From dcriss-archive:

It seems Darren will be soon announcing how to buy pre-sale tickets to Elsie Fest 2017.  (I hope that he doesn't do this tomorrow, the same day as he either makes an announcement about his album, or that he actually releases his album, assuming he does either.  I feel that it would be most ideal if he places the focus on his album first, and then later does the pre-sale for Elsie Fest 2017.)

haha.  I guess I was totally wrong when I guessed Darren's big announcement today was about his solo album/EP.  It was about Elsie Fest 2017!  I think what threw me off was that in previous years, he didn't color his Elsie Fest announcement in so much mystery, plus he had mentioned he was going to release his solo album this year (and then he updated his pics on his social media and Youtube too).

Anyway, I think it still is a very good possibility that Darren will release his album in 2017.  :fingers crossed :fingers crossed :fingers crossed

Really nice that Elsie Fest 2017 is being held in Central Park!   That's very cool, and much more central a location than last year in Brooklyn (although I heard the shade and the individual chairs were very nice, that the Brooklyn site was a nice venue).  Central Park means less traveling for many peeps already in NYC. thumbs up

Darren Criss Announces 3rd Annual Elsie Fest, Covers 'I Dreamed a Dream'

Darren Criss’ annual Elsie Fest music festival is returning to New York for its third year, and to help celebrate the announcement, Criss dropped a cover tune of the Les Miserables’ classic, “I Dreamed a Dream.”

Watch Criss perform a stripped-down version of the tune below:

The release of “I Dreamed a Dream” continues a busy year for the Emmy Award-nominated Criss. Earlier in 2017, he and his brother Chuck Criss teamed up as the pop duo Computer Games and released the Lost Boys Life project. In addition, Darren has been busy filming The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, in which Criss co-stars as Versace’s killer, Andrew Cunanan.

Elsie Fest, an outdoor music festival celebrating stars and songs from the stage and screen, will return for its third go-round on Oct. 8 at the SummerStage in Central Park in New York. This will be the first time the event will be held in Central Park, after being staged at Coney Island in 2016 and Pier 97 in 2015. Pre-sale tickets to the show become available Aug. 1.

The lineup for the 2017 Elsie Fest has not been announced, but previous performers at the event include three-time Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown, three-time Emmy Award nominee Tituss Burgess, Tony and Grammy Award winner Cynthia Erivo, Tony nominee Megan Hilty, Tony and Grammy winner Leslie Odom Jr., Academy Award and Tony-winning songwriting team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Tony winner Lea Salonga, Aaron Tveit and Evan Rachel Wood.

I'm late to the party, but lots of Elsie Fest info today, as was expected.

So as was hinted by The Elvis Duran Show:   Lea and Alan Cumming are headlining (along with Darren), with Ingrid Michaelson and Norm Lewis as guest stars.  Elvis Duran will be hosting.  Aw, I remember Darren talking before about how Ingrid Michaelson was a large influence to him, musically.  And Norm Lewis (gosh, his voice is gorgeous) is a respected Broadway star.  He also performed in The Little Mermaid concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles with Darren.  :happy face  Info about the hours:  Doors open at: 5:00 PM.  Show: 6:00 PM (ends at 10:00 PM).   Source:  http://smarturl.it/elsie   The TodayTix site says the concert running time is 5 hours.  https://www.todaytix.com/shows/nyc/6603-elsie-fest

I actually think Darren did better in this than the YouTube video, because his high notes sound better here (or maybe he didn't quite start as high here as in his YouTube video?  Plus, he probably was more relaxed here).   He doesn't seem to strain at the high notes, like he did a bit in the YouTube video.  I hope he warms up a lot before his performance on the Today Show

Alan Cumming, Lea Michele & Darren Criss to Headline 3rd Annual Elsie Fest

8/1/2017

Start spreading the news: Alan Cumming, Lea Michele and Darren Criss will headline the third annual Elsie Fest music festival on Oct. 8 in New York. The trio of stars will be joined at Central Park’s SummerStage by special guests Ingrid Michaelson and Norm Lewis. The event -- which celebrates stars and songs from the stage and screen -- will be hosted by radio personality Elvis Duran.

"Being a ‘musical theater fan’ has never been just about loving musical theater,” says Criss, co-founder of Elsie Fest, in a press statement. “It’s about loving the things in pop culture that inspire it; from the actors, recording artists and personalities, to the songs -- which not only include Broadway and Great American songbook classics, but hits from film, TV, radio and the Internet. Elsie Fest brings all of that together in one place. It’s a pop culture cabaret."

. . . Slated for special guest performances are Michaelson (who has notched five top 40-charting albums on the Billboard 200 and is currently on Broadway in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) and Tony and Grammy nominee Lewis.

Pre-sale tickets to the show went on sale today (Aug. 1) via ElsieFest.com, while the general on-sale begins on Aug. 4 on Ticketfly.com.
Additional performers and guests are slated to be announced at a later date.

