Darren Criss’ annual Elsie Fest music festival is returning to New York for its third year, and to help celebrate the announcement, Criss dropped a cover tune of the Les Miserables’ classic, “I Dreamed a Dream.”
Watch Criss perform a stripped-down version of the tune below:
The release of “I Dreamed a Dream” continues a busy year for the Emmy Award-nominated Criss. Earlier in 2017, he and his brother Chuck Criss teamed up as the pop duo Computer Games and released the Lost Boys Life project. In addition, Darren has been busy filming The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, in which Criss co-stars as Versace’s killer, Andrew Cunanan.
Elsie Fest, an outdoor music festival celebrating stars and songs from the stage and screen, will return for its third go-round on Oct. 8 at the SummerStage in Central Park in New York. This will be the first time the event will be held in Central Park, after being staged at Coney Island in 2016 and Pier 97 in 2015. Pre-sale tickets to the show become available Aug. 1.
The lineup for the 2017 Elsie Fest has not been announced, but previous performers at the event include three-time Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown, three-time Emmy Award nominee Tituss Burgess, Tony and Grammy Award winner Cynthia Erivo, Tony nominee Megan Hilty, Tony and Grammy winner Leslie Odom Jr., Academy Award and Tony-winning songwriting team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Tony winner Lea Salonga, Aaron Tveit and Evan Rachel Wood.

Start spreading the news: Alan Cumming, Lea Michele and Darren Criss will headline the third annual Elsie Fest music festival on Oct. 8 in New York. The trio of stars will be joined at Central Park’s SummerStage by special guests Ingrid Michaelson and Norm Lewis. The event -- which celebrates stars and songs from the stage and screen -- will be hosted by radio personality Elvis Duran.
"Being a ‘musical theater fan’ has never been just about loving musical theater,” says Criss, co-founder of Elsie Fest, in a press statement. “It’s about loving the things in pop culture that inspire it; from the actors, recording artists and personalities, to the songs -- which not only include Broadway and Great American songbook classics, but hits from film, TV, radio and the Internet. Elsie Fest brings all of that together in one place. It’s a pop culture cabaret."
. . . Slated for special guest performances are Michaelson (who has notched five top 40-charting albums on the Billboard 200 and is currently on Broadway in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) and Tony and Grammy nominee Lewis.
Pre-sale tickets to the show went on sale today (Aug. 1) via ElsieFest.com, while the general on-sale begins on Aug. 4 on Ticketfly.com. Additional performers and guests are slated to be announced at a later date.

Alan is probably one of the first people, I guess, Hollywood folks, that I met when I kind of got invited into the proverbial castle, I guess. I came to New York, like Glee was just starting, I got invited to some thingy-thing because of that. And I was at some screening and Alan Cumming was there and I was so excited, I was like, oh my god. My girlfriend and I were like, let’s just go do it, let’s go talk to him. And we somehow convinced him to come out to a bar with us. And that was, I don’t know, seven or eight years ago, and we’ve been friends ever since. We’ve done concerts together, we’ve done so much.

I Dreamed a Dream – Darren Criss
Ever-so-dreamy Darren Criss has a talent for stunning teenage fangirls and music lovers alike with silvery vocals fit for a Disney Prince – funny enough, the guy actually shot to cyber-fame through his acoustic YouTube cover of The Little Mermaid’s ‘Part of Your World’. Last week, the Very Potter Musical star was back at it with another classic cover for fellow thespians, Les Miserables’ ‘I Dreamed a Dream,’ a take with only his golden voice and guitar for a very calming, albeit solemn performance. If by any chance you had an (oddly specific) craving for a show-tune with an acoustic twist, these two and half minutes are all you need.

Speaking of Les Miz, I also had Darren Criss on Seth Speaks and he was talking about the third edition of Elsie Fest, his big New York cabaret festival. This year it’s in Central Park and he has some amazing guests lined up! Look at ElsieFest.com. Also, (here’s the Les Miz connection) he’s released an acoustic/folk version of “I Dreamed A Dream.” I didn’t know he played guitar so well! Listen!

