darrencriss   Proud to be a supporter of @musiciansoncall and delivering the healing power of music to half a million patients and caregivers #MOCMoments

Note:
That background pic in Darren's instagram message (see above) is a reference to when he visited Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA in 2013.   See UCLA Health.org's instagram message (below).   This is the reason why Darren is my favorite celebrity and why I will continue to be a loyal fan:  His kindness to others.  As beautiful as he is on the outside, he is gorgeous on the inside.  Such a beautiful, kind, caring soul.

uclahealth: Throwback to Glee star and singer/songwriter Darren Criss’s (@darrencriss) visit to Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA, where he performed with Musicians On Call Bedside Performance Program (@musiciansoncall). Although Darren had many other commitments that day, he ended up staying for hours to play for the young patients and their families.

2013:  Darren's visit to Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA through Musicians on Call:

The photographer who followed the musicians around the hospital as they sang to the children, wrote this note.

MUSICIANS ON CALL x DARREN CRISS (October 21, 2013)

I had the amazing opportunity to shoot for Musicians On Call, a music therapy volunteer group, and follow Darren Criss (of Glee) while he did some bedside serenading at the UCLA Childrens Hospital.

I did my senior project in high school on music therapy and as someone who grew up playing and studying music, I know the impact that it can have on an individual and their feelings. It was totally great learning about Musicians On Call and hearing about the wonderful things they are doing in the world of music therapy with those who are hospitalized. It was even better seeing it in action! Darren is such a character it was so much fun watching him interact with the kids and incorporate their names and interests into songs so they could really relate to the music and to him. All the kids seemed to have a lot of fun there were tons of smiles and some singing. You really could tell that it lifted the spirits of the whole ward, doctors and nurses included.

The part that she wrote about Darren trying to connect with the kids by him adding their names and their interests into the lyrics is just so him.  It's normally important to him that he connect with the audience.  But in this case, while singing to these kids who really needed the extra sunshine, I can imagine how much more Darren tried to have the children connect to him and to the music.

I didn't notice this the first time I saw these pictures.  But look at where this little girl is standing, while Darren stands at the other end of the hall.

haleyjames

Darren appears to be playing the guitar for her, and I'm guessing he probably was singing some lyrics urging her to walk to him.  Now look at where the little girl is standing in the photo below:

So Darren is selling a new T-shirt through Represent.com (the same site that we were able to get the "Not Alone" t-shirt).

It's a cute shirt, with Darren's cute 16-year old face.  (According to Darren, this is the facial expression his 16-year old self would have made, being lovesick over Ariel, from The Little Mermaid.   :amused )

A portion of the proceeds will go to a good cause, Musicians On Call.

Update on the auction held by Charity Buzz.

The auction closed at $2,250 (over the $1,500 estimated value).    The proceeds go to Musicians on Call.

Yea!   So wonderful that some more funds were earned for this worthy cause.  Also, congrats to the highest bidder, for the 2 free tickets to The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl, on June 6, AND for being able to meet Darren backstage that night!  I'm guessing you must be quite pleased.   :amused   :so happy

Darren participated in a video released by the Human Rights Campaign, in remembrance of the 49 people who lost their lives in the Orlando tragedy (video produced by Ryan Murphy) .   In addition to honoring the 49 individuals who lost their lives on June 12 at the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub (Orlando, FL), the video urged people to work to stop LGBTQ-focused hate violence, and to press our legislators to pass reasonable gun control.   HRC released the video on June 29, 2016.

Stop the Hate: 49 Celebrities Honor 49 Victims of Orlando Tragedy in Ryan Murphy-Produced Tribute
Video Description from YouTube:
"For too long, a toxic combination of anti-LGBTQ hate and easy access to guns has put LGBTQ people at disproportionate risk of violence and murder. On June 12, forty-nine innocent people – most of them Latinx – were killed at Pulse nightclub in Orlando simply because of who they were. It’s on all of us to keep their memories alive, and to ensure part of their legacy becomes meaningful action to end hate violence. Join the Human Rights Campaign and urge your legislator to support legislation that will ensure LGBTQ people are safe and equal in every community and find out how to support the survivors and families of the Orlando victims. Learn more at:

http://www.hrc.org/StopTheHate

Special thanks to Ryan Murphy, Ned Martel and their colleagues at Ryan Murphy Television for making this project possible and all of our friends in the entertainment community for their support of this project including (in order of appearance) Lady Gaga, Chris Pine, Cuba Gooding Jr., Connie Britton, Matt Bomer, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Lea Michele, Colton Haynes, Sophia Bush, Jane Fonda, Harry Shum Jr., Denis O’Hare, Rob Reiner, Melissa Benoist, Caitlyn Jenner, Édgar Ramírez, Max Greenfield, Chaz Bono, Cheyenne Jackson, Emma Roberts, Kerry Washington, George Lopez, Evan Rachel Wood, Sofia Vergara, Diego Boneta, Nina Jacobson, Demi Lovato, Tyler Oakley, Yeardley Smith, Kid Cudi, Kaitlin Olson, Kevin McHale, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lee Daniels, Chace Crawford, Evan Peters, Gerard Butler, Katey Sagal, John Stamos, Laverne Cox, Jordana Brewster, Wes Bentley, Finn Wittrock, Darren Criss, Kathy Bates, Anna Paquin, Guillermo Díaz and Joe Mantello."

