This is so nice that Darren took the crew of Versace to dinner at that Italian restaurant, Via Emilia 9!   I love how much he shows his appreciation for the all the talented behind-the-scenes folks who work on his various projects.  Nicely done, Darren! heart

Darren Criss likes to give back.

The actor has been traveling back and forth to Miami to finish up scenes for the much anticipated “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.”

The “Glee” star plays Andrew Cunanan, the serial killer who gunned down designer Gianni Versace on the steps of his South Beach mansion in the early morning of July 15, 1997.

The trailer was just released for the TV series (airing in January on FX) and it looks creepy AF.

Over the weekend, Criss took some of his crew members to Via Emilia 9 in Miami Beach to celebrate.

The singer/actor ordered just about everything on the menu, the spy continues, and posed for selfies with just about anyone who asked.

Onlookers report he said it was the highlight of his many trips down south and the eatery was one of the best, most authentic Italian hidden gems in town.

One of the most anticipated mini-series of 2018 will be American Crime Story, where former Glee actor Darren Criss will play Andrew Cunanan, who famously killed Gianni Versace in July of 1997.  This version of ACS follow up the original one, which focused on the infamous case of O.J. Simpson.  That subsequently won a bunch of awards, as the latest installment is expected to do the same as well next year.

The 10 episode series, which also stars Ricky Martin, Penelope Cruz and Annette Bening, just wrapped up shooting in Miami, and Darren looks super happy as he took some of his crew members to a local hot spot to celebrate.

Darren and his crew stopped by Via Emilia 9 over the weekend, which is a popular Italian eatery in the heart of Miami Beach.  Other famous people who have stopped on by include Anthony Bordain, who said it was one of the best hidden gems he’s ever discovered.  Looks like I may need to make a trip to Miami pronto!

Are you excited for the new American Crime Story?  Do you think Darren will shine in this role?

American Crime Story: The Assassination Of Gianni Versace – Why you should watch the next big true crime drama

Nov 21, 2017

American Crime Story: The People V OJ Simpson was one of 2016’s most compelling TV shows.

Adapted from Jeffrey Toobin’s The Run Of His Life novel, the 10 part series chronicled the infamous OJ murder case.

It gained worldwide praise for its writing and direction, and was a critical success, winning multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards.

Luckily, fans of American Crime Story won’t have to wait much longer for the show’s second season.

The self-contained miniseries will return in early 2018 and will explore the murder of Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace.

Here’s everything you need to know about FX’s upcoming true crime anthology.

What is it about?

The Assassination of Gianni Versace is based on American author Maureen Orth’s 1999 novel Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, And The Largest Failed Manhunt In US History.

It centres on the events surrounding the famous designer’s murder on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion on July 15, 1997.

The Versace founder was shot dead at the age of 50 by 27-year-old American serial killer Andrew Cunanan, who’d murdered as least four other people.

Cunanan was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list until he took his own life eight days after assassinating Versace.

Who’s starring in it?

At the beginning of this year, Ryan Murphy’s frequent collaborator Darren Criss (of Glee fame) joined the cast alongside Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez.

They will be starring as Andrew Cunanan and Gianni Versace respectively.

Penelope Cruz will play Gianni’s sister and fellow fashion designer Donatella, while Ricky Martin will play Antonio D’Amico, Gianni’s partner of 15 years who was drinking coffee on the veranda of their home when he heard the gunshots.

Other cast members for season two are Max Greenfield as Gianni’s brother Santo, and Finn Wittrock as Cunanan’s first victim Jeffrey Trail.

Annaleigh Ashford and Nico Evers-Swindell round out the main cast as Cunanan’s friends, Lizzie and Phil Cote.

Where was it filmed?

At the 2016 TCA Press Tour, Ryan Murphy talked about filming at the actual Versace mansion.

The fashion designer’s house was sold in the years following his death and it was subsequently turned into a hotel.

As a result, the cast and crew were able to shoot many of the key moments in Versace’s home.

The assassination scene was eerily filmed in the real location where Versace was killed.

How will it be different from The People V OJ Simpson?

If you’re worried about The Assassination Of Gianni Versace being just another rehash of The People V OJ Simpson, you can rest easy.

The shows might be set in the same era and surround very wealthy celebrities, but this version follows a manhunt rather than a court trial.

It also explores a very different celebrity figure; OJ was an African-American sports star, while Versace was an openly gay Italian fashion designer who frequented the international party scene.

The fashion and set design will therefore have a very different style.

Why should I watch it?

The Assassination of Gianni Versace explores a tragic event in history that many people – particular those in their teens and 20s – won’t necessarily remember.

It also acts as a sort of tribute to Versace himself.

He was a trailblazer, a trendsetter and a style icon who lived life by his own rules.

Ryan Murphy’s shows are always culturally, politically and socially relevant, and this season of American Crime Story deals with issues of wealth, homophobia in the 90s, and fame.

If the writing, direction and performances are anything like they were in The People V OJ Simpson, we can expect another gripping, grueling and truly memorable series of American Crime Story.

When’s it on and how can I watch it?

The 10 episode series will premiere in America on January 17, 2018 on FX.

A UK date is yet to be announced but it’s expected in early 2018 and will air on BBC Two, before hitting Netflix soon after.

The People V O.J Simpson, which also aired on BBC Two, premiered on 15 February 2016.

Yes, I agree.  I would love to hear what Mario Lopez thought, since he said Andrew Cunanan lived really close to his family's home.  I know  Mario said that his father knew the family, but I don't remember if Mario said he, himself, met or knew Andrew.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

On the morning of July 15, 1997, fashion designer Gianni Versace took his usual stroll, bought a newspaper, and returned to his Miami Beach mansion. He never made it past the steps, because a young man named Andrew Cunanan shot him twice in the head. The shocking murder, why it happened, and an in-depth examination of the lives of both the victim and the killer will play out over ten episodes in the miniseries The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, the second installment of the FX franchise following the Emmy-winning The People v. O.J. Simpson.

Based on the book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U. S. History by Maureen Orth, it stars Edgar Ramirez (Joy, The Girl on the Train) as Versace, Darren Criss (Glee) as Cunanan, Penelope Cruz as Versace’s sister Donatella, and Ricky Martin as Antonio D’Amico, Versace’s longtime lover. The story begins with the murder, which was the last of at least five Cunanan committed on a cross-country killing spree.

“We tell the story in reverse,” says executive producer and director Ryan Murphy. “We get into how he had that motive, and why he wanted to do what he wanted to do and why it was allowed to happen,” given the social climate of the 1990s.

“Andrew Cunanan was able to make his way across the country and pick off these victims, many of whom were gay, was because of homophobia at the time,” Murphy points out. “’Don’t ask, don’t tell’ was going on. Various police organizations refused to put up ‘wanted’ posters, even though they knew that Andrew Cunanan had probably committed many of these murders and was probably headed that way, all of which we deal with in the show.”

“We examine [all] the victims,” adds executive producer Brad Simpson. “We celebrate the lives of these people that Andrew Cunanan snuffed out.”

The series also addresses the subject of Versace’s HIV-positive status, which he kept secret. “Versace had announced he was gay in an interview. His company was about to go public. He was terrified of anything coming out negative about his personal life.  We delve into that in the show,” says Murphy. “I don’t think there should be any stigma or shame attached to HIV at all, even then. But there really was, and we address that headon.”

In addition to what he calls a “startling” physical resemblance to Versace, Murphy believes that Edgar Ramirez embodied the soulfulness and mystery necessary to play the designer. Like the other actors, he was Murphy’s first choice for the role.

“I’m a huge fan of stories that capture the zeitgeist and the spirit of the time that speak about greater subjects going on in society,” says Ramirez. “This story captures not only a very dramatic, amazing story that needs to be told, but how it captures the spirit of the time. It’s like a Greek tragedy. These characters are fated.  And what is so amazing, and also moving and heartbreaking, is that it happened for real.”

Versace’s relationship with Antonio D’Amico is an important focus of the story, and Ricky Martin, who is gay, reveals that it affected him very personally. “Gianni was surrounded by ‘yes’ people. Antonio was bluntly honest. Antonio would push him to live life to the fullest. He was always right there. Nothing would separate them. And Gianni would not allow anyone to talk bad about Antonio.” Martin spoke to D’Amico and assured him, “I will make sure that people fall in love with your relationship with Gianni. I want them to see the connection you had.”

Playing serial killer Andrew Cunanan was a challenge for Darren Criss on several levels. “How could you possibly find something good about this person?” he’s often asked. “The bleeding idealist in me that wants to find the good in everybody has to really find that and exploit that as much as humanly possible, because we will see the worst of him. I found myself trying to make peace with it a little bit, in [playing] this person that represents something so horrible.”

He calls Cunanan “probably one of the most exhilarating characters that I’ve spent time with because he is so all over the place. He was an enjoyable, delightful, smart, brilliant kid brimming with potential. We see him at his best; we see him at his worst; we see him at his most charming; we see him at his most hurt. We really do get to know him as a person. It isn’t 10 episodes of watching Cunanan lurk around, doing horrible things constantly. I think if that were the case, I probably would have said no to the project,” he says, noting that he was able to gain insights from conversations with people who knew Cunanan. “It’s been a wonderful challenge to really find as much humanity in him as possible because we’ve got a long way to go with this guy, and we can’t have you just hate him the entire time.”