Jeremy Jordan Joins Elsie Fest 2017

August 4, 2017

Tony- and Grammy-nominated singer and actor Jeremy Jordan (Newsies, Smash) has joined the lineup of performers for Elsie Fest 2017. He joins the previously announced headliners Darren Criss, who co-founded the outdoor music festival, Lea Michele (Spring Awakening), Alan Cumming (Cabaret), Ingrid Michaelson (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812), and Norm Lewis (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street).

The festival, which returns for a third year with an all-new roster of Broadway stars and showtunes, will take place October 8 at Central Park SummerStage. Additional performers and guests will be announced at a later date.

Tickets are now on sale at ElsieFest.com. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fight AIDS.

Elsie Fest is executive-produced by Criss, Ricky Rollins, Jordan Roth, and Dr. Sidney J. Stern.

Nice interview with Broadway.com.  Darren's doing so well with these interviews!  The only thing I would add is for Darren to talk a bit about the outdoors festival atmosphere of Elsie Fest (including Marie's Crisis piano bar, food trucks etc), as he did in other interviews (but maybe it's safe to assume viewers of Broadway.com already know this).  :happy face

I Dreamed a Dream – Darren Criss

Ever-so-dreamy Darren Criss has a talent for stunning teenage fangirls and music lovers alike with silvery vocals fit for a Disney Prince – funny enough, the guy actually shot to cyber-fame through his acoustic YouTube cover of The Little Mermaid’s ‘Part of Your World’. Last week, the Very Potter Musical star was back at it with another classic cover for fellow thespians, Les Miserables’ ‘I Dreamed a Dream,’ a take with only his golden voice and guitar for a very calming, albeit solemn performance. If by any chance you had an (oddly specific) craving for a show-tune with an acoustic twist, these two and half minutes are all you need.

I think about going to the concert. A show with Darren, Lea and now Jeremy is really tempting but I don't know yet if I would be able to go.

Btw, do we get the setlist before the concert ? I don't remember.

I also want to say about "I dreamed a dream" that I prefer the Today Show version to the studio version.

Oh wow.  That would be so fun, Jeremy!  You should do it!   How often are you going to get Lea, Darren, and Jeremy together in one concert?

I don't remember them disclosing the setlist before the concert.  Does anyone else remember?

I still like the YouTube version a bit more, because I can hear more emotion in his voice.  But I also love The Today Show version, because of the various instruments--which sound so lovely and was fun to watch--as well as I think he did better on the high notes (more control and power)on The Today Show version.  But they both are lovely!

BTW, for anyone interested, the iTunes version of "I Dreamed A Dream" also has the lovely instruments.  :happy face

Speaking of Les Miz, I also had Darren Criss on Seth Speaks and he was talking about the third edition of Elsie Fest, his big New York cabaret festival. This year it’s in Central Park and he has some amazing guests lined up! Look at ElsieFest.com. Also, (here’s the Les Miz connection) he’s released an acoustic/folk version of “I Dreamed A Dream.” I didn’t know he played guitar so well! Listen!

Throwing in my suggestion into the Suggestion Box for next year's Elsie Fest.  Please have Betsy Wolfe in next year's Elsie Fest and Rebecca Naomi Jones too!

In the interview, Seth and Darren briefly talked about Seth's event, "Voices for the Voiceless:  Stars for Foster Kids," which supports the organization, You Gotta Believe.  You Gotta Believe is "New York City’s only non-profit dedicated to connecting older youth in foster care with permanent families before they age out of the system alone."

Darren sang two songs as an auction item for this charitable event in the first year of this event.  Darren sung "Teenage Dream," and "Close to You."   This little girl is so cute; she was so shy.  Darren was very sweet to her, and was very charming.

Where Can Broadway Fans Let Loose and Get 'Rowdy?' Darren Criss Has the Answer

August 8, 2017

The third annual Elsie Fest, which celebrates music from stage and screen, will take place October 8.

Elsie Fest celebrates its third consecutive year this fall, and co-creator Darren Criss wants you to be something you should never be in a Broadway theatre: “rowdy.”

The outdoor celebration gives Broadway fans the opportunity to experience their favorite stars in an environment where they can be themselves; audiences aren't tied to their seats here.

This year, the musical theatre-centric festival will take place October 8 at SummerStage in Central Park.

“There’s an enthusiasm with the fan community of musical theatre that we’re so blessed with that lends itself to being rowdy and enthusiastic,” Criss tells Playbill. “I wanted to give them the venue to do that.”

This applies to the performers as well: “The Lea Salongas and Aaron Tveits of the world, they play Carnegie hall and 54 Below and these very lush joints. It was really fun for me to see them onstage [last year] in a rock-and-roll setting, which is something they’re not used to either… Everybody kind of wins.”

Criss is set to headline the event alongside his Glee co-star and fellow Broadway alum Lea Michele and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming. To Criss, these collaborations and reunions are what make Elsie Fest so special. Glee fans can expect a collection of songs Criss and Michele never got to sing together on the show.

