve, as yesterday the triple-threat dropped his first EP, Lost Boys Life, under the moniker Computer Games. That said, he's not doing it on his own, as Computer Games is a joint effort with his older brother, Chuck, a seasoned musician in his own right, as well as a member of indie outfit The Freelance Whales.

A project the duo explains is long overdue, it's an indie gem filled with plenty of 80s pop inspiration and a dash of true DIY sensibility. So on the heels of Computer Games' official release, Teen Vogue caught up with both Criss brothers . . .

[. . . ]

TV: These songs, I'm assuming they're influenced by the 80s music you grew up listening to? How did you make sure you could incorporate elements of the stuff you grew up with accessible to your younger audience? How did you reconcile this age bias we’re talking about?

DC: We're definitely like early 80s, especially dance records. We're talking about Miami Sound Machine, Lionel Richie, Phil Collins. These are the guys that were really putting a lot of heavy rhythmic qualities to their music, and just layering a ton of electronic sounds on top of each other. That's kind of what we are doing.

[As for other influences,] Chuck and I have a band sensibility because we played in bands growing up. Chuck's experience with recording music is mainly with an indie label with an indie band, and it's very analog. Whereas, I have a foot in both ponds. I've dealt in the pop world — Glee was an excellent training camp, even though they were covers. It was an amazing training camp on how to produce pop vocals and to create things at that level. I always was very attuned to how those two things were different.

CC: I think a big thing was when I was in the indie world, my main criticism was that it tends, and it's by no means intentional, to be a little exclusive. And that sucks. I want our music to be inclusive and it's not. Like sometimes it feels like you have to get this reference in order to [be privy to the music].

[. . . ]

DC: It’s just music, man. If it makes you feel good, that's it. As a kid you would always get so protective of bands that I thought were cool and somebody that I didn't like, liked it and I didn't think it was cool anymore. I just wasted all this time and energy on the non-existent politics of what's cool, of which nobody's the president of. Of which there is no cabinet that says what's right or wrong. There's no rules. If you like it, you like it, that's it. You don't have to justify the things that you like. There's a song about that on our record.

[. . . ]

The cool thing about this project is that it is 100% indie and it's low stakes. We're just doing something we care about. I'd rather do something we care about and have it fail miserably, than do something that has high stakes, that's supposed to be this thing for people, and the labels really pushing hard, and I feel 'eh' about it, and it does well. And I feel 'eh'? That would be torturous, man. I'd have to really show face for something that I didn't believe in. That's even a worse curse. I'd rather crash and burn with a smile on my face.

TV: That said, why chose to release independently when obviously you would have no trouble finding a label.

DC:
It’s a really exciting time to be an independent artist. I've been saying this for a while. Even before you have the Chance [The Rappers] of the world, proving it to people who weren't as familiar with that plight. Chance is a great example of how powerful the democratic process of independent music consumption can be. He's the first independent artist to win a grammy. We're in different worlds but the process is the same. It's just doing something on your own time, your own rules.

[. . . ]

TV: Finally, what separates this particular project from your previous musical endeavors?

DC:
Everything. I, for all intents and purposes, have no other musical endeavors out there. Other than StarKid. Which was my big break, which was this YouTube comedy company. I wrote music for them. That's like musical theater songs. That's completely different gear of my brain, which I love, it's just a different animal. I put out a really low-fi, pretty crappy singer/songwriter EP when I was 22 because I needed to make money...It was called, Human. It was not crappy but, it's not well recorded. I just needed to record something.

CC:
It's a lot better than you give yourself credit for.

DC:
I wish it was better but, that's the artist curse that will always be held ...It's just an iTunes. That was the last time I put anything out. The only thing else that people might know music from is whatever I sang on Glee. For all intents and purposes, this is the first indie music [release], for me, which is wildly exciting. That’s why I like that we're Computer Games. It's a clean slate, carte blanche for both of us. If people don't know [The Freelance Whales], or don't know Glee, or don't know StarKid, and they just hear this music.

CC:
For me, it was an opportunity to write something more pop-centered. I just do love pop music but, I was coming from a world where I felt like I have to write more exclusive music like I talked about before. It was great to just do something, no apologies, with a great pop vocalist [gestures to Darren]. It's exciting to work in that medium.

