Our Emmys 2018 predictions: who should win, who will win, and who got snubbed
September 13, 2018
LIMITED SERIES
The nominees:
"The Alienist"
"The Assassination of Gianni Versace"
"Genius: Picasso"
"Godless"
"Patrick Melrose"
Who will win: "The Assassination of Gianni Versace." The Emmys love Ryan Murphy content, and if "the People vs OJ Simpson" is any indication, the second season of "American Crime Story" will sweep the awards this year. And it deserves the win for its unique take on the story of a serial killer that focuses on the victims, not just the monster.
Who should win: "Godless." By embracing every cliche about westerns, "Godless" was somehow something truly unique, bolstered by an incredible cast including Michelle Dockery, Jeff Daniels, and Meritt Weaver (all nominees). We also wouldn't be upset if "Patrick Melrose" wins.

LEAD ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
The nominees:
Antonia Banderas, "Genius: Picasso"
Darren Criss, "The Assassination of Gianni Versace"
Benedict Cumberbatch, "Patrick Melrose"
Jeff Daniels, "The Looming Tower"
John Legend, "Jesus Christ Superstar Live"
Jesse Plemons, "Black Mirror: USS Callister"
Who will win: Darren Criss. Criss, whose previous credits included Broadway musicals and "Glee," stunned everyone with his gripping and at times nauseating (in a good, acting way) performance as serial killer Andrew Cunanan.
Who should win: Darren Criss or Benedict Cumberbatch, who surprised people in a similar way with his wild, committed, and sometimes hilarious performance in the dark but vibrant Showtime miniseries.

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
The nominees:
Jeff Daniels, "Godless"
Brandon Victor Dixon, "Jesus Christ Superstar"
Ricky Martin, "Assassination of Gianni Versaci"
Edgar Ramirez, "Assassination of Gianni Versace"
Finn Whitrock, "Assassination of Gianni Versace"
Michael Stuhlbarg, "The Looming Tower"
John Leguizamo, "Waco"
Who will win: Jeff Daniels, "Godless." Daniels is an awards-friendly actor and has won Emmys in the past, so he has an advantage.
Who should win: Ricky Martin. Martin didn't have much to do, but he put so much into it and is a really, really great actor.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
The nominees:
Adina Porter, "American Horror Story: Cult"
Letitia Wright, "Black Mirror: Black Museum"
Merritt Weaver, "Godless"
Sara Bereilles, "Jesus Chris Superstar"
Penelope Cruz, "Assassination of Gianni Versace"
Judith Light, "Assassination of Gianni Versace"
Who will win: Penelope Cruz. Cruz did some of her best work since "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" as Donatella Versace on the FX series. She brought empathy to a woman who has, for a long time, been the butt of way too many jokes.
Who should win: Judith Light. Light got a nomination is this category instead of guest actress despite being in only two episodes. And she deserves it. Her performance as a woman coming to terms with secrets her murdered husband kept from her for decades is a career best.

Emmy Predictions 2018: Who Will Win?

Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose
Jeff Daniels, The Looming Tower
John Legend, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert
Jesse Plemons, U.S.S. Callister (Black Mirror)
The Assassination of Gianni Versace didn’t make quite the cultural impact of its American Crime Story predecessor about O.J. Simpson, but Darren Criss’s performance was easy to single out; playing the serial killer Andrew Cunanan as some combination of rejected puppy and bona fide sociopath, Criss was magnetic and terrifying in a way he’d never been before onscreen, a compelling anchor in a series that rambled too far into darkness for some. Given the show’s muted reception, though, Criss might be usurped in the end by some of his competitors, most likely Benedict Cumberbatch (a previous winner for Sherlock) or maybe even __John Legend,__who recently earned EGOT status for producing Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert and might just add another Emmy for his titular performance. But if Emmy voters actually watched Versace, even in part, it seems difficult to look away from what Criss has accomplished.

2018 Emmy predictions: Picks for the moral victory
Directing for a Limited Series
Who Should Win: Ryan Murphy, The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (“The Man Who Would Be Vogue”)
While many folks were underwhelmed by the follow-up to The People v. O.J. Simpson, it was an undeniably beautiful show. Nothing displayed just how gorgeous this show’s mostly coastal scenery could be than the season’s opening sequence, directed by Murphy and brilliantly acted by Darren Criss and Edgar Ramirez.
Seriously, watch these videos. It’s a master class in building tension until the bubble bursts. Starting out the show with the titular assassination and working backwards was a bold move, and one could argue about whether it worked or not. One thing’s for sure though: The first 10 minutes of Versace‘s first episode contained some of the best directing ever featured on the small screen.
Supporting Actress, Limited Series or TV Movie
Who Should Win: Judith Light, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Leave it to Judith Light to upstage Penelope freakin’ Cruz on her own show, one in which she was also nominated and wonderful in her own way. But she wasn’t Light, who brought such a sweet exterior masking clear inner turmoil to the long-suffering wife of a clearly gay man who was (spoiler alert but not really because it’s based on a true story) murdered by Andrew Cunanan.
The fact that Light has yet to win an Emmy for her incredible work on Transparent is criminal, so this is a chance for the Television Academy to right that injustice. Light may have had limited screen time on Versace, but she made as big of an impression as any of the series’ big-name stars.