Elsie Fest 2017 will also feature special appearances by recording artist Ingrid Michaelson (currently making her Broadway debut in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) and Tony nominees Norm Lewis and Jeremy Jordan. Additional performers and special guests will be announced at a later date.

“I always get these delusions of grandeur of putting people with other people,” Criss says of the starry lineup. “I want Ingrid to sing with everybody; I want to sing with Ingrid because I’m a huge fan of hers. It’s so cool when artists join the lineup and they get really excited. Like, ‘Would so-and-so be interested in doing a song together?’ 99 percent of the time, people are like, ‘Oh, hell yeah.’ In what other world would they be able to that?”

Over the past two years, Elsie Fest has featured composers such as Jason Robert Brown and the Tony- and Oscar-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul—writers fans don’t typically have the chance to see sing their own scores.

Criss has dreamed up a few composers he’d like to see take the stage: “Stephen Sondheim, I’d love it if you played a couple songs.” He also mentions the late Howard Ashman, who collaborated with Alan Menken on Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Little Shop of Horrors.

“If Howard was still with us, I think he’d be the kind of guy that would not only dig this kind of festival, but he’d be a person that I’d love to have up there. The stories he could tell alone in between numbers would just be amazing.”

Tickets for Elsie Fest, co-created and produced by Criss, Ricky Rollins, and Jordan Roth, are now on sale at ElsieFest.com. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fight AIDS.

Pop Shop Podcast: Darren Criss Talks Elsie Fest's 'Pop Culture Cabaret,' Plans Surprise Duet at Show

Welcome to the new episode of the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, your one-stop-shop for all things pop on Billboard's weekly charts. In addition, you can always count on a lively discussion about the latest pop news, fun chart stats and stories, new music, and guest interviews with music stars and folks from the world of pop.

Casual pop fans and chart junkies can hear Billboard co-director of charts Keith Caulfield and Billboard music editor Jason Lipshutz every Tuesday on the Pop Shop Podcast, which can be streamed on Billboard.com or downloaded in iTunes (click here to listen to the previous Tuesday’s edition of the show on Billboard.com).

On the latest show, not only do we welcome back original Pop Shop host Jason Lipshutz (more on Jason’s return in a moment!), but we also boast an interview with friend-of-the-podcast Darren Criss. The singer/songwriter/actor called in to the show to chat about the third annual Elsie Fest music festival, which will take place on Oct. 8 at New York’s Central Park SummerStage.

Criss, who co-created the festival, will co-headline the concert this year, alongside his former Glee cast member Lea Michele and Alan Cumming. They’ll be joined by special guests Jeremy Jordan, Norm Lewis and Ingrid Michaelson. The show celebrates the music and stars from the stage and screen, and previous lineups have boasted performers like Tony Award and Grammy Award winner Cynthia Erivo, Tony nominee Megan Hilty, Tony and Grammy winner Leslie Odom Jr. and Aaron Tveit.

“Elsie is really a pop culture cabaret,” Criss tells Billboard (listen below). “It's not just a Broadway thing. Because being a musical theater fan is so much more than just musical theater. It's about loving all the things that inspire it. And so when you start looking at it from that way, you start realizing how huge of a spectrum this lineup can cover.”

In the Pop Shop Shop podcast, Criss also says to expect a previously unheard duet from him and Michele at Elsie Fest. “Although Lea and I have sung many times (together) before, I think what we'll aim for is to do a song that no one has ever seen us do together. I'm all about that. I encourage the artists to get real excited about that.”

Criss says that his ultimate future goal with Elsie Fest is to curate a lineup of performers that all have a true love for musical theater – from Broadway-and-showtunes leaning artists like pop icon Barbra Streisand to rock gods like Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong.

“You're like, 'what do they have to do together?' Criss asks. “Well, they both have a love for Broadway, and they both have a deep connection to it, and that's so cool.” (Streisand is a two-time Tony nominee and a winner of a Special Tony Award. Armstrong wrote the book and lyrics for the Broadway musical American Idiot.) “That's the headspace that I want people to get into,” Criss says. “It's not just Broadway performers that have ended up in TV and film, it's people from all walks of the superstar life.”

I enjoyed that Podcast, especially being able to hear Darren talk extensively about his vision and hopes for Elsie Fest. I was impressed with his thoughts about his vision for possible future guests that were summarized above. His vision has such a wide scope that it would truly help Elsie Fest continue develop into an incredible event that would attract a wide range of people as it grows! thumbs up I loved that Max seemed a surprised and impressed at the scope of his vision too.

Our hometown girl Auli'i Cravalho has just been announced as a special guest at Elsie Fest! :so happy

What a wonderful lineup of performers they have this year!

I am truly gutted that I will be missing my chance to experience Elsie Fest by just THREE DAYS!!! When planning our trip, we covered two weekends to hopefully catch Elsie Fest's date when it was announced, but alas, it was not to be. We Leave New York on October 5th. :cry  As I've said before, Darren really needs to do a better job of coordinating his events with me. l :laughing  :cry

BTW, have you made a decision about attending, Jeremy? What a stellar lineup.  I hope you get to go!  :fingers crossed