DC:
I will say that what's cool about this is that we are the outlier in that sense that if everyone's running away from trying to be lame, we're embracing whatever that is. That's its own discussion. We're trying to be outliers by being the, "F*ck it. This is fun. Let's do the fun stuff."

That was a fascinating interview.  Gives us an idea of what Darren feels about being an independent indie artist and about the pressure exerted by record labels.  You also recognize one of Darren's long-time messages, which is be yourself, do what you like, regardless whether it's "cool" or not, and don't let anyone else dictate who you should be.   Also love Chuck's sweet support of Darren and his EP Human (which I love and have to disagree with Darren about that EP.  Although you could tell some of the songs' lyrics were written by someone quite young, the lyrics were sweet.  And the melodies were very inviting, very hummable and singable, very catchy).

The Billboard article mentions that The Elev3n did production on Lost Boys Life.  Darren paralleled their working relationship (two of them are brothers) with his and Chuck's collaboration. It sounds like they added instrumentation after CG wrote the songs.

I've only had time to listen to the whole EP once. I feel like I need more than I got, like at least two albums' worth. :cheeky I was hoping for Chuck to sing lead somewhere, but I could tell that he wrote on these songs. I did appreciate having the demo version of Lost Boys Life because I could hear the chord progression better with just the piano. After the first playthrough, I slightly preferred Every Single Night over the other two, but I think that will change upon further review. celebration dance! love the music

One thing about all the interviews: whenever the headlines say "brother Chuck", it makes me think of the TV trope "Brother Chuck". sad face Also, I wish Darren wouldn't use the word "festering" to describe anything he does. That makes it sound like his past music has become a cancer, which I doubt is the case. Albatross, maybe, but not something toxic.

I think the band was Darren's usual Umich friends and these are just (Mia's) friends who came to the show.
The guy in red is Cole Ramstad, he played with Darren at other events (Hedwig Broadway opening party and a Fox Upfronts thing iirc). Pretty sure the two on the left are members of one of Mia's former bands.

Just for some context, this is missing a bit in the beginning where Darren was "complaining" about how early it was and that it might not be the the best idea to try to sing this song because they stayed out late. Elvis stopped them and said Darren was being too "negative", which Darren disagreed with, so when Elvis made them start over he went for this silly introduction.

Hi DaisiesAndLilies,

Thanks for pointing out that in the Billboard article, Darren mentioned The Elev3n.  It's great that they give the production group credit.  :happy face   How interesting that two of the talented guys in The Elev3n are brothers too.

@DaisiesAndLilies wrote:I feel like I need more than I got, like at least two albums' worth.

haha.  We've been waiting a long time for Darren's music, so I can understand that.  For me, when I finished listening to the EP for the first time, I also thought, "That was great!  Now, I want more."   :amused

I was wondering if Chuck would sing lead.  I didn't follow the Freelance Whales, so I don't know who did vocals in the group.  Maybe at some point, he will sing lead --cross fingers they release another EP or album.  The song,  "Lost Boys Life" sounds like something Darren would write.  Darren mentioned in the Elvis Duran interview that Chuck wrote "Every Single Night"?   I agree in that I did think that Chuck had a strong influence, especially with "We Like It" and "Every Single Night."

I'm glad I bought the EP because I really enjoyed listening to Darren perform "Lost Boys Life" on the piano.

Of the 3 songs, "Lost Boys Life" is my favorite.  :happy face  I can see how many folks would hold "Every Single Night" as their favorite, a fun dance song.

Yes, I do wish the headlines wouldn't read "Darren Criss and brother Chuck."   If they release another EP or album, it some point, I imagine they will drop the "brother Chuck."   It will just be Computer Games, just the Criss brothers.  ha.  Darren sometimes can choose more positive terminology than what he comes up with during interviews.   (Interviews can be tough; it helps to think prior to the interviews of what language you want to use.  For example, in his new iHeartRadio performance, I think Darren said something like "Let's stick to the lame stuff that makes us smile ..."  I probably wouldn't use the word "lame."   Maybe say something like, "The song expresses our belief that you always should embrace whatever makes you happy, regardless of how others may think about it."  I like the phrase that they are using in interviews, "unapologetically fun."  )   But anyway, back to your point, DaisiesAndLilies, "festering" was an interesting choice of words.  To me, it was an instance of being very open, and giving us an idea of how being hindered by the record label about his music on that album that he was working on while signed with Columbia, really led to a less-than-ideal, frustrating, possibly smothering experience.

