July 9, 2018

Thursday morning brings the official 2018 Emmy nominations announced by Samira Wiley and Ryan Eggold. Before the big reveal, the staff at Awards Daily TV gave their final predictions in the major categories. Today, we’re focusing on TV Movie / Limited Series Emmy predictions.

Unlike last year’s Big Little Lies, Feud: Bette and Joan, and Fargo-dominated race, this year’s Limited Series / TV movie races are wide open. That’s something Jalal already talked about in his last Awards Tracker piece. And you’ll see that reflected in our overall predictions. There’s nothing we all agree on. Even worse, our Supporting Actor in a Limited Series / TV Movie predictions encompass 14 actors, showing how incredibly wide-open that race is.

Still, there are some certainties. In a relatively weak year, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story will dominate these categories. We all agreed that the series itself, Darren Criss, Penelope Cruz, Judith Light, and Edgar Ramirez would receive nominations. That should allow Versace to lead the Limited Series categories.

[. . .]

Take a look at Team ADTV’s final Limited Series / TV Movie Emmy predictions below. Who do you think will receive nominations? Who will be left out? Be sure to leave your comments on the post!

Interesting comments, but I find the writers' reasoning for a possible nomination for Ricky Martin to be flawed:  "His part was small, but c’mon: it’s Ricky Martin." :very confused   If they liked Ricky's performance, fine, just say that.  But just because Ricky Martin is, well, himself, Ricky Martin, internationally respected pop star, is not a persuasive argument for a nomination.

2018 Emmy Nominations: Predictions for Every Major Category

July 9, 2018

LIMITED SERIES

The Assassination of Gianni Versace
Godless
Howards End
The Looming Tower
Twin Peaks

A once-moribund Emmy category, the miniseries has been renewed under its new title—and by changing appetites in television consumption. This year, FX’s thorough, devastating portrait of late fashion designer Gianni Versace and his killer is likely to get a nod for its sprawl, ambition, and dazzling ensemble of actors. Hulu’s The Looming Tower, about nothing more sacrosanct than 9/11—well, the bungled events leading up to it, anyway—will probably get on the shortlist for the same reasons. We’d like to assume that David Lynch’s lauded, befuddling return to television is a lock, but who knows how many Emmy voters will groove on Twink Peaks’ grim, erratic wavelength. People love a good Western, which is why we’ve put Netflix’s solid Godless on here. And few awards voters can resist the pull of a well-reviewed literary adaptation period piece; hence, Starz’s Howards End. Potential spoilers could be Top of the Lake: China Girl and, we hope against hope, the brilliant American Vandal.

LEAD ACTOR, LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE

Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace
Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose
Jeff Daniels, The Looming Tower
Michael B. Jordan, Fahrenheit 451
Kyle MacLachlan, Twin Peaks
Al Pacino, Paterno

Darren Criss was the centerpiece of his series, as was Kyle MacLachlan, so they are likely to be recognized here. Benedict Cumberbatch is no stranger to Emmy nominations, and he’s been heaped with praise for his addled turn on Melrose—but are enough voters aware of it? Jeff Daniels and Al Pacino are big names in big projects, so we’re putting them down here, while Michael B. Jordan, riding high on Black Panther esteem, could edge his way in despite Fahrenheit’s tepid reviews. Antonio Banderas as an intense artist in Genius: Picasso could upset in that sixth slot, though.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE

Penélope Cruz, The Assassination of Gianni Versace
Laura Dern, Twin Peaks
Judith Light, The Assassination of Gianni Versace
Sharon Stone, Mosaic
Merritt Wever, Godless

Emmy voters likely won’t forego a chance to nominate Penélope Cruz, so we’re assuming she’ll be here. And her co-star Judith Light is beloved—let’s put her in, too. We’re predicting big things for Godless overall, which means Merritt Wever will likely get recognized for her idiosyncratic work as a gay frontierswoman. Laura Dern might even have a double-nomination year if enough voters appreciated her on Twin Peaks. Though many prognosticators are putting Angela Lansbury in that last spot, for a Little Women adaptation that didn’t get much traction, we’re gonna try to put some proactive energy out into the universe and predict Sharon Stone for her terrific work in Steven Soderbergh’s criminally under-appreciated mystery series. Following your heart instead of your head is a foolish game to play during awards season, but sometimes, you just have to do it.

SUPPORTING ACTOR, LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE

Jeff Daniels, Godless
Bill Camp, The Looming Tower
Edgar Ramírez, The Assassination of Gianni Versace
Michael Shannon, Fahrenheit 451
Michael Stuhlbarg, The Looming Tower

All of these guys, minus maybe Jeff Daniels, have other contenders closely nipping at their heels. Brandon Victor Dixon could find his way into the mix for his Judas in the live Jesus Christ Superstar, as could any of the other approx. 8 billion men in The Looming Tower. But we think the biggest surprise nomination could be Ricky Martin for The Assassination of Gianni Versace. His part was small, but c’mon: it’s Ricky Martin.

Emmy Predictions in Movies and Miniseries: Gianni Versace, 9/11 and ‘Twin Peaks’ Strangeness

July 9, 2018

Among the other contenders [for Limited Series category], FX’s Ryan Murphy is always a major presence in these categories, with his big entry this year not the post-election edition of “American Horror Story” but the second installment of the true-crime dramatization series that began with his Emmy juggernaut “The People v. O.J. Simpson”: “”The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.” It should be the most-nominated show in the field, though the limited series “The Looming Tower,” “Godless,” “Patrick Melrose,” “Genius: Picasso,” “Howards End” and “The Sinner” will all find support.

[. .  . ]

Outstanding Limited Series

“Gianni Versace” is a sure thing, while Hulu’s pre-9/11 drama “The Looming Tower” and the Western “Godless” came on strong as voting approached. With only five nominees in the category, that means the battle for the last two slots will include “Twin Peaks,” “Howards End,” “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” “American Vandal,” “Patrick Melrose,” “Alias Grace,” “Genius: Picasso,” “The Alienist,” “The Sinner” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Mosaic.”

[. .  . ]

Predicted nominees (in order of likelihood): “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” “The Looming Tower,” “Godless,” “Howards End,” “Twin Peaks”

Watch out for:
“Genius: Picasso,” “Patrick Melrose,” “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” “The Sinner,” “The Alienist”

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie

The year’s powerhouse male performances could easily fill this category a couple of times over. After all, you can’t leave out Darren Criss as the killer in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” or Al Pacino as Joe Paterno, or Benedict Cumberbatch in “Patrick Melrose,” or Kyle MacLachlan as multiple versions of Agent Cooper in “Twin Peaks,” or Antonio Banderas as Picasso, or Jeff Daniels in “The Looming Tower,” or Michael B. Jordan as the tortured fireman in “Fahrenheit 451,” or Jesse Plemons as a Captain Kirk run amok in “USS Callister.”

