The Ryan Murphy anthology series returned this season, reimaging one of the most shocking murders in American history. Though the show features a cast that includes Oscar winner Penelope Cruz, Ricky Martin, Edgar Ramirez, and Judith Light, the series belongs to Darren Criss as spree killer Andrew Cunanan. Criss captures the imbalance of the character, making him all the more despicable. While the series in no way absolves Cunanan of his crimes, it also has a preoccupation with the rampant homophobia of the time, ranging from Donatella Versace’s disgust with her brother’s lover, to the FBI claiming Cunanan had evaded escape by posing as a woman (yes, it really happened). This opera of a show plays just as infuriating as it does tragic.

This year’s Emmy nominations are almost upon us, and with the possibilities more scattered than usual, so are our opinions on who deserves to get a nod. So, with voting now underway, Variety’s TV critics got together to hash out their favorite contenders and — more importantly — point to some of the stellar performances that might not have enough support or clout to be recognized, but really ought to be.

OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES

D’Addario: We’ve gotten spoiled in recent years—the era of “Big Little Lies,” “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” and “Fargo”—such that this year seems pretty widely considered “weak.” There are plenty of credible nominees that exist in a slightly older mode: The tony TV literary adaptation. I was pleasantly surprised by both Netflix’s “Alias Grace” and Showtime’s “Patrick Melrose,” series that assay widely-respected recent novels with elegance, but verve, too. They may not be quite as edgy as the limited series that have bloomed in recent years, but they weren’t “Masterpiece Theatre,” either.

Framke: I’ll freely admit that this category doesn’t excite me much this year, with a couple exceptions. One is “Alias Grace,” which crawled under my skin for days after I finished it. The other is “American Crime Story: Assassination of Gianni Versace,” which didn’t get nearly as much attention or adulation as “People vs. OJ,” but was slick and confrontational in a way that kept my attention.

LEAD ACTOR, LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE

Framke: Given your ambivalence towards “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” I’ll stump here for Darren Criss, whose performance just about chilled my blood with every blink. And on the complete opposite of the spectrum (and in what I’ll admit is a “no way in hell” nomination dream), I’ll say that Jimmy Tatro‘s surprisingly grounded “American Vandal” role deserves more attention than it got.

D’Addario: I’ll admit I didn’t vibrate on “Vandal’s” frequency. I admired Kyle MacLachlan’s sheer commitment to his “Twin Peaks” role(s) enough to hope he lands a nomination, but find myself rooting for “Patrick Melrose’s” Benedict Cumberbatch. The actor’s no stranger to the Emmys thanks to “Sherlock,” but his compelling, painful, redemptive journey through addiction and self-loathing on “Melrose” deserves notice.


SUPPORTING ACTOR, LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE

Framke: If the FYC campaigns are any indication, this might be Jeff Daniels’ race to lose, but his consciously hammy performance in “Godless” left me pretty cold. Instead, I find myself in a somewhat hilarious position that my middle school self would find perfectly appropriate: rooting for Ricky Martin’s heartbreaking performance in “ACS: Versace.” I will also happily accept Cody Fern’s.

D’Addario: Cody Fern was a genuine discovery in “Versace.” My vote, though, would go to Jason Ritter, putting his considerable charm towards risky and, eventually, genuinely scary use as a predator in “The Tale.” It’s a performance that walks close to the edge without losing balance.


SUPPORTING ACTRESS, LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE

D’Addario: If anyone onscreen in “Versace” earned a prize, it’s Penelope Cruz’s uncanny Donatella, balancing feral pain with the need to save face. In my dream world, Riley Keough’s sharp, dogged work in “Paterno” pays off, and Frances Conroy gets in for an eerie, brief appearance in “The Tale,” one that leaves a painful afterburn.

Framke: I see your Penelope Cruz and raise you a Judith Light — which might be one of my favorite sentences I’ve ever written. Bless TV forever and ever, amen.

Yes, that's possible.  And I really do appreciate the first part of what he said, where he stated that because he passes as white, that he will not encounter the same obstacles that people of color will face in the entertainment industry.    I feel he's being respectful of the experiences that people of color face, that he's being respectful by recognizing that there will be unique obstacles and grief that people of color unfortunately, will have to live through, and overcome, that he--as a person who passes as white--fortunately will not. 

It was the choice of words/the phrasing of the later part of the quote that has surprised me, but I feel like I am just repeating myself, at this point.

Filipino American actors Jon Jon Briones, Carlin James, Isa Briones and Zedrick Restauro join fellow FilAm Darren Criss in a new episode of FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story this Wednesday, March 14 at 10:00pm.

Jon Jon Briones (Miss Saigon) will play Andrew’s father, ‘Modesto Cunanan’ while Carlin James (How to Get Away with Murder, This Is Us, Dear White People) will play Andrew’s brother, ‘Christopher’ and Isa Briones (who was just announced today to play ‘Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds’ in the first national tour of Hamilton) will play his sister, ‘Elena.’  They will also appear in next week’s episode on March 21.

Filipinos seem to praise their own whenever anyone hits mainstream celebrity status, but they did not with Cunanan.  Many never spoke his name at the office water cooler gossip while others watched the televised manhunt, in secret.  It’s as if we all felt a great disturbance…

When it was announced that the Andrew Cunanan story will be the 2018 series focus for American Crime Story, I was hesitant to even promote it. But, it was until a colleague friend mentioned to me that the show “tells struggles of a Fil-Am family seldom seen on TV.”

She’s right.

Cunanan developed a reputation as a prolific liar given to telling fantastic tales about his family and personal life.  He was also adept at changing his appearance according to what he felt was most attractive at a given moment.  When he was 19, his father deserted his family to avoid arrest for embezzlement. That same year, his mother learned that Cunanan was gay.  During an ensuing argument, he threw her against a wall, dislocating her shoulder.  Later examination of his behavior from reports indicate that he may have suffered from antisocial personality disorder, a personality disorder characterized by an abnormal lack of empathy (earlier known as psychopathy).

This is such an interesting issue.  Representation matters.   Even if the Cunanan family was not healthy, I'm still very happy to see a mixed-Filipino-American family being represented on TV on a major show!   It may not seem like such a big deal to some, but for those communities who see very little representation on TV and film, it is deeply appreciated.

I'm glad you're proud and impressed, Lin.  Ditto that for me too.    It's a new sensation to be creeped out by Darren.  He's such a adorable sweetie pie in real life.  And the previous characters he played never had that effect on us, of course!   (I loved  Blaine and Hedwig!!  His character from Eastwick was adorkable, and his Harry from AVPM and its sequels is much beloved.  Lee in Girl Most Likely was nice, a good guy.  I guess folks had mixed feelings about J. Pierpont Finch, but he was not scary and creepy!    Justin from American Horror Story was a jerk, but no killer, and the Music Meister from The Flash turned out to be a good guy.)  

Darren sure is hitting the perfect notes in Versace.  (But cross fingers the next character he  plays is a different kind of character.  )

Darren Criss: Today’s the day. I’m very proud of all the hard work our cast & crew put into this, and I’m excited to share it with the world. I’d like to remind viewers that these were very real crimes that destroyed very real people.
My heart goes out - as it did every day going in to work- to the victims and their loved ones, who, 20 years later, still must cope with the tragedies that our series depicts.
My hope is that our show can bring some kind of justice to those whose stories have, until now, lived mostly in the shadows. And my prayer is that with all the darkness we explore, we can create some kind of light- by igniting discussion and encouraging much larger questions about ourselves and the society we live in.