Hi Lin.  :happy face
@Lin wrote:I'll believe it when I see it.  But yay for having yet another thing to look forward to.
ha!  I'm really, really looking forward to it.  :love

Thanks for the info about the peeps in that pic with Mia.  :happy face

haha!  Thank you so much for that background.  I love that there was this funny back-and-forth between Elvis and Darren.  They have an easy, bantering kind of chemistry.  Speaking of terminology that one uses in interviews, Elvis is the perfect example of how he consistently tries to frame things in a positive light.  I remember the first time Darren was doing a media blitz for the first Elsie Fest, that Elvis often re-framed Darren's words a bit by stressing how successful and amazing Elsie Fest is going to be (not hopefully will be).   At the same time, although I think "interview skills" can be a huge boost for how an artist represents his work, I also realize that  Darren has got to be over-the-moon happy about releasing their music (as well as tired from all the excitement and the performance on Wednesday night), so I can understand if he does not always choose the most ideal words (as long as he continues to improve in terms of interviews; I know they are very challenging).

Of course Darren decides to release music when I was out of the freaking country with unstable wifi! I got the notification from his Twitter account, and was able to buy it, but the connection was so wonky that I couldn't download the EP until I got back to the states. Luckily I was going home the next day.

I love it so much. My absolute favorite is Lost Boys Life. I was surprised it doesn't appear that Chuck is doing any singing, but hoping that's only because Darren is acting as the face of the group for now since he's more famous and once the group takes off more, Chuck can sing too. The indie route suits him much better. While I did like the new songs on the Listen Up tour, they didn't feel as "Darren like" as the songs on Human and this new EP. Speaking of Human, I don't think Darren really thinks it was crappy. He likes to be self deprecating and the production wasn't great. The songs themselves are great and still hold up to this day.

In this Youtube/Instagram/Snapchat heavy world I think we are going to see more and more artists choosing to be independent and having success with it. I'm excited for all this promo he's doing! I need to still catch up with all the videos. Looking forward to his new multiple TV roles coming up too. Looks like he's going to be very busy this year.

BTW, I actually am not surprised the album peaked high on Itunes. I think Darren has a VERY loyal fanbase, due to the fact that he's so great with his fans. I also noticed a month or so ago that despite not having any "huge" projects announced yet, that his followers were increasing and now he's almost at 2 million.

I like the four songs, especially Every single night. It's "layered" (I quote Darren) and it's what I like. As I've said before, I'm not a big fan of the music arrangements on his former EP.

I love the lyrics video. I'm younger than Darren but I love the graphics of old video games. I also love the fact there's a link between the music style and the visuals. The whole thing is pretty coherent.

I've read/watched the interviews and I particularly like the story behind We like it. Btw, I didn't know Darren didn't like Human that much. Maybe it's another thing I've missed :amused

ha!  I'm glad you got back to the U.S. so that you could play the EP.   That must had been frustrating!

I'm so glad that you love the Lost Boys Life EP, Tash!  heart

Yes, I think part of the reason why Darren is taking the lead on the vocals is because he is the most well-known.  Hopefully like you said, after the band becomes more well known, Chuck will sing lead too.   :happy face

I always felt that Darren was more of an Indie kid than a pop performer, based on his music on  Human, and based on all the Indie bands he loves that he tweets his support for (although he also tweets about the big pop names too).   I agree that the music of Lost Boys Life just seems more in line with Darren.  However, two songs from the Listen Up tour that really did seem more Indie than pop, were "I Don't Mind" and "Once Upon a Time."  I loved both songs, especially "Once Upon a Time."

