Darren Criss, 31, who bagged the Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for portraying serial killer Andrew Cunanan in Ryan Murphy’s “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” became the first Filipino-American to win a Golden Globe in this category.

I thought Darren gave a fantastic interview!  I  thought his words were eloquent and full of thought.  He was humble, funny, and charming.  I liked what he said about the reasons why it was important to Ryan to do this project, The Assassination of Gianni Versace:  American Crime Story, with the core reason why the project was so important to Ryan is because Ryan is very interested in social issues and the issue of homophobia that is prevalent in society.  The story was hilarious too, how Darren texted an ellipsis plus a question mark, and Ryan's equally hilarious reply text, "why, did you sell a pilot or something?"  haha!    It's sweet how Darren wanted to share how each of the other Emmy nominees in Darren's category inspired Darren, and contributed to Darren's  life and Darren's education in acting.  Richard Ridge is so kind too--calling Darren's Emmy speech flawless and his Emmy win was so well-deserved.   I also loved how in response to Richard Ridge's question of the best advice that Darren lives by, Darren mentioned that's it's important to know the name of the camera person and getting to know the folks who were on the ground with you--those folks whose job it is to make your life better--how it's important to make that effort.  And it's so great that Richard Ridge knew that Darren was always like that--that Darren always made that effort to get to know everyone's names, that Darren has always done that.  And then Darren credited his parents for that.  And I think that is just so fantastic, how his parents instilled in Darren the importance of kindness and of recognizing everyone's worth, of embracing how every person matters.  One of my absolute favorite things about Darren is this.  (I remember Darren was in a photoshoot with a respected magazine, I think it was The Hollywood Reporter, with a group of prominent actors collected for a group shot.  I think the theme was recognizing how important supporting actors are to their shows.  So here was a group of respected actors, and I can imagine Darren was pretty star-struck with all these important actors gathered together and that Darren was selected to be a part of this prestigious group of actors.  But the thing that really struck me was that I saw a photo or maybe it was a video of Darren shaking the hand of the photographer for that photoshoot, and I thought, that is just so Darren, to recognize the importance of this photographer who is working hard to make this photoshoot of these respected actors go smoothly.  )   I wish more people were like this, because if that was true, this world would have a lot less people suffering, don't you think? 

I like the loud voice from the audience at the end of the talk, yelling "bravo!" 

Anyway, I really, really enjoyed this interview and I thought Darren did a outstanding job.

But he dove in and tackled the part with so much research and love and kindness and beauty. Edgar has such a wonderful humanity and love of all he brings to every scene, every moment. Looking sharp in a modern tux by Armani—no, not by Versace—Darren was beaming with pure joy.

Congratulated on making history as the first Filipino-American to win an Emmy lead actor award for his acclaimed portrayal of Andrew Cunanan in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” Darren said, “I feel like the title is much bigger than myself. It’s truly an honor. I’m so happy to be representing so many people who share my background and, there are some Filipino or half-Filipino kids out there who can be encouraged by this and, hopefully, we’ll see them very soon at the Emmys.”

On winning his first major acting award for a role that for the first time hewed to his Fil-Am heritage, Darren said, “I’ve always been so thrilled to be Filipino. It’s truly one of my favorite things about myself. And this is the first time in my professional life that people have been curious or asked about my background. I think that is mainly due to the fact that there haven’t been roles that utilized my background or that lined up with the background that I have.”

“Above all else, I’m just happy that it was a complex role with far more than one side of him (Cunanan). It was a challenge to bring to life somebody who was complex, tragic and very sad. And to be half-Filipino and bring that to life with the ethnic background I have is a real privilege.”

At 31, the second youngest to win the Emmy best actor in a limited series or movie prize (the youngest winner was Anthony Murphy, in 1973), Darren shared what he felt when his name was called at Microsoft Theater: “I’m just so glad that I had so many cast members and colleagues from the show around me. Because this is only worth celebrating if I’m with them.

“If I had been by myself, this would have been a very empty victory. So, it’s nice to be in such a large ensemble. I was thrilled for them because this is a big win for them, as well.”

The former “Glee” star introduced us to his family when they walked in at Vibiana—mom Cerina, dad Charles and brother Chuck. He said he was blessed to grow up with this family. “As I said in my speech, unlike Andrew, I was very fortunate to be raised in an extraordinarily loving home, which is very different from the  broken home he came up in. It’s no wonder that it makes quite a difference.

“I really wanted them to be here tonight so that I could thank them, and that they know the way they brought me up is directly connected to being here.”

As for what’s next, the singer-actor-composer said, “I have a lot of loose ends I have to tie up, at least for the remainder of the year.”

Awww, I'm glad you didn't chew a hole in your blanket or eat your hair, Lin.    I had the best case where my friend was sweet enough to text me when he WON!  Voila!  No suspense/no stress!   Sincere thanks to my lovely friend!!  (But the lovely woman was feeling so much stress waiting to hear who the winner was.  )



It's so wonderful to re-watch the scene where Darren's name was announced.  I hope Mia didn't get bruises on her hand (he was clutching it so tight).  I thought he was gonna sit there in his seat in the audience for a minute because he looked so surprised.  Good thing Mia pulled him up!   It's so sweet to see both Judith and Ricky jump up with their arms raised!  I also loved seeing Penelope's smiling face when the camera turned to her in the audience.  This cast is so supportive of each other!

This week also has been personally very busy, not to mention that a lot of big news has hit the world this week.  I was meaning to take more time to post today, but just ran out of time.  Sorry!

Good interview.  They are both are so articulate.  I like Edgar's hair. 

On the red carpet at the Television Academy Performer Peer Group event at NeueHouse Hollywood, Darren Criss tells Access guest correspondent Mike Catherwood about receiving an Emmy nomination for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.” And, Edgar Ramirez dishes on playing the late Versace. Then, the two tell Mike about how they kept things light between takes while filming the FX show.