Screenwriter Tom Rob Smith’s script draws parallels between the lives of Versace and Cunanan. “Cunanan was from relative poverty, but Versace was, too. They had lots of similarities. One went on to create a business that was worth 800 million. And one became the opposite, this destructive force.  And how these two lives collided is essentially the story we’re telling,” Smith says. Adds Criss, “In many ways, obviously, they’re very, very different men. But I think we try to find the common denominators between them.”

The miniseries was shot in Los Angeles and on location in Miami, where the production was permitted to film some scenes Versace’s villa Casa Casuarina—now a hotel–where the actors rehearsed before filming began. “Donatella sold the home, took the furniture and the art, but left everything else there, the structure of it,” says Ryan Murphy. “We had a full month there, and we really bonded a lot over the tone of the piece. And that was its own emotional rehearsal.“ Adds Darren Criss, “I walked in the building and could feel Gianni’s presence.”

Not surprisingly, Criss says that filming the murder scene “was an overwhelmingly emotional day” for everyone involved. “We shot exactly on the exact step where Gianni died,” notes Murphy. “The crew was crying.”

The interior of the mansion was reproduced on an L.A. soundstage, replicated down to the smallest detail, including an ashtray made in 1997 and Versace’s favorite orchid plant on a table. The department heads and producers “would have like 10 meetings before we even showed up at the location,” Murphy says. When you’re doing historical pieces, you have an obligation to really get it right.”

Extensive research on Cunanan was done as well, down to the laces in his shoes and the backpack he carried. But Murphy reminds that the show is a docudrama, not a documentary. “There are always certain things you take liberty with.” As Edgar Ramirez puts it, “There are moments where imagination helps to connect the dots that reality is not sufficient to connect. It’s a piece of a painting; it’s not a photograph.”

Comparing Gianni Versace to his previous O.J. Simpson miniseries, which was primarily shot in a courtroom, Murphy points out that the manhunt aspect of the story required many locations, and the glamorous aspects of Versace’s life included fashion shows, which meant elaborate staging and hundreds of extras. “It has a great breadth and a great scope,” he says.

Versace “lived outrageously and daringly. His life was opera, and he lived that. He was a disrupter. You can just imagine what Versace would have done if he was not killed,” Murphy muses. “The true loss for me is the loss of his genius and his potential to keep disrupting and to keep changing society.”

Ironically, Versace had just recovered from a very serious illness just before he was murdered. “I really admired the way that he pulled himself back from the brink of death and kept fighting,” says Murphy, who sees the miniseries as an opportunity to pay tribute to the designer and for young people “to discover him in a new way. We wanted to do honor to him. And I think we did get it right.”

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

Premieres January 17 at 10PM

Darren Criss stars as Andrew Cunanan in the FX anthology series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

Criss is an Emmy®️ nominated artist with an illustrious career spanning television, film, music and stage.

Earlier this year, Criss debuted his indiepop band Computer Games along with his brother Chuck Criss. Their first album, Lost Boys Life EP, which features four songs written by the duo, quickly became a fan favorite and debuted to rave reviews. The lead single “Every Single Night” debuted at #2 on Billboard’s “Hot Singles” chart and landed on various lists including “50 Best Songs of 2017 So Far,” “20 Awesome Pop Songs From 2017’s First Half You Might Have Missed,” “10 Great Pop Songs From March You Might’ve Missed” and deemed one of the best moments at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards. Teen Vogue labeled the album as “an indie gem filled with plenty of 80s pop inspiration and a dash of true DIY sensibility,” while Entertainment Weekly described their sound as “a funky blast to the past in the spirit of some of the grooviest ’80s superstars.”

Last fall, Criss returned to Broadway in his critically-acclaimed performance as “Hedwig” in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which kicked off the 2014 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival’s national tour. The New York Times touted Criss as “mesmerizing” when he first stepped into the title role on Broadway in 2015. Criss made his Broadway debut in January of 2012 as “J. Pierrepont Finch” in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. With Criss at the helm, the revival made just under $4 million, which proved to be the most lucrative three weeks of its 11-month run. Criss is also the co-founder of New York City’s first showtunes music festival, Elsie Fest.

Criss is best known for playing “Blaine Anderson” on FOX’s global phenomenon Glee. He received an Emmy nomination in 2015 for Best Original Music and Lyrics for the song “This Time,” which appeared in the episode titled “Dreams Come True.” As a member of the cast, he was also nominated for two Screen Actors Guild®️ Awards. Criss’ previous credits include Girl Most Likely, American Horror Story, Web Therapy and Eastwick.

Look at this, Darren, along with Matt Bomer (who will direct an episode of Versace), and Ryan Murphy and others related to Versace, went to see Jon Jon Briones (who plays Andrew Cunanan's father in Versace), who currently is starring in Miss Saigon on Broadway.   I wonder if they also are doing some press together for Versace?

Thanks so much, Jeremy, for posting that YouTube video!!

I think it's the white in Matt Bomer's beard.  White in one's hair and facial hair of men tends to age a person.  But when he's clean-shaven, he looks the same as he did before.

Having seen many of the promos and the preview video, it's clear that Cunanan plays a central role, as well as Versace.   And to think, the show will be airing in the U.S. in about a month from now!  celebrate

Here is the same video--I wanted to include it because of the caption.

More pics of Darren, Ryan, Matt Bomer, and Nina Jacobson (I believe she also is an executive producer of Versace) and some of the Versace family visiting Jon Jon Briones in Miss Saigon on Broadway.   It looks like Darren organized folks to get together to view Mr. Briones in the musical.   Everyone looks very happy.    :happy face

‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’: 6 Things We Learned From FX’s First Screening

Darren Criss has taken on a “Shakespearean” role in bringing the tortured life story of serial killer Andrew Cunanan to life in FX’s “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.”

So said “Versace” director and executive producer Ryan Murphy on Monday night as he “played Barbara Walters” during a Q&A with stars and producers that followed the series’ first public screening, held at New York City’s Metrograph theater.

“Versace” stars Criss, Edgar Ramirez, Ricky Martin, writer Tom Rob Smith, author Maureen Orth, and executive producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson offered insights into the limited series that has the hard task of following “The People V. O.J. Simpson” as the second installment of FX’s “American Crime Story” franchise.

Here are 6 things we learned from the first look at “Versace”:

  • Like “People V. O.J. Simpson,” “Versace” takes on larger cultural and societal issues beyond the sensational details of how Cunanan gunned down fashion superstar Versace on the steps of his Miami Beach villa on July 15, 1997. Through the once-and-future prism of a period drama, the first episode raises timely questions about discrimination against LGBT crime victims by law enforcement, disparity in health care for rich and poor, and the sick market for cashing in on grisly celebrity deaths. Versace was one of the first major public figures to live his life openly as a gay man, and the then-and-now perspective on cultural attitudes toward the LGBT community is clearly a major theme, based on the first episode. “We want every season of this show to be about that crime that America is guilty of,” Jacobson said. “We wanted to re-conjure what it meant to be gay in the 1990s.”
  • Don’t expect a simple linear storyline in “Assassination’s” nine episodes. “We’re telling the story backwards. The first and second episodes are about the assassination (of Versace) and the manhunt, and then we go back in time. In episode eight you meet Andrew Cunanan as a child. The final episode deals with his eventual demise,” Murphy said.
  • Orth, author of the 1999 book “Vulgar Favors: The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” said Cunanan was product of the modern age with his obsession with achieving a measure of celebrity. He was “besotted” with the idea of fame. “He was willing to kill for fame. He wanted to be everything Versace was, but he wasn’t willing to work for it,” Orth said. She added a harsh observation about the nation’s current political climate: “The idea that he was willing to kill for fame — there’s a line from there to getting famous from a sex tape like the Kardashians down to becoming president of the United States because you’re a reality TV star,” Orth opined.
  • Criss became emotionally invested in playing the emotionally disturbed serial killer. The role is without question a career-accelerator for the former “Glee” star. Murphy noted that Criss is in every episode as the story drills down on the factors that made Cunanan go so wrong. Versace was the fifth victim on a killing spree in 1997. “Stories that bend people’s sense of empathy are what interest me,” Criss said. “We’re trying to humanize somebody who is so conventionally vilified,” he said. Murphy added: “We’re not interested in the killer-of-the-week approach,” he said. “We’re trying to understand the psychology of someone who would be driven to do those deeds.”
  • Ramirez also got under the skin of Versace, even though his character spends most of episode 1 on a gurney in the morgue. Recreating the scenes of Versace’s murder on the actual site of his villa in Miami was a challenging process, said Martin, who plays Versace’s longtime lover, Antonio. “It was a profound, moving experience,” Martin said. “The crew was crying, the actors were crying — it was very intense.” Ramirez felt he channeled the soul of his character during his big death scene. He believed Versace lived through the trauma of being taken to the emergency room before he was declared dead at 9:21 a.m. “He was there,” Ramirez said. “He wanted to express something, but he couldn’t, about the insanity and the tragedy that (his murder) could have been prevented and it wasn’t.”
  • Criss also emphasized the importance of the production having access to the Versace villa. “That house — it bleeds his soul,” Criss said. “His creativity exits in every wall and every doorknob in the house. It’s a living vestige of his legacy. I did feel his presence. I had to say a prayer for thanks and an apology for us exposing it. I’m hoping some light can be made from this very, very dark thing.”