Where Can Broadway Fans Let Loose and Get 'Rowdy?' Darren Criss Has the Answer
August 8, 2017
The third annual Elsie Fest, which celebrates music from stage and screen, will take place October 8.
Elsie Fest celebrates its third consecutive year this fall, and co-creator Darren Criss wants you to be something you should never be in a Broadway theatre: “rowdy.”
The outdoor celebration gives Broadway fans the opportunity to experience their favorite stars in an environment where they can be themselves; audiences aren't tied to their seats here.
This year, the musical theatre-centric festival will take place October 8 at SummerStage in Central Park.
“There’s an enthusiasm with the fan community of musical theatre that we’re so blessed with that lends itself to being rowdy and enthusiastic,” Criss tells Playbill. “I wanted to give them the venue to do that.”
This applies to the performers as well: “The Lea Salongas and Aaron Tveits of the world, they play Carnegie hall and 54 Below and these very lush joints. It was really fun for me to see them onstage [last year] in a rock-and-roll setting, which is something they’re not used to either… Everybody kind of wins.”
Criss is set to headline the event alongside his Glee co-star and fellow Broadway alum Lea Michele and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming. To Criss, these collaborations and reunions are what make Elsie Fest so special. Glee fans can expect a collection of songs Criss and Michele never got to sing together on the show.
Elsie Fest 2017 will also feature special appearances by recording artist Ingrid Michaelson (currently making her Broadway debut in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) and Tony nominees Norm Lewis and Jeremy Jordan. Additional performers and special guests will be announced at a later date.
“I always get these delusions of grandeur of putting people with other people,” Criss says of the starry lineup. “I want Ingrid to sing with everybody; I want to sing with Ingrid because I’m a huge fan of hers. It’s so cool when artists join the lineup and they get really excited. Like, ‘Would so-and-so be interested in doing a song together?’ 99 percent of the time, people are like, ‘Oh, hell yeah.’ In what other world would they be able to that?”
Over the past two years, Elsie Fest has featured composers such as Jason Robert Brown and the Tony- and Oscar-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul—writers fans don’t typically have the chance to see sing their own scores.
Criss has dreamed up a few composers he’d like to see take the stage: “Stephen Sondheim, I’d love it if you played a couple songs.” He also mentions the late Howard Ashman, who collaborated with Alan Menken on Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Little Shop of Horrors.
“If Howard was still with us, I think he’d be the kind of guy that would not only dig this kind of festival, but he’d be a person that I’d love to have up there. The stories he could tell alone in between numbers would just be amazing.”
Tickets for Elsie Fest, co-created and produced by Criss, Ricky Rollins, and Jordan Roth, are now on sale at ElsieFest.com. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fight AIDS.

Welcome to the new episode of the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, your one-stop-shop for all things pop on Billboard's weekly charts. In addition, you can always count on a lively discussion about the latest pop news, fun chart stats and stories, new music, and guest interviews with music stars and folks from the world of pop.

On the latest show, not only do we welcome back original Pop Shop host Jason Lipshutz (more on Jason’s return in a moment!), but we also boast an interview with friend-of-the-podcast Darren Criss. The singer/songwriter/actor called in to the show to chat about the third annual Elsie Fest music festival, which will take place on Oct. 8 at New York’s Central Park SummerStage.
Criss, who co-created the festival, will co-headline the concert this year, alongside his former Glee cast member Lea Michele and Alan Cumming. They’ll be joined by special guests Jeremy Jordan, Norm Lewis and Ingrid Michaelson. The show celebrates the music and stars from the stage and screen, and previous lineups have boasted performers like Tony Award and Grammy Award winner Cynthia Erivo, Tony nominee Megan Hilty, Tony and Grammy winner Leslie Odom Jr. and Aaron Tveit.
“Elsie is really a pop culture cabaret,” Criss tells Billboard (listen below). “It's not just a Broadway thing. Because being a musical theater fan is so much more than just musical theater. It's about loving all the things that inspire it. And so when you start looking at it from that way, you start realizing how huge of a spectrum this lineup can cover.”
In the Pop Shop Shop podcast, Criss also says to expect a previously unheard duet from him and Michele at Elsie Fest. “Although Lea and I have sung many times (together) before, I think what we'll aim for is to do a song that no one has ever seen us do together. I'm all about that. I encourage the artists to get real excited about that.”
Criss says that his ultimate future goal with Elsie Fest is to curate a lineup of performers that all have a true love for musical theater – from Broadway-and-showtunes leaning artists like pop icon Barbra Streisand to rock gods like Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong.
“You're like, 'what do they have to do together?' Criss asks. “Well, they both have a love for Broadway, and they both have a deep connection to it, and that's so cool.” (Streisand is a two-time Tony nominee and a winner of a Special Tony Award. Armstrong wrote the book and lyrics for the Broadway musical American Idiot.) “That's the headspace that I want people to get into,” Criss says. “It's not just Broadway performers that have ended up in TV and film, it's people from all walks of the superstar life.”