[. . . ]

Criss, Cumberbatch and Pacino seem to be the locks, and we suspect that Banderas’ performance in “Genius: Picasso” will join them, as will Daniels in “The Looming Tower” and, in a close vote over Legend, MacLachlan in “Twin Peaks.”

Predicted nominees: Darren Criss, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”; Benedict Cumberbatch, “Patrick Melrose”; Al Pacino, “Paterno”; Jeff Daniels, “The Looming Tower”; Antonio Banderas, “Genius: Picasso”; Kyle MacLachlan, “Twin Peaks”

Watch out for:
John Legend, “Jesus Christ Superstar”; Michael B. Jordan, “Fahrenheit 451”; Jesse Plemons, “USS Callister”; Jared Harris, “The Terror”; Jack O’Connell, “Godless”

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie

There will probably be six nominees in the category, but how many shows will they represent? . . .

Ramirez is a lock as Versace, and we’re guessing that Sarsgaard (as a CIA chief who doesn’t want to share pre-9/11 intelligence with the FBI) and Rahim (as a Muslim-American FBI agent) will make the cut from “The Looming Tower.”

[ . .  .]

Predicted nominees: Edgar Ramirez, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”; Jeff Daniels, “Godless”; Michael Shannon, “Fahrenheit 451”; Peter Sarsgaard, “The Looming Tower”; Brandon Victor Dixon, “Jesus Christ Superstar”; Tahar Rahim, “The Looming Tower”

Watch out for:
Michael Stuhlbarg, “The Looming Tower”; Ricky Martin, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace”; Bill Camp, “The Looming Tower”; Jason Ritter, “The Tale”; Alex Rich, “Genius: Picasso”

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie

“The Assassination of Gianni Versace” should place two actresses in this category, Penélope Cruz for her role as Donatella Versace and Judith Light as the wife of another murder victim (if voters don’t think her role is too small). Merritt Wever is all but assured a nomination for “Godless,” while Nicole Kidman brings star power to “Top of the Lake: China Girl” and Jennifer Jason Leigh is in the running for “Patrick Melrose.” Laura Dern figures to be a strong contender for “Twin Peaks,” though her chances (and those of co-star Naomi Watts) could suffer if voters are baffled by the show.

Angela Lansbury is the most-nominated actress who has never won an Emmy, and voters will likely give her another chance this year with “Little Women.” Wild cards include Sharon Stone as a celebrated writer in Steven Soderbergh’s miniseries and app “Mosaic” and Billie Lourd and Alison Pill in “American Horror Story: Cult.”

Predicted nominees: Penelope Cruz, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”; Merritt Wever, “Godless”; Nicole Kidman, “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” Angela Lansbury, “Little Women”; Judith Light, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”; Jennifer Jason Leigh, “Patrick Melrose”

Watch out for:
Laura Dern, “Twin Peaks”; Ellen Burstyn, “The Tale”; Sharon Stone, “Mosaic”; Anna Paquin, “Alias Grace”; Naomi Watts, “Twin Peaks”

Final Emmy Nomination Predictions: Which Shows Will Be Up for Awards?

July 10, 2018

Limited Series

“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” (FX)

“Godless” (Netflix)
“Howards End” (Starz)
“The Looming Tower” (Hulu)
“Twin Peaks” (Showtime)

This feels like the likely quintet but programs such as “Genius: Picasso” (NatGeo), “Patrick Melrose” (Showtime) and “Top of the Lake: China Girl” (Sundance) are in the mix as well. The story here will be Hulu expanding its Emmy game with “The Looming Tower,” a new potential for awards success after scoring with “The Handmaid’s Tale” last year. And if “Twin Peaks” misses the cut (it could), expect rioting from David Lynch’s obsessed fanbase.

Lead Actor – Limited Series/TV Movie

Antonio Banderas, “Genius: Picasso”
Darren Criss, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”
Benedict Cumberbatch, “Patrick Melrose”
Jeff Daniels, “The Looming Tower”
John Legend, “Jesus Christ Superstar”
Al Pacino, “Paterno”

Virtuoso performances from Criss and Cumberbatch lead the way here. Banderas and Pacino are safe bets, along with Daniels (a likely double nominee this year with his supporting “Godless” performance in play as well). Meanwhile, Legend or Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”) could really liven things up. We’ll lean to the former.

Supporting Actor – Limited Series/TV Movie

Bill Camp, “The Looming Tower”
Jeff Daniels, “Godless”
Brandon Victor Dixon, “Jesus Christ Superstar”
Edgar Ramirez, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”
Peter Sarsgaard, “The Looming Tower”
Michael Stuhlbarg, “The Looming Tower”

Emmys 2018: Predictions and Proclamations, Nominations Edition

By Matt Brennan

July 11, 2018

Limited Series

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
(FX)
Godless (Netflix)
Howards End (Starz)
The Looming Tower (Hulu)
Twin Peaks: The Return (Showtime)

[. . .]

Lead Actor (Limited Series/TV Movie)

Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose (Showtime)
Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace (FX)
Jeff Daniels, The Looming Tower (Hulu)
Michael B. Jordan, Fahrenheit 451 (HBO)
Kyle MacLachlan, Twin Peaks: The Return (Showtime)
Al Pacino, Paterno (HBO)

Whew! This category has some big names! Which is how I arrived at a list that doesn’t include Antonio Banderas as Pablo Picasso in Genius (for which Geoffrey Rush nabbed a nomination last year). The only non-supernova on here is Criss, and his frightening, magnetic performance as spree killer Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace might be the cream of the crop. (MacLachlan’s multi-character turn in Twin Peaks is sure to give him a run for his money.) I suppose it’s theoretically possible for Daniels’ supporting campaign for Godless to knock him out and allow Banderas to slip in, but I’m not gonna bet the house on it.

Supporting Actor (Limited Series/TV Movie)

Jeff Daniels, Godless (Netflix)
Ricky Martin, The Assassination of Gianni Versace (FX)
Edgar Ramirez, The Assassination of Gianni Versace (FX)
Michael Shannon, Fahrenheit 451 (HBO)
Michael Stuhlbarg, The Looming Tower (Hulu)
Peter Sarsgaard, The Looming Tower (Hulu)

Along with Lead Actor (Drama), this is the list that reflects the biggest shift from my own preferences: Only Ramirez, as a very convincing Gianni Versace, appears on both. I suppose I can’t complain if Michael Shannon or Michael Stuhlbarg(the stalwart character actors of the decade, for my money) win an Emmy, but this category is the ultimate consequence of Emmy voters’ traditional inability to reach deep. Tahar Rahim (The Looming Tower), Alex Lawther (Howards End), Cody Fern and Finn Wittrock (The Assassination of Gianni Versace) are the lesser-known names that immediately come to mind as more deserving than most of the mailed-in performances listed above, but I’m just one lowly, increasingly-despondent-as-this-story-goes-on TV critic.

Outstanding Supporting Actress (Limited Series/TV Movie)

Penelope Cruz
, The Assassination Of Gianni Versace (FX)
Laura Dern, Twin Peaks: The Return (Showtime)
Nicole Kidman, Top of the Lake: China Girl (Sundance TV)
Angela Lansbury, Little Women (PBS)
Judith Light, The Assassination Of Gianni Versace (FX)
Merritt Wever, Godless (Netflix)

If my predictions hold, I’ll be thoroughly sad not to see Anna Paquin’s terrifying performance in Alias Grace, or Tracey Ullmann’s devilishly funny one in Howards End, go unacknowledged. But the list above is basically the gay TV critic’s dream field, so: I know when to hold my tongue.

No Guts No Glory – 2018 Emmy Nominations Predictions

July 10, 2018

After an endless season of Emmy campaigns the 2018 nominations are almost here and everyone is excited to see what surprises they’ll bring. In fact some of the most exciting predictions are ones that fall far out of consensus – hence No Guts No Glory. In anticipation of this year’s nominees the ADTV team compiled some of our most wild predictions and the one thing all five of us agree on is that Killing Eve will break through one way or another.

Well, congratulations to Darren and Ryan Murphy, Tom Rob Smith, and the cast and crew of ACS Versace

Well done!  I can't say I'm surprised Darren was nominated--with the vast majority of critics loving his work on the show, but yeah, feeling so very happy for and proud of him.  So well-deserved!  I can only imagine how he must be dancing on Cloud 9 right now with Mia and friends (and family?)!

I meant to post earlier, but it's been a busy day.  But I've been following all the wonderful updates from dcriss-archive and Darren Criss Army the whole day.  First thing I did this morning was check just to make sure our man got that nomination!

I'm also feeling very happy for Ryan Murphy, the rest of the cast and crew, Tom Rob Smith,  and the other producers/showrunners ACS Versace.  So  happy for Ryan.  The show was a brilliant idea.  It took so much vision from Ryan to get this show done and to shine a spotlight on, to bring to light, the human cost of societal intolerance, of society's ability to shun and turn their cheek away from an entire community.  Hats off to Ryan for his vision!

I'm sorry that Cody and Jon Jon were not nominated.  But it doesn't take away how brilliant those two actors, one a veteran actor and one a young up and coming rising star, were in the show.  Awards shows tend to play it safe and reward big names (and often reward the same shows and same folks every year).  (For this reason, I'm so relieved that Darren was nominated, since his category was teeming with giant names!)  To me, Cody's performance (and the brilliant writing for Cody's lines) were the heart of the show--he just captured the heart break of the stories of these men, and likewise, Jon Jon's performance was so remarkable in how it highlighted an Asian immigrant's experiences in America in a highly visible project by a highly visible, well-respected showrunner.  My hope is that both Jon Jon and Cody will have more opportunities in the future (and in Jon Jon's case, that he will have many opportunities to represent the Asian-American acting community in the future).

Just so happy for everyone who was part of this team!   Much love to all involved!!!  heart heart heart  My heart is teeming with pride.

Sandra Oh’s ‘Killing Eve’ Emmy Nod Isn’t the Only Important Asian Nomination to Celebrate

July 12, 2018

Oh isn’t the only significant Asian representation among the nominees though. Darren Criss, who is half Filipino, snagged a nomination for playing killer Andrew Cunanan, who in real life was also half-Filipino, in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” on FX. This is his first individual acting Emmy nomination. He previously had a nod as a singer/songwriter on “Glee.”

Criss released the following statement on Twitter regarding his nomination: “Zorro, Dr. Strange, Harry Dunne, Todd Alquist, and Jesus Christ… pretty incredible company to keep. Humbled by your talent, Antonio Banderas, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeff Daniels, Jesse Plemons, John Legend. I’m such a fan. Congrats! What an honor, Television Academy. Thank you so much. Truly. Wow. And a huge congrats to my fellow cast and crew of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story! Ryan Murphy does it again!”

Either win would make great strides for Asian representation, especially in the acting categories. Only two Asian actors have won previously: Riz Ahmed in 2017 for his leading role in “The Night Of” and Archie Panjabi for her supporting role in “The Good Wife” in 2010.

In addition to Darren, Ryan, Tom Rob Smith, the rest of the cast and crew and showrunners/producers of ACS Versace, I'm happy for one of my favorite shows (This is Us) and for Sterling K. Brown and Ron Cephas Jones (I'm sorry Mandy Moore wasn't nominated)!  This article didn't seem to realize Darren is part Filipino.

Fil-Am actor Darren Criss earns Emmy nomination for serial killer role

July 13, 2018

His role in the TV drama “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” as a serial killer has been a big hit with audience and critics.

Now, Filipino-American actor Darren Criss has received an acting nomination for an Emmy, perhaps the highest honor in TV, it was revealed late Thursday (Philippine time).

This is the first Emmy acting nod for Criss, whose mother is from Cebu. He was nominated in 2015 in the outstanding original music category for a song he wrote for “Glee.”

In his new show, Criss plays Andrew Cunanan, the half-Filipino murderer notorious for killing five men, including famous fashion Gianni Versace, in 1997.

It has drawn positive reviews from critics, with the New York Times’ Margaret Lyons describing his performance as “impressive and haunting” in spite of her tamed views on the show overall.

TV Guide called him “magnificent,” while USA Today praised him for bringing the spree killer to life with “disturbing energy and commitment,” just to name some of the reviews.

Darren was right on the nose when he described why he felt Ryan is so great at what he does.  Ryan colors the stories of his characters with social significance, giving his characters a voice to tell stories that haven't been told by their communities in the same way before.  At the same time, Ryan is genius at making each of his characters accessible, so that any barriers that may have existed between some audience members and the characters begin to melt away once the audience begins to relate to and bond with the characters, despite differences that some audience members may have felt before.  I know that happened with Glee, especially with how audience members who previously had no sense of community with LGBTQ people, began to really love and embrace LGBTQ characters over the course of the various seasons of Glee.   That is magic.  That is, I believe, the key to combatting prejudice and bias:  To be able to help people develop a sense of community with other human beings, regardless of their differences.

"How am I doing? I don’t even know how I’m doing. I’m on fire, man. What can I say?” Ricky Martin told Deadline today, after receiving his first ever Emmy nomination for Ryan Murphy’s FX series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Picking up their own nominations amongst the series’ 18 overall nods, Versace stars Edgar Ramírez, Darren Criss and Finn Wittrock seemed to share Martin’s sense of excited bewilderment.

Documenting the murder of the titular fashion icon (Ramírez) at the hands of spree killer Andrew Cunanan (Criss), the latest installment of Murphy’s true crime anthology series was a dream project for those involved. “It’s a difficult thing to say because obviously [Cunanan] is a very tragic figure. I’d like to think that if I was in any position to have stopped the horrible things that happened, if I was there, I would have tried to do something,” Criss explained of his thinking in portraying an infamous real-life killer. “But unfortunately I wasn’t there. So all I could do is try to bring a kind of positivity to this darkness by telling a story in a certain way, raising certain questions that we can ask 20 years later about not only him, but ourselves and our society.”

“Regardless of awards season, this is an opportunity that I have worked and waited for my entire life. Actors are really only as good as the parts they can get, and the people that believe in them, and the complexity of the characters that they’re playing,” Criss added with reference to his troubled character, who finds himself at the center of the series—more so than Versace himself. “The thing that makes Andrew interesting is not the stuff that is dark or scary or uncomfortable; it’s the breadth of colors that exists on his palette. That’s what actors really crave.”

Like Criss, Martin was happy to see some light come out of the darkness of Versace and Cunanan’s experience. “Today, I realized that my peers in The Academy voted for justice — because at the end of the day, this is what the story was about,” he said. “It’s focused on the justice that is needed [following] this horrible crime. This is the way I see it, period.”

For the actors of Versace, portraying real-life figures was a challange. “As happens every time you play a real-life person, [the challenge] is not to yield before the pressure of playing someone that a lot of people knew—especially someone like Gianni whose work was so impactful,” Ramírez said. “Playing a real-life character, it’s not about imitating. It’s not a photograph—it’s a painting.”

While Criss contemplated the psyche of a killer—attempting to manifest all of Cunanan’s complexity—Martin gave himself up to the darkness D’Amico experienced following the death of Versace. “We walked on set every day extremely vulnerable, but at the same time, we all felt protected because we were being directed by Ryan, and by an amazing group of directors,” he said. “It just felt right.”

Celebrating the success of Versace, each of the series’ stars tipped their hat to its mastermind, Ryan Murphy, discussing what makes him so unique and vital as a storyteller. “He works harder than anyone else in the business and continues to keep a group of people around him who are continually impressive. With every new project, you’re going to be challenged in a new way and surprised,” Wittrock said.

Added Criss, who also worked with Murphy on Glee, “He really gravitates towards sides of the story that we wouldn’t typically hear, or haven’t heard in the past. He finds what’s not only most accessible about those stories, but as a showrunner and a showman, he knows how to make those things attractive.”

Sandra Oh’s and Darren Criss’ Historic Emmy Noms Show the Two Ways to Diversify Casting

On Thursday, Sandra Oh became the first actress of Asian descent to garner an Emmy nomination for best lead actress in a drama while Darren Criss became the second actor of Asian descent to earn an Emmy nod for best lead actor in a limited series or TV movie. Best known for her decade on Grey’s Anatomy, Oh was honored for her critically acclaimed performance as disgraced MI5 detective Eve Polastri in BBC America’s Killing Eve. A supporting player on Glee, Criss delivered a star turn as spree killer Andrew Cunanan in FX’s American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace.

Should these actors take home the award on Sept. 17Criss is widely considered one of the front-runners in his category, whereas Oh will have to build on her momentum to prevail against five returning nominees, including 2017 winner Elisabeth Moss—they would become only the third and fourth acting Emmy winners of Asian descent, after Riz Ahmed for The Night Of in 2017 and Archie Panjabi for The Good Wife in 2010.

The serendipitous pairing of Oh’s and Criss’ roles also suggests that initiatives toward inclusiveness in Hollywood should be two-pronged: through colorblind casting when it comes to characters whose stories aren’t about their race (as was the case with Oh’s Polastri), as well as through stories specific to the Asian American experience (such as that of the half-Filipino Cunanan, who suffered racial discrimination within the gay community).

These record-breaking achievements are all the more poignant for arriving one day after news broke that a movie studio intends to make a fictionalized version of the Thai cave rescue as “a major Hollywood film with A-list stars”—a phrase that has previously served as a justification for whitewashing stories. Criss and Oh’s performances illustrate that acting talent among performers of Asian descent is out there—but won’t be given a chance to reveal itself without the opportunities necessary to create new A-listers.

Darren Criss earns lead actor Emmy nod for ‘Assassination of Gianni Versace’

Fil-Am actor Darren Criss’ heartbreaking, gut-wrenching performance as Filipino serial killer Andrew Cunanan has earned him a well-deserved Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

FX’s true crime dramatization, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace”, led the limited series category with 18 nominations. It will be competing against “The Alienist”, “Genius: Picasso”, “Godless”, and “Patrick Melrose” for Outstanding Limited Series.

This is Criss’ first Emmy nomination for acting. He will be up against Antonio Banderas (“Genius: Picasso”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“Patrick Melrose”), Jeff Daniels (“The Looming Tower”), John Legend (“Jesus Christ Superstar”), and Jesse Plemons (Black Mirror: USS Callister).

Criss fleshed out in the small screen the troubled mind of Cunanan, who went on a horrific murder spree that ended with the death of legendary fashion designer Gianni Versace.

Cunanan killed at least five people before taking his own life to evade arrest.

Fil-Am actor Darren Criss earns an Emmy nomination for his role in the TV drama “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.”

If Criss nabs the award, this would be the first time a Fil-Am would win in the lead actor, limited series or movie category.

The Emmy awards ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on September 17.

Darren Criss, Assassination of Gianni Versace, Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie

Criss earned his first-ever acting nomination for his work as the chilling serial killer Andrew Cunanan on the FX crime drama. However, he has actually been nominated for an Emmy before — for helping to pen an original song on the final season of Glee in 2015. Criss is only the second actor of Asian descent to earn a nomination in this category. The first was Riz Ahmed who made history when he won for The Night Of last year.

edgarramirez25: Besides the hideous crimes and the unjustifiable homophobia underlaying at their very core, The Assassination of Gianni Versace was also a story about families. Families that couldn’t overcome their frustrations and shortcomings and ended up hurting and damaging each other…and also Families that stuck together and protected each other when life was throwing punches at them from all angles. The one thing I can attest for sure after having had the  the privilege of portraying Gianni Versace, is that “family was everything” for him. So today, on this joyous day, I celebrate sharing the honor of this nomination with all of these indescribably talented artists who, more than the dearest of friends, are now my own family. Thank you all and congratulations for such an amazing work. 18 #Emmy Nominations, wow! Thank you so much @televisionacad for this honorable recognition! I am so proud of my family! I have to say, I was surprised that Kyle MacLachlan and Twin Peaks:  The Return were not nominated.

Emmys: Who Will Win, Who Should Win, and Who Got Snubbed

July 12, 2018

OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES

The Alienist
The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Genius: Picasso
Godless
Patrick Melrose

What should win:
The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (or, really, Twin Peaks: The Return)
What will win: The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story is easily the most high-profile show among these nominees, and almost certainly the winner as well. It’s a well-deserving choice, even if it’s frustrating that this category is lacking in stiff competition. The biggest snub here is definitely Twin Peaks: The Return, which might have proved just a little too out-there for Emmy voters. Still, it’s bizarre to see that high-profile series ignored over less-discussed shows like Godless, The Alienist, Patrick Melrose, and Genius: Picasso. But we’ll try not to hold that against Versace when it takes home the award.

If we voted: An even bigger mystery than “who drew the dicks?” is “why did American Vandal get so little love from Emmy voters?” We would’ve loved to see that wonderfully original series nominated along with The Terror, Alias Grace, and of course, Twin Peaks: The Return.  —Caroline Siede

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR – LIMITED SERIES/TV MOVIE

Antonio Banderas, Genius: Picasso
Darren Criss, The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose
Jeff Daniels, The Looming Tower
John Legend, Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert
Jesse Plemons, “USS Callister” (Black Mirror)

What should win:
Darren Criss, The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
What will win: Darren Criss, The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

It can be hard to be the runaway favorite in a category. Darren Criss’ inevitable win feels a little unexciting at this point, even though he’s more than deserving of the award. He delivered a truly captivating performance as serial killer Andrew Cunanan, flipping from charming to terrifying at the drop of a hat (or the drop of a bag of concrete). But the biggest story here is a snub: Where’s Kyle MacLachlan?!? MacLachlan’s multi-faceted performance on Twin Peaks: The Return definitely deserved some love from Emmy voters. On the other hand, we’re thrilled to see John Legend recognized for his soulful turn as Jesus Christ in Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert. Long live the live musical, and long live Agent Dale Cooper!

If we voted:
In addition to MacLachlan, we would’ve loved to see a little more love for the Paramount Network’s Waco. Both Taylor Kitsch and Michael Shannon gave great performances in the little-seen miniseries about the Waco siege against David Koresh and his Branch Davidians. —Caroline Siede

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS – LIMITED SERIES/TV MOVIE

Sara Bareilles, Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert
Penelope Cruz, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Judith Light, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Adina Porter, American Horror Story: Cult
Merritt Weaver, Godless
Letitia Wright, Black Museum (Black Mirror)

Who should win:
Judith Light, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Who will win: Penélope Cruz, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

This category is an embarrassment of riches, and depending on how potential sweeps start shaping up, it could go many ways. Given the Emmys’ past love for American Crime Story, and Penélope Cruz’s strong performance as Donatella Versace, she’s likely to walk away with the award. A more interesting choice would be Judith Light, for the less flashy but equally compelling role of Marilyn Miglin. Light is gripping as Miglin, and the intensity of her performance helps pivot the series from its glitzier early episodes to its increasingly darker, more devastating later run.

If we voted:
It boggles the mind that industry darling and Emmy fave Laura Dern wasn’t nominated for her work as Diane on Twin Peaks: The Return. Julia Ormond and Rebecca Liddiard were also great this year in Howards End and Alias Grace, respectively, but come on, guys. Laura Dern! —Kate Kulzick

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR – LIMITED SERIES/TV MOVIE

Jeff Daniels, Godless
Brandon Victor Dixon, Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert
John Leguizamo, Waco
Ricky Martin, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Edgar Ramirez, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Michael Stuhlbarg, The Looming Tower
Finn Wittrock, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

Who should win:
Brandon Victor Dixon, Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert
Who will win: Edgar Ramirez, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

I mean, did you even see JCS Live? Brandon Victor Dixon’s Judas blew John Legend out of the water with every sequined tank top, black leather vest, and wailing high note he could muster. He’s already a Tony-caliber performer, so it’s thrilling to see his considerable talents translated to the small screen in equally exuberant ways. Still, we think Edgar Ramirez’s small but mighty turn as Gianni Versace in American Crime Story (and his higher profile as an actor) might win out in the end.

If we voted
: Since we’re committed to our heartfelt stan for Twin Peaks: The Return, we’d like to remind you that the late, great Harry Dean Stanton was in it, and he sang a lovely blues song, and that should make you very happy. —Clint Worthington

Yay! Congrats Darren! How exciting!! Well deserved nomination too. Glad to see the guy playing Versace got a nod too, thought he was fantastic. Really hope they both walk away with an award.

Good news ! Now, I hope he gets it but there are a few big names in the category, although I don't know what they did recently.

I liked the last season of Twin Peaks but I can understand why it didn't get a nomination. And I understand even more the fact Kyle hasn't been nominated. He's skilled but he wasn't able to show it beacause his character is a zombie during the most of the season.

Yes!  So happy for Darren and his nomination is so well-deserved!  I agree, that Edgar Ramirez did a fantastic job as Versace, and I thought Finn Wittrock was also very impressive.  Heck--if it was up to me, the whole cast would be nominated!

Yes, very big names in Darren's category.  It is gonna bug me that people are talking that John Legend may win that category "so he can get the EGOT."  That is not a good reason to give him the Emmy.  I'm sure he did well in the musical.  But people ideally should earn the win by giving the best acting performance for this award (the Emmy), and they should not be given the award because they need to stamp it on their resume that they won a rare combination of various awards (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony).

Thanks for your feedback about Kyle and Twin Peaks, Jeremy.

Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz Want to Know: Where Are All the Latinx Emmy Nominees?

July 13, 2018

What does Latinx Hollywood need to do to earn some Emmy love? In a year with plenty of striking contenders — Jane the Virgin, One Day at a Time, and Vida, just to name a few — no Latinx were recognized in the lead acting or show categories when the Television Academy announced its 2018 nominations on Thursday.

That doesn’t mean no Latinx were recognized, however. Edgar Ramirez and Ricky Martin received nods for their supporting roles on FX’s limited series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Lin-Manuel Miranda was nominated for his guest spot on Curb Your Enthusiasm. John Leguizamo was recognized for his supporting role in Waco. And there were more. But Latinx were left out of the highest-profile Emmy categories — that is, the others announced during Thursday’s live broadcast — and shows like Orange Is the New Black, Queen of the South, On My Block, Narcos, Riverdale, and Shades of Blue were completely ignored by Academy voters.

Emmys 2018: Predicting the Lead Actor in a Limited Series winner

July 13, 2018

It's a tight race for the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series award at the 2018 Emmys, but Darren Criss should take home the win.

The television Super Bowl is upon us once again, as the nominees for the 2018 Emmy Awards have finally been announced. Of course, with the announcement of the nominees come the heart-crushing snubs (no Mandy Moore again?!), the jaw-dropping surprises (Ted Danson for The Good Place… fork yes!), and the months of predictions leading up to TV’s biggest night in September. It’s time to predict who will be winning those coveted Emmys.

When it comes to the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series race, there’s a six-way embarrassment of riches. As limited series become more and more trendy, television has been drawing bigger names and better talents to lead the shows that have us binge-watching into the wee hours. This year, there’s an obvious frontrunner in The Assassination of Gianni Versace standout Darren Criss, but can he fend off the other leading men? Let’s take a closer look at the Lead Actor in a Limited Series category and place our bets on a winner.

The Contenders

Antonio Banderas in Genius: Picasso
Darren Criss in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Benedict Cumberbatch in Patrick Melrose
Jeff Daniels in The Looming Tower
John Legend in Jesus Christ Superstar
Jesse Plemons in Black Mirror

The Consensus

Who should take home the award, and who will win the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series? All signs point to Darren Criss being the answer to both of those questions. Out of the six nominees, all of which are formidable talents of seasoned actors delivering impressive performances, none have been as talked about as that of Criss. His fearless and revelatory turn as spree killer Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story earned the Glee veteran new respect from the mainstream. As a killer rather than a happy-go-lucky high school dreamer, Criss was haunting, and the role couldn’t have been tackled by any other actor.

10 Best TV Shows Of 2018 (So Far)

10 Best TV Shows of 2018 (So Far)

The strength of The People v O.J. Simpson (alongside its great cast and direction) was the way it gradually unfolded its titular case, adding new pieces each week until it all came together.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace could have followed that model, which may have guaranteed it some more hype from expectant American Crime Story fans, but instead it did the exact opposite: starting with the 'main' event, and then going backwards in time to show how and why it happened.

This isn't so much a story about a murder case as it is about making a murderer, with the Ryan Murphy series shining a light on the societal and cultural issues that ultimately led Andrew Cunanan (played by an Emmy-deserving Darren Criss) killing Versace and a number of others on his murder spree.

It delves into Cunanan's psyche, with Criss giving a performance that manages to be both unhinged and yet tragically human, and explores homophobia and what it means to be gay in America during the 90s. Uncompromising, fascinating, and with some stunning direction, this is a very different show to O.J., and might not have the same broad appeal, but is equally as deserving of your time.

The Versace: ACS moments that scored Darren Criss an Emmy nomination

After a chilling and memorable performance  by Darren Criss in The Assassination of Gianni Versace:  American Crime Story, the actor's Emmy nomination surprised no one.  Here are the moments that captured the television academy's attention most . . .

Darren Criss took on the role of spree killer Andrew Cunanan in Ryan Murphy’s FX series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. The actor’s portrayal scored him a nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series category. Other actors in the race for the big prize include Antonio Banderas in Genius: Picasso, John Legend in Jesus Christ Superstar, and Jesse Plemons in Black Mirror. All worthy talent, but we’re betting Criss will take home the honor.

Below, we take a look back Criss’ best moments as Cunanan.

Cunanan is no “Easy Lover”

Episode two “Manhunt”

This episode features the first time we see Andrew Cunanan’s devilish tricks. He and Ronnie (Max Greenfield) find an older businessman who is down for some discreet fun with Cunanan. Unfortunately for him, Cunanan had a different idea of a good time. In a scene that looks right out of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story, Cunanan covers the married man’s face in duct tape and turns up the volume to Phillip Bailey and Phil Collins’ “Easy Lover.” The man panics as he begins to suffocate, but Cunanan is busy dancing his heart out! He jumps on top of the man gasping for air and tells him to submit before cutting an air hole just in time.

A heartless Cunanan- Episode three “A Random Killing”

This entire episode showcases brilliant performances, but Darren Criss’ ruthless portrayal of Cunanan stands out. Out of all the episodes in the series, “A Random Killing,” is by far the most violent and difficult to watch. But to the cruel Cunanan, it’s just another day on his way to get to Gianni Versace.

Cunanan pumps it up – Episode four “House By The Lake”

After beating Jeff (Finn Wittrock) to death, Andrew takes off with David (Cody Fern). And instead of being afraid or feeling regret for his actions, Cunanan opens the car window and jams to Technotronic’s “Pump Up The Jam.”

Cunanan’s dad – Episode eight “Creator/Destroyer”

The moment Andrew Cunanan and Lizzie (Annaleigh Ashford) first meet is pretty fabulous! But the scene that steals the show in episode eight, “Creator/Destroyer,” is when Cunanan is forced to face the harsh reality of who his father, Modesto (Jon Jon Brinoes), really is. Angry, Cunanan tells his father he will never be like him, but he already was.

The finale – Episode nine, “Alone”

Cunanan, believing his father is coming to the rescue, sits tight with the television on. He somehow still imagines he’ll walk out of this with no consequences, but that hope quickly vanishes when his best friend Lizzie appears on television pleading Andrew to turn himself in. This is followed by an interview with David Madson’s father. Finally, the one person Cunanan still had love for, Modesto Cunanan, is on TV announcing a television program about his son, already cashing in on this tragedy. All of this breaks Cunanan as he realizes how alone he is.

Who are you rooting for? Are you hoping Darren Criss takes home the Emmy? The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards air Monday, September 17, on NBC.

Too Much Love for Versace?

Question:
I was happy for The Americans to be recognized for all-around effort, though I still hated the finale. Also, Darren Criss certainly deserved it for playing Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, but Penelope Cruz and (worse yet) Ricky Martin for supporting roles in the limited series category—they were hardly in it—prove once again that there are too many categories. — JV

Matt Roush:
There may be too many Emmy categories, but rewarding deserving supporting players in limited series/movies aren’t part of the problem. And in this case, I’d have to disagree. Cruz as Donatella made quite an impression (though I’m rooting for either Judith Light, also from Versace, or Meritt Wever in Godless), and Ricky Martin’s portrayal of Versace’s widowed mate was poignant even in just his few scenes, which is why the supporting category exists. (In that category, I’m expecting Jeff Daniels to win as the villain of Godless, although Ramirez as Versace and especially Finn Wittrock as the closeted military man in Versace were also strong.)

The Emmy nominations brought a much-deserved accolade to Darren Criss for his extraordinary work in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.” Criss was nominated for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. There is stiff competition in the category, including Antonio Banderas for “Genius: Picasso” and John Legend for “Jesus Christ Superstar,” among others, but we think the breadth of Criss’ amazing performance, the nuance with which he presented Andrew Cunanan as both tortured, closeted gay man and vicious, sociopathic serial killer, deserves the win.

If you didn’t see the series, binge it. Criss is mesmerizing. Our only surprise is that the Emmys didn’t recognize some of the other players in that amazing series, notably Judith Light. The series itself is nominated for Outstanding Limited Series, and we don’t see anything else in the category that is as good. Ryan Murphy and Bryan Falchuk should get the win.

John Legend gets some love. In a category filled with hard-core, dramatic performances, it has been interesting to see the star of a musical, Legend, get a nod in the Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category. But then “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” happened to be no ordinary musical. Though Legend doesn’t stand a chance - especially against Darren Criss’ chilling performance in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” - it’s nice to see the well-staged “Superstar” get some love

“Ryan Murphy turned to me one day with my dog-eared, well-worn script and was like, ‘You should be a director.’ Then he called and offered me the opportunity on Versace. It was just a really profound gift. I’ve never met an actor I didn’t like—even the prickly ones I love. It was a great opportunity to work with people like Darren Criss and Edgar Ramirez and all this great theater talent. Thank God you have someone like Ryan who is willing to look at someone like Jon Jon Briones and see the talent in him and give him a huge opportunity. It was a great, great first directing gig. Darren Criss makes history with Emmy nomination

'American Crime Story' star is the first Filipino American to receive a lead actor Emmy nomination.

7-12-2018

Well, hey. Alongside Sandra Oh's historic lead actress Emmy nomination, Darren Criss scored himself a nod for best lead actor in a limited series or TV movie for American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace., making him only the second actor of Asian descent to be nominated in the category, and the first ever Filipino American to receive a lead actor Emmy nomination. Heck, is he first Filipino American actor to receive an Emmy nomination, ever? Somebody please confirm.

Criss received wide acclaim for his haunting star turn as real-life killer Andrew Cunanan (who was Filipino American, like Criss). Season two of the FX true crime anthology series chronicled Cunanan's notorious 1997 murder spree, in which he killed four men before shooting famed fashion designer Gianni Versace in Miami.

Overall, the series garnered a total of 18 nominations, including nods for co-stars Edgar Ramirez, Finn Witrock and Ricky Martin(!). Criss is considered a front-runner in the limited series lead actor category, which includes Antonio Banderas (Genius), Benedict Cumberbatch (Patrick Melrose), Jeff Daniels (The Looming Tower), Jesse Plemons (USS Callister) and John Legend (Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert).
What an honor, @TelevisionAcad. Thank you so much. Truly. Wow. And a huge congrats to my fellow cast and crew of @ACSFX! @MrRPMurphy does it again! pic.twitter.com/T8Wzn8Od5e
— Darren Criss (@DarrenCriss) July 12, 2018
Although this is Criss' first Emmy nod for acting, this is not his first nomination. He went to the dance in 2015, nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics as the composer for the song "This Time" from Glee.

As many have noted, in the entire history of the Emmy Awards, only two Asian actors have ever taken home a trophy. Archie Pabjabi won outstanding supporting actress for The Good Wife in 2010, and Riz Ahmed won outstanding lead actor in a limited series for The Night Of in 2017.

That's two. Two Asian winners in 70 years. Wouldn't it be great to see two in one night?

Comments 2018 Emmy Odds: Men Fight for Gold in Competitive Acting Categories

July 23, 2018

Many times, when Emmy acting category nominations are announced you usually hear more about the snubs and flubs rather than who actually might take home the award.

That wasn’t the case this year, where it seems there was only one glaring omission among the nominations in the drama, comedy and limited series or movie acting categories for the 70thPrimetime Emmy Awards.

In the damn-fine-cup-of-coffee spit take heard around Hollywood, Kyle MacLachlan was left off the list of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his portrayal of three characters on Showtime’s “Twin Peaks.” Twitter reaction was fierce and fans are still complaining. Well they should stop – MacLachlan never had a chance of winning.

Odds in the race from BetOnline and SportsBetting have Darren Criss (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”) as the frontrunner at -375. The also-rans are Benedict Cumberbatch (“Patrick Melrose”), +300; Antonio Banderas (“Genius: Picasso”), +3000; Jesse Plemons (“USS Callister”), +3500; John Legend (“Jesus Christ Superstar”), +4500; and Jeff Daniels (“The Looming Tower”) +5000.

Criss had this award wrapped up long before the ninth and final episode of “American Crime Story” aired on FX. His forceful, narcissistic and decidedly creepy performance of serial killer Andrew Cunanan, who murdered fashion designer Gianni Versace in front of his home in Miami, made us forget he was ever in bouncy “Glee.” His nearest competition is Cumberbatch for his role as a rich junkie trying to come clean in “Patrick Melrose.”

This is sort of a silly article.  The writer complains how the Television Academy continues to nominate "favorites and holdovers from past eras," even when some actors' work this season has not been strong.  Yet, the writer suggests it would be warranted if John Legend wins so that he could have an EGOT. . . like that's a much more valid reason to give an actor an Emmy (versus the invalid reason of continuing to honor favorite nominees).  :very confused scratch

This Year’s Most and Least Exciting Emmy Races

July 23, 2018

Not all categories are created equal.

As far as award shows go, the Primetime Emmys are a bit of a puzzle. They hold a special place in my heart as the only major American award show to recognize excellence in television. They also do ill-advised things like overload viewers with “in memoriam” segments, give boatloads of awards to The Big Bang Theory, and hire SNL‘s Michael Che and Colin Jost to host in 2018. Plus, the show fills an odd time on the calendar, marking either the very late end of one award season or the early beginning of the next depending on who you ask.

In the past years, the Emmys seem to have gotten even stranger. Categories like “limited series,” which once felt bloated and unnecessary, are now prestigious and exciting, encompassing everything from sequels to miniseries to anthologies. Meanwhile, major categories have been shaken up over the blurring of genre lines–if Atlanta’s psychological horror episode “Teddy Perkins” wins an award in the comedy category this year, it might be the most depressing piece of art to ever be called comedy by the Academy. In these strange times, what can we do besides what we’ve always done when it comes to award shows? Judge them. Below, check out our breakdown on the categories which have the most and least potential to keep us on our toes come September.

[. .  . ]

MOST EXCITING: Outstanding Lead Actor in Limited Series or Movie

Darren Criss has all the buzz this year for his sensational role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
Still, there’s not a bad apple in this bunch, which also includes Benedict Cumberbatch doing some of his best work in Patrick Melrose and Jesse Plemons’ complicated and creepy loner character in Black Mirror’s excellent “USS Callister.” Plus, if John Legend wins he’ll have himself an EGOT!

This observation is very eloquently expressed.  That scene broke my heart, how David had an opportunity to escape Andrew, but he already had lost hope.  Not only did Andrew successfully persuade David that law enforcement would believe that David was Andrew's co-conspirator; Andrew had manipulated David into David himself believing his internalized self-hate made him "guilty" (David's fear of disgracing all that he has achieved in his life and also the lives of his beloved parents) and perhaps deserving of being suspected of being a co-conspirator.  The writing was so impressive in this episode and the acting really connected with me. Fantastic job of both Cody Fern and Darren!  And the music was so on-point!  Great musical choices!

Analysis Entertainment Music Supervisors Pick Their Favourite TV Syncs of 2018 So Far (Part 1)

July 25, 2018

2018 has been a great year for TV, with music playing a huge part in whether a show really works or not. With that in mind, we asked several music supervisors to pick their favourite TV sync placements of the year so far. Here’s what they came up with:

[. . . ]

Garrett McElver, SuperMusicVision (The Tick, Seal Team)

Show: American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace – Music Supervised by Amanda Krieg Thomas

Episode 4 – ‘House By The Lake’

Song: “Drive” – The Cars (on-camera performance by Aimee Mann)

“Drive” comes about midway through the season, and as a viewer we’re just so traumatized by everything that’s happened (and what we know will happen soon) that this music moment really cuts through. It’s a great showcase of the collaboration between the writers, director, executive producers, music supervisor, and Aimee Mann herself, as they’re all accomplishing a lot with a big featured song moment with an on-camera performance. We feel so helpless for the character David as he’s essentially been kidnapped by his murderous ex-lover Andrew. David’s whole life has crashed down around him, and we know there’s really no way out for him. As Andrew and David stop in a local bar during their escape out of town, we see the incredible Aimee Mann as the evening’s anonymous performer, and she begins to play a rendition of the song made famous by The Cars. David considers escaping through the bathroom window but ultimately does not, in fear of not making it very far and because Andrew’s manipulative reasoning for staying has gotten to him.

While Andrew sits at the table watching this performance by himself, we get to witness one of the very few honest human emotions from Andrew as he breaks into tears. So much of Andrew’s story showcases how manipulative and fake he is, but in this moment, something comes out. I love that this song can really resonate with both characters in this moment. Lyrically applying to David feeling lost and trapped in this situation with no literal or emotional escape. Who is going to be there for him? Who will drive him home? And also with Andrew, who we can tell thinks he’s in the right, feeling alone in his own regard. He feels he’s lost David. Andrew has put himself into this situation where murdering those in his way is the only conceivable choice left in his mind. Who’s gonna pay attention to his dreams? Who’s gonna drive him home? Seemingly no one, as he feels woefully under appreciated by the world around him. He cries at the bar, but we know these are not tears of a lesson learned, it’s fuel for his continued spree to come. Aimee Mann’s performance captures this sense of loss and dread so beautifully and hauntingly. It’s heartbreaking, it’s frustrating, it’s unfair. It’s a great scene.

Emmys 2018: Handicapping the Top Series and Performer Races

July 25, 2018

The countdown to the Emmy awards has officially begun, with excitement brewing over the Television Academy’s nomination announcements earlier this month. The celebration will only intensify in the days leading up to the 70th annual ceremony, taking place at L.A.’s Microsoft Theater on Sept. 17. Given the sheer volume of first-class returning series — and the few fresh additions — to the ballot this year, there’s plenty of suspense in store. Here, Variety breaks down the key races.

Limited Series

HBO won, well, big with “Big Little Lies” last year, but doesn’t have a project in the race this time. That could pave the way for FX to return to the winners’ circle with “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” which sees the most noms (18) of any series in the category. There is some close competition coming from Netflix’s “Godless” (12 noms), which has the advantage of having its star Jeff Daniels in two key acting races, keeping the title in conversation beyond this category. National Geographic’s “Genius: Picasso” (seven noms), TNT’s “The Alienist” (six noms) and Showtime’s “Patrick Melrose” (five noms) certainly put out respectable showings, and perennial Emmy favorite Benedict Cumberbatch could push the latter further onto voters’ radars. Still, it feels like it’s Ryan Murphy’s year to finally take the category with “Versace.”

Limited Series/Movie Actor

Last year a newcomer broke through a pack of veteran performers, and this year the category is swaying towards making that a new tradition. Darren Criss is nominated for the first time in an acting category for his turn as serial killer Andrew Cunanan in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.” He’s up against John Legend — seeing his first nomination ever, and putting him this close to EGOT status — who embodied the titular messiah in “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” Consistent Emmy favorite Benedict Cumberbatch is back on the ballot, this time for “Patrick Melrose,” and could see a surprise win, as he did back in 2014 when he triumphed over “Fargo” star Billy Bob Thornton. “Genius: Picasso’s” Antonio Banderas, “The Looming Tower’s” Jeff Daniels and Jesse Plemons from “USS Callister” round out the options. Plemons may well be the wildcard this year.

2018 Emmy Winner Predictions: Writing and Directing Categories

July 24, 2018

Limited Series could be a tough fight. The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story has the most nominations for a Limited Series/TV Movie (18) and the episode nominated was heralded as the most poignant and heartbreaking (it is) and I think those factors tip it in its favor. But Black Mirror just won here last year (with San Junipero) and its nominated TV Movie this year, USS Callister, was a massively praised hit. Scott Frank (Godless) is a respected writer in both film and television and then there’s David Lynch. Shockingly, Twin Peaks: The Return was completely snubbed in Limited Series and all acting categories but Lynch showed up here and in directing. He’s a longshot but maybe this would be a consolation but directing would make more sense for that.

WRITING FOR A LIMITED SERIES, TV MOVIE OR DRAMATIC SPECIAL

1. Tom Rob Smith, “The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” (“House By The Lake”)

2. William Bridges and Charlie Brooker, “USS Callister: Black Mirror”
3. Scott Frank, “Godless”
4. David Nicholls, “Patrick Melrose”
5. David Lynch and Mark Frost, “Twin Peaks”
6. Kevin McManus and Matthew McManus, “American Vandal” (“Clean Up”)

Limited Series is probably a closer race than it seems. The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story should be the frontrunner and another win for creator Ryan Murphy but Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert blew everyone away with 13 nominations. It’s a real force to be reckoned with here. Scott Frank is also a top contender. As the creator and sole writer/director of Godless (which has 12 nominations) voters might feel compelled to award him for such a huge undertaking. Then there’s David Lynch. Could he take one of Twin Peaks‘ nine nominations home as a win?

DIRECTING FOR A LIMITED SERIES, TV MOVIE OR DRAMATIC SPECIAL

1. Ryan Murphy, “The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” (“The Man Who Would Be Vogue”)
2. David Leveaux (director) and Alex Rudzinski (Live Television Director), “Jesus Christ Superstar: Live In Concert”
3. Scott Frank, “Godless”
4. David Lynch, “Twin Peaks”
5. Edward Berger, “Patrick Melrose”
6. Craig Zisk, “The Looming Tower” (“9/11”)
7. Barry Levinson, “Paterno”

I knew this was mentioned before, but I thought I'll post again, that since Darren is nominated for Lead Actor in a Limited Series, he submitted the entire series, whereas Supporting Actor or Actress are allowed to submit one episode.

All 6 Emmy episodes revealed for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress (Exclusive)

July 25, 2018

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal all of the Emmy episode submissions for the 2018 contenders as Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress. While lead actors and actresses must enter their entire projects, supporting players are allowed to submit just one installment of their limited series. Let’s take a look at the choices made by these six women: Sara Bareilles (“Jesus Christ Superstar”), Penelope Cruz and Judith Light (both of “The Assassination of Gianni Versace”), Adina Porter (“American Horror Story: Cult”), Merritt Wever (“Godless”) and Letitia Wright (“Black Museum: Black Mirror”).

Cruz is submitting the seventh episode, “Ascent,” which aired March 7 on FX. Official description: “Andrew Cunanan leaves behind a troubled family life, while Donatella (Cruz) struggles to find her role within the Gianni Versace empire.” This is her first career nomination.

Light is submitting the third episode, “A Random Killing,”
which aired January 31 on FX. Official description: “Chicago real estate tycoon Lee Miglin is murdered in what police describe as a random killing” as his wife Marilyn (Light) grieves. This is her fourth career nomination in prime-time, following ones for “Ugly Betty” (2007) and “Transparent” (2016, 2017).