Yes, I think I misinterpreted what Darren said about Human.   In the Teen Vogue article, Darren clarified that he felt Human was not well-recorded/produced well.   I love that Chuck said in that interview that the Human EP is a lot better than Darren gives himself credit for.   I hold a great deal of affection for that little EP, and its songs.  I agree, they hold up to this day, nice lyrics, great melodies, and of course, Darren's lovely voice.  I remember when I first bought the EP and started playing it at home, my husband commented that Darren has an interesting voice.  :happy face

@Tash wrote:

Completely agree with this, Tash, and I think it's a wonderful thing.  It will encourage smaller artists to release their music, without depending on and being tied to a record label, with which they may have artistic differences.  And the terms of these contracts with record labels can be very long, so if a music artist and a record label differ on the musical direction of an album, that artist will be stuck with the label for a long time, possibly stuck in limbo (in Cal, I believe contracts with record labels can be as long as 7 years).

I know that many fans truly appreciate how kind and giving with his time Darren is with them.  His kindness is a large part of why I adore him and will remain a fan.  heart heart heart

Jeremy wrote:I like the four songs, especially Every single night. It's "layered" (I quote Darren) and it's what I like.

I was guessing "Every Single Night" would be your favorite of the EP songs, Jeremy.  I think you had mentioned before that you like 80s music, and that song definitely has an 80s feel (Lionel Richie, Miami Sound Machine).

Jeremy wrote:I love the lyrics video. I'm younger than Darren but I love the graphics of old video games. I also love the fact there's a link between the music style and the visuals. The whole thing is pretty coherent.

Yes, I thought that was pretty cool too.

About Human, I think it's more that Daren felt the EP wasn't produced as well as it could have been.  I believe Darren and his friend (Chris Lorentz?) recorded the songs in one of their bedrooms.  Lilikoiluv told me the story (but of course, I forgot the details  Razz ).  To me, the production is not as important as the lyrics, melodies, and the vocals, including the emotion expressed by Darren in his vocals.

So some industrious fans of Darren discovered that you could request "Every Single Night" on many radio stations.  I agree with Vicasaurus that Elvis Duran most likely helped place the song on the stations' playlist.  Elvis is such a fantastic friend of Darren!

From dailydarrennews:

Vicasaurus wrote:So I was doing radio requests for another fandom I'm in on Mediabase and I just got so excited cuz Every Single Night is available to request at a lot of stations. I think iHeart Radio may have added it to their stations playlists, so if fans want they can maybe try requesting it on their local radio stations! It's pretty awesome for them to get added as indie artists, bless Elvis Duran lol

Darren has been sharing his thanks to fans around the world on Facebook, visible only to folks in each country. USA was up today (March 13).
Darren Criss Army

Darren and Chuck would like us to buy some shirts.  I'm guessing since their songs were available on iTunes, that some people opted not to buy the CD that comes with their shirts (I bought the shirt/CD combo, but speaking only for myself, I have to say as one of Darren's older fans, it's a little awkward for me to wear shirts with teenagers' or kids' photos on it--even if they are cute--I very much prefer to wear shirts with art work or a design/emblem on them :talking ).  Haha.  Hashtag #SaveChuck:amused

From Darren Criss Army:

I just finished watching Darren on Conan (March 14) a few minutes ago.  I thought Darren did very well.   My favorite part was when he fan-boyed out when Conan was talking about and holding what looked like Computer Games' Lost Boys Life (super-sized) album.    Darren was so cute.   He was so excited about Conan talking about the EP.  Darren did a shout-out to Chuck about how this was a dream come true for Darren and Chuck, for Conan to hold and to talk about the EP by Darren and Chuck

I like the part where Conan licks the Lost Boys Life EP (as a nod to Darren's revelation that he licked the face of a Hedwig audience member).  :amused

The songs are great! Love the retro vibe to them. Really fun and upbeat. This is so much more Darren than those songs of his tour. No wonder he scrapped those. Delighted that we're also getting a DC album.

Btw, it's so cool that the ep is doing so well. You go Criss Bro's!

I'm glad you love the retro vibe, dusty.  I thought you would.   And yes, so cool the EP is doing well and also so great we hopefully will get Darren's singer-songwriter album!