The opening words of the video:

"On June 12, 2016, a gunman killed 49 people and injured 53 others inside Pulse, an LGBTQ nightclub in Orlando, Florida, on Latin night.

It was both the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman and the deadliest incident of violence against LGBTQ people in U.S history.

The victims live on in our memories."

"Darren Criss, Matt Bomer & More Honor Orlando Victims in New Ryan Murphy-Produced Tribute"

"Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, released a special tribute to the 49 victims of the Orlando shooting at Pulse nightclub on Latin night. The 18-minute tribute directed by Emmy Award-winning Ryan Murphy and NEd Martel, with the support of their colleagues at Ryan Murphy Television features a diverse cast of 49 actors, directors and other entertainment leaders recounting individual stories of the people killed in our nation’s deadliest mass shooting. Viewers are asked to visit http://stopthehate.hrc.org/ and take action by supporting victims’ families and survivors through healorlando.org, as well as contacting legislators to demand passage of LGBTQ protections and common-sense gun violence prevention measures."

The Hollywood Reporter  article on behind-the-scene making of the video, with all those involved stressing the desire to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragedy, as well as the need for change in terms of combating LGBTQ-focused hate and pressing for reasonable gun control:

These items and more are open for bids at qtego.net/qlink/broadwaylove.

-BroadwayWorld

I love all the efforts from Broadway to raise funds for the victims of the Orlando mass shooting and the LGBTQ community in Orlando.   One way was through the Broadway Records recording of "What the World Needs Now" BroadwayWorld, and another is the benefit concert "From Broadway with Love."    It's so nice to see Darren being supportive of these efforts.   What an original idea for Darren to donate a Hedwig carwash.  I'll be interested in following the bids on that.   :amused

The "From Broadway with Love:  A Benefit Concert for Orlando" is created by Seth Rudetsky, Kenny Howard, and James Wesley.

The concert will take place in Orlando, FL and as stated in the BroadwayWorld article, is sold out.

But you may buy the CD and DVD of "From Broadway with Love" benefit concert, and help show your support to the LGBTQ community in Orlando and the victims of the Orlando tragedy.

"A forthcoming CD and DVD of the July 25 concert will be available at BroadwayRecords.com, Amazon.com, and more, with 100 percent of profits benefiting the three designated nonprofits."

And because Darren is who he is, someone who tries to help different causes when he can, he also is showing his support for the "Better Make Room" cause, which was spearheaded by First Lady Michelle Obama.

More information about "Better Make Room":
The White House Fact Sheet wrote:That is why, as part of her Reach Higher initiative, the First Lady is announcing a new public awareness campaign, Better Make Room, to target Generation Z, or young people ages 14-19, to celebrate education, change the national conversation, and reach students directly where they are and give them a space to create content while also navigating the college-going process. This campaign will leverage traditional and new media platforms to celebrate student stories in the same way that we often celebrate celebrities and athletes. With partners in the business, philanthropic, media, and education realm, this campaign will stretch across the country to inspire students and give them the tools they need to reach higher for college.

So people may bid on Darren's item, even if they do not currently have a ticket.   So this is an even better bargain, since with the price of the winning bid, one gets not just a seat in the orchestra for a concert that is sold out, but one gets the seat on stage too!

As she tweeted the deadline to bid is July 24 at 11:59 pm.  I'm not sure if that's 11:59 EST or PST, but I'm assuming it's EST.

And the bid on Darren's item as of the time she tweeted (yesterday July 21 at 1:38 pm) was at $740.

"From Broadway With Love" Benefit Concert for Orlando (July 25, 2016)

From dailydarrennews:

Wow!   The "From Broadway with Love" benefit concert raised $60,000!   That's truly impressive.  I just idolize Seth Rudetsky for so often working with others to raise funds for those in need of support.    And how wonderful that tickets to the concert were provided at no cost to employees of the Pulse night club, and others affected by the mass shooting.

From Broadway with Love Concert Raises Thousands; Recording Available for Pre-order

The July 25 concert From Broadway With Love: A Benefit Concert for Orlando, which brought together some of Broadway’s biggest stars to support the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida, Hope and Help Center and Zebra Coalition, raised more than $60,000 via ticket sales and an online auction.

The concert, which sold out within two hours of tickets going on sale, took place at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Over 300 tickets were provided at no cost to Pulse employees and others who were affected by the mass shooting that occurred at Pulse nightclub June 11.

A live recording of the event, available on CD, DVD and Blu-ray, is available for pre-order at broadwayrecords.com.

The CD/DVD/BluRay is going for $29.95, and will be released early Fall 2016.

"Net proceeds raised from the performance (royalties and artist fees waived) by From Broadway With Love: A Benefit Concert For Orlando will be donated equally between the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida, Hope and Help Center of Central Florida and Zebra Coalition."