Best actor, limited series or TV movie
Who Should Win: Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace
This is most definitely NOT the Darren Criss Glee and Broadway fans have become accustomed to seeing. Criss’ Andrew Cunanan is one of the most unassumingly terrifying characters you’ll ever see in any medium, a man who wants the finer things in life but unwilling to do any of the work required to earn his coveted lifestyle.
Versace makes a point to peel back the layers behind Cunanan that led him to assassinate Versace, and Criss makes him just sympathetic enough that you have to wonder if he could’ve been saved. Criss should get the Emmy for showing a range audiences and critics alike had no idea he was capable of portraying.
Best limited series
What Should Win: The Assassination of Gianni Versace
The entire limited series section of this list feels like a Versace ad, but that’s just because Ryan Murphy proved once again how good he is at crafting first seasons of TV shows. It’s why O.J. worked so well, and it’s why Versace was able to tell such a fascinating tale about two very different figures on a fatal collision course with each other.
The performances are impressive from top to bottom (even Ricky Martin!), and visually it’s a gorgeous mix of sparkling vistas and the grimier parts of town where Cunanan hung out, longing for more. It’s a less well-known story than O.J., but that just made for more satisfying twists and turns. There is no question it deserves this award.

Outstanding Limited Series

Should Win: Godless or Patrick Melrose
Will Win: The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
It will be difficult to top The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story; it has the star wattage (Darren Criss, Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez, Ricky Martin), the high production value and centers on a story the whole world was enthralled by. There's no reason to think the frontrunner won't be handsomely rewarded on Emmy night.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie
Antonio Banderas, Genius: Picasso
Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

John Legend, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert
Jesse Plemons, USS Callister (Black Mirror)
Should Win: Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose
Will Win: Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
This may be Darren Criss' to lose for his chilling performance as Gianni Versace's killer, Andrew Cunanan, in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. The category, however, touts some of the strongest competition, with stars like John Legend, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons, hoping to hear their name called on Monday evening, so it is conceivable that someone like Cumberbatch or even Legend -- who's already completed the rare EGOT -- could steal a win.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie
Sara Bareilles, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert
Penelope Cruz, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Judith Light, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Adina Porter, American Horror Story: Cult
Merritt Wever, Godless
Letitia Wright, Black Museum (Black Mirror)
Should Win: Penelope Cruz or Judith Light, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Will Win: Merritt Wever, Godless
Remember when Merritt Wever tearfully (and adorably) won her first Emmy in 2013 for Nurse Jackie? Wever is our choice to take home her second career Emmy statuette, this time for her part as Mary Agnes, a widow who is in a relationship with Callie, a former prostitute turned teacher. Penelope Cruz has the cache to win any award, especially one for Donatella Versace in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, and Judith Light turns in a devastatingly heartbreaking performance as the wife of a brutally murdered businessman by Cunanan's hand. While we think Wever has the goods to pull off a win, the ladies of Versace could prove victorious.

"Godless" (Netflix)
"Patrick Melrose" (Showtime)
Should win: "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story"
Will win: "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story"
While not as popular or socially relevant as "The People v. O.J. Simpson," the second installment of Ryan Murphy's true crime anthology was operatically epic, beautiful and grotesque at once. It has solid competitors in "Patrick Melrose" and "Godless," but Murphy is an Emmy favorite, and "Versace" will easily slide to victory.
Lead actor, limited series/TV movie
Antonio Banderas, "Genius: Picasso" (National Geographic)
Darren Criss, "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" (FX)
Benedict Cumberbatch, "Patrick Melrose" (Showtime)
Jeff Daniels, "The Looming Tower" (Hulu)
John Legend, "Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert" (NBC)
Jesse Plemons, "Black Mirror: USS Callister" (Netflix)
Should win: Benedict Cumberbatch, "Patrick Melrose"
Will win: Darren Criss, "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story"
The race between Criss and Cumberbatch is a title match between two very talented guys in their career-best performances. In "Versace," Criss makes everyone forget about "Glee" as Andrew Cunanan, who killed designer Gianni Versace and four other men in 1997. In "Melrose," Cumberbatch takes us through the life of a deeply damaged man, who was abused in childhood and abused substances as an adult. Cumberbatch does something just a little bit harder than Criss, but Criss has the momentum, the flashier project and the Ryan Murphy machine behind him.

Emmy Award predictions: Will ‘Game of Thrones’ regain its crown?

Limited Series
“The Alienist” (TNT); “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” (FX); “Genius: Picasso” (National Geographic); “Godless” (Netflix); “Patrick Melrose” (Showtime).
Should win: “Godless”
Will win: “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”
“Godless” is a gritty, occasionally grisly, feminist Western that was handsomely crafted and well-acted. But “Assassination” carries the “American Crime Story” brand (plus 18 nominations) and is likely more familiar to voters.
Lead Actor, Limited Series or Movie
Antonio Banderas, “Genius: Picasso”; Darren Criss, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”; Benedict Cumberbatch, “Patrick Melrose”; Jeff Daniels, “The Looming Tower” (Hulu); John Legend, “Jesus Christ Superstar” (NBC); Jesse Plemons, “Black Mirror: USS Callister” (Netflix).
Should win: Benedict Cumberbatch
Will win: Darren Criss
First of all, we’ll probably have to go to confession for picking against Jesus, but Cumberbatch reached a new acting peak in playing a troubled addict. On the other hand, voters likely admired how Criss, a former “Glee” star, played against type so convincingly as Versace’s killer.