Darren sang Wig in a Box (from Hedwig and the Angry Inch) tonight, at Voices for the Voiceless:  Stars for Foster Kids (benefiting the organization You Gotta Believe, a charity whose goal is to find permanent homes for older kids and teens in the foster care system, who are at risk of being homeless once they age out of the foster system).  I'm so glad Darren was able to participate tonight.   Such a wonderful cause, once again organized by the kind-hearted Seth Rudetsky and his husband, James Wesley.

Media Coverage of Voices for the Voiceless:  Stars for Foster Kids.   It is a very interesting article to read.  I didn't know that Megan Hilty and Rosie Perez were foster kids.

A short excerpt:
NewYork.com wrote:
Chita Rivera, Darren Criss and More Perform in Broadway Benefit Concert for Foster Kids

Broadway legend Chita Rivera, Darren Criss (Glee), Megan Hilty (Smash), Orfeh (Legally Blonde), Tony Yazbeck (On the Town), Stephanie Mills (The Wiz), NFL wide receiver Dale Moss and recording artist Gloria Gaynor were just a few of the stars headlining the second annual Voices for the Voiceless: Stars for Foster Kids benefit concert on September 12 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

On the set of the theater’s current tenant Kinky Boots, the celebrities raised their voices in support of You Gotta Believe, New York’s only non-profit specifically dedicated to finding permanent families for foster care youth, 13 and over, who are difficult to place because of their age. Every year, nearly 25,000 kids in the U.S. age out of the foster care system and must transition into adulthood without the support and love of a “forever” family. The event was produced and hosted by Sirius/XM radio host Seth Rudetsky and his husband, producer James Wesley. “There is a need for people to be aware that there are children out there that need homes,” Rivera explained on the pre-show red carpet, “that need love, that need support to grow up to be responsible and wonderful human beings. You need family, and James and Seth brought it to my attention and to everybody here. I hope more people will be interested.”

From dailydarrennews:

A high-quality video by You Gotta Believe of Darren's performance of Wig in a Box at the Voices for the Voiceless:  Stars for Foster Kids charitable event.  He sounds good.  I love how much Darren can color his voice with emotion.  You can just feel Hedwig's sadness and longing in his voice.

He didn't forget the words he sang, like I thought he did, based solely on the tweets from Today on Broadway.  (It's just that he made a mistake when he was directing the audience on a sing-along.)  Very nice performance.  :happy face

Remembered the words and still has the moves down, too. Who needs rehearsal? Razz

Beautiful gif, Lin.  Thanks for posting it.  I love those comparisons!  (I wonder if Trask will be working with Darren for the tour?  Or Spencer Liff, since Darren said there are a few changes.  I thought he said there were changes in the choreography?  Do you remember?)

I'm a big fan of those comparisons, too. There was another one from Hedwig's closing night that I almost posted just because I love those gifsets so much, but I decided that was a little too offtopic for this thread. But here's the link in case you're interested. :happy face

I'm not sure Stephen Trask would be needed for rehearsal, but I hope we get some quotes from him at that event he's doing in San Fran with Lena and Darren. He's such a Darren fanboy.
I think Darren mentioned the set is a bit different, so I'm sure they'll have to adapt the choreography a little. Didn't DDN post something about Paul McGill? Maybe he's in charge of choreography if there are just some smaller changes.

Aw, thanks for the link to the other gif set, Lin.  Feel free to post it in this thread, or in the Hedwig--Broadway thread (either one is ok; I'll re-post this little discussion in the Hedwig tour thread).  It brings back such lovely memories.

@Lin wrote:I'm not sure Stephen Trask would be needed for rehearsal, but I hope we get some quotes from him at that event he's doing in San Fran with Lena and Darren. He's such a Darren fanboy.

Yes, always fun to hear Stephen speak.  And I love how supportive Stephen is of Darren.  It's really nice to see.

That's right, it was about some set changes.  Thanks Lin!   And you're right again about Paul McGill.  I forgot that dailydarrennews posted about him.  You have a great memory, Lin!

From @DarrenArmy:

BroadwayBox wrote:Hot Clip of the Day: Start Your Week with Darren Criss' Live "Wig in a Box"

Each day, the Bbox team trolls YouTube for the hot clip—sometimes it's a brand-new moment and sometimes it's a throwback to an oldie but goodie. No matter what praise hands are shot up, pearls are clutched and the repeat button is hit.

"Wig in a Box" (Darren Criss, Hedwig and the Angry Inch)

Ulterior Motives: Criss, along with Chita Rivera, Megan Hilty, Seth Rudetsky, Stephanie Mills, & many more, took the stage the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on September 11 to raise money and awareness at the Voices for the Voiceless: Stars for Foster Kids benefit concert. Proceeds from the evening directly benefit You Gotta Believe, New York’s only nonprofit specifically focused on finding permanent families for youth in foster care aged 13 years and older.

Ultimate [raise your hands] moment:   Loving the slow, powerful lead in. He SLAYS. (You even hear say Seth say, "nice" at one point during it.)

GIF-able moments:
