darrencriss Just another dude with freshly painted nails pensively sitting on an old Cadillac with a license plate that’s misspelled the word ‘sausage.’ I know it’s overdone, but I was going for something classic.

Another one who arrived way more impeccable than they needed to. Not that we’re complaining. We get tired of blue business suits on the red carpet, but we can’t deny he looks pretty great here.

Stephen Schwartz's 70th Birthday Celebration (April 23, 2018) NYC

lauraosnes: Pinch me, please. Happy Birthday, Mr. Stephen Schwartz! [camera emoji] @nathanjohnsonny

buddybroadway: Stephen Schwartz celebrates his 70th birthday, where proceeds from the evening benefitted DGF. Singers and Songwriters took turns to pay tribute to Stephen with songs and speeches. The most touching moment was when Judith Clurman’s Essential Voices USA and Manhattan School of Music performed “Testimony” which brought tears to my eyes. Pasek and Paul shared a story when Paul met Stephen in college and handed him a CD, not expecting to hear from him again. 6 months later, they received an 11 pages critique from Stephen. Wow! The evening was filled with amazing stories like that. Stephen’s advise, “Tell the Truth, and make it rhyme.” With new works in the horizon, there is no slowing down. Many happy returns Stephen!

TSG:  Mia and Darren's Piano Bar (Los Angeles)

From Darren Criss Army:

Nice feature story on Mia and Darren's piano bar.  All photographs in the article are by Stephanie Breijo.
Time Out wrote:
Darren Criss opened a piano bar with his fiancée and it’s called Tramp Stamp Granny’s. Yes, really.

April 26, 2018

You hear a lot of sounds around Hollywood Boulevard, but a room full of people wailing showtunes at the tops of their lungs isn’t typically one of them—or, we should say, it wasn’t until earlier this month, but it seems right at home now that it’s here. Landing at the intersection of Cahuenga Boulevard with all the gusto and confidence you’d expect from a piano bar covered in pink glitter, cheeky signage and tattooed mannequins, Tramp Stamp Granny’s is such a Hollywood bar it’s a wonder that it hasn’t been here for decades.

There’s chic Art Deco décor mixed with funky vintage furniture, a selfie-ready hall of mirrors, two velvet VIP booths, a thoughtful cocktail menu littered with flirty drink names, rainbow popcorn, and a bar open all night, every night, plus ample and photogenic neon—“cocktails & dreams”—which are all draws in and of themselves. There’s also the name, an ode to the first generation of grannies with tramp stamps.

But perhaps the most obvious draw is that it’s a bar owned and fronted by Darren Criss, one of Glee’s biggest breakout stars—though you may recognize him as the lead in Broadway’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch or, more recently, the sociopathic killer on The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. And most nights, you’ll catch Criss playing the piano and leading you in song.

Owners Mia Swier, Darren Criss and Danny Massare in the mirror hall—careful, those are two-way glass and yes, the guests in the VIP lounges are watching your selfie.  Photograph: Stephanie Breijo

“There’s a great white space for it, because a lot of the folks we love here are New York transplants or theater people or just fun-loving L.A. artist types,” he says. “Singing by the piano is either something you love, or something you didn’t realize you love and just never had access to it.”

It’s the first bar owned by Criss, who launched Tramp Stamp Granny’s with his fiancée, Mia Swier. Swier is no stranger to the industry; her family founded multiple music venues and bars, notably the Moroccan Lounge and Teragram Ballroom here in L.A., and Bowery Ballroom and Mercury Lounge in New York. She’s also no stranger to the stage, having founded an all-female Guns N’ Roses cover band, Guns N’ Hoses, among other groups—you may see her sing, too, but the pair are really hoping the voices you’ll hear are your own. Tramp Stamp Granny’s format takes its cues from NYC Broadway-bar institution Marie’s Crisis, where a pianist takes requests—mostly showtunes—and the whole room sings along, and less so from L.A.’s other piano bars, which are heavy on jazz nights and feel more like musical performances than opportunities to communally belt it out. The third owner, Danny Massare, helped found Alchemy Health Food and has a band of his own—Kings of Neon—though you’re more likely to catch him running the operations than taking the mic.

. . .

“A lot of our staff are musicians and performers in their own way, and we allow the creativity to flow here,” says Massare. “We have a bartender who’s got an amazing voice and she’ll sing, some of our servers sing, we have door hosts that come in and do little burlesque dances; it’s a very interactive experience for everyone who comes in here, from our staff to our customers. Everyone’s involved. We sort of let the night happen.”

Photograph:  Stephanie Breijo

In fact, you’ll probably see burlesque regularly; the trio’s still hammering out weekly programing, but expect “queer cabaret” nights, launching April 30, which will feature drag performances and burlesque curated and hosted by local queen Anita Procedure. And while the piano bar plays much more than Broadway hits, if that’s what you’re looking for, your best bet is to drop by on weekends, when showtunes are the focus.

. . .

Tramp Stamp Granny’s: Your New Weekend Hangout

April 30, 2018

I can honestly say I’ve never used the words “tramp stamp” and “granny” in the same sentence, so of course I had to check out LA’s newest piano bar, Tramp Stamp Granny’s, to see if it lived up to the name. Located in the heart of Hollywood’s Cahuenga Strip, Tramp Stamp Granny’s ironically took the place of Grandpa Johnson’s Cocktail Club, which closed unexpectedly last year. The love child of co-owners Darren Criss and fiancée Mia Swier, Tramp Stamp Granny’s pays tribute to L.A.’s past with a modern twist.

Long before portraying Toby Phillips in “Little White Lie” and his breakout role as the openly gay Blaine Anderson on Fox’s musical hit “Glee,” Criss played piano at the Grove’s Maggiano’s restaurant to make ends meet. Criss (and his abs) were all over the blogs during the first weekend of Coachella, but during Tramp Stamp Granny’s opening week, Criss himself was a regular on the piano. If you didn’t get a chance to hear him play, don’t worry. Chances are you’ll get the opportunity again. I walked (yes, walked) to the piano bar on a Sunday night, passing well known watering holes like The Room Hollywood, Velvet Margarita, and the Attic along the way. When I got to Tramp Stamp Granny’s and realized I’d have to walk through a red curtain to get inside, I knew I was in for a treat.

The most important part of a piano bar (besides the cocktail list, which I’ll get to later) is the music, and Sunday night’s piano player didn’t disappoint with his impeccable song selection. Known to the bartenders simply as Mike, he performed his rendition of songs like “Wonderwall” by Oasis and Elton John’s classic “Tiny Dancer” – the kinds of songs you’d sing along to even if you’re sober, but definitely when you’re drunk. The acoustics were perfectly balanced. I was pleased at the simple fact that I could easily hold a conversation while still enjoying great music. Mike took a break from his set and suddenly I was listening to Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” followed immediately by Go West’s classic “King of Wishful Thinking.” The former song got one brave patron out of his seat and on the dancefloor, channeling his inner Chevy Chase. (If you’ve seen the music video, you’ll get it.) Even if you happen to miss the piano player, the music overall is just what you’d want from a place like Tramp Stamp Granny’s: A throwback to New York-style sing-along hubs like “Rose’s Turn” and “Pieces.”

Tramp Stamp Granny’s is a small space with a lot to take in. The piano is the main attraction and the fact that you can sit right around it only adds to the sense of intimacy. From the brass fixtures to the hardwood, chevron-printed floors and the contemporary art hung tastefully on the walls, each detail feels carefully thought out. Whether you’re lounging in the red velvet chairs or standing by the marble top bar, Tramp Stamp Granny’s is a vibe. It’s a “Great Gatsby” meets “Cocktail” vibe – the kind of vibe I didn’t even realize my soul needed until I walked through that red curtain. It’s a uniquely inviting atmosphere that’s sadly missing from many bars and nightclubs throughout Hollywood.

In addition to great music, Tramp Stamp Granny’s offers a full bar and interesting cocktail list complete with names like Great Rac, Boob Soup, Actress/ Waitress/ Mattress, Pierced Nipple, and their signature, the Tramp. You can order spirit shots like Matcha Vodka, Basil Vodka, Truffle Bourbon, and my favorite, Bacon Bourbon. They’ve got PBR and Pale Ale on tap, and for the non- drinkers, there’s Kombucha on tap (or in my case, diet coke.)  The bartenders are friendly and know how to make a proper drink, which is essential to any bar, especially in Hollywood.

A few minutes before I had to call it a night, Mike came back to the piano and said a few words before he began his second set. He said that when you come to Tramp Stamp Granny’s, you can always expect “…great people, great staff, great family.” Los Angeles is a big city and a bar that makes you feel welcome and at home is priceless. Tramp Stamp Granny’s is just that kind of bar.

Aw, nice message from Darren.  :happy face

darrencriss: So grateful to @dolcegabbana for including me at their table at the #MetGala. This Alta Sartorial jacket is a hand stitched, sequined replica of a mosaic inside the Duomo di Monreale in Palermo- a cathedral whose design influences were a combination of Norman-French, Byzantine and Arab styles; in other words, a combination of diverse, equally rich traditions that created something new and more majestic than the sum of their parts. Needless to say, it was an honor to represent that kind of cultural fusion on the red carpet. My one regret was not sneaking a photo of how incredible everyone looked at our table, if I may say so myself! I guess that image will just have to live on in my memory bank… along with many other great moments from a very special night. Thank you, D&G!

Darren sounds pretty good in his rapping.  :happy face  I watched some of the previous "battles" on Youtube and some of the folks get a bit mean.  I'm glad Darren and Gaten are pals and are nice.

I was bored and was scrolling through the YouTube comments and one person said,

Basically Sideswipe vs. Dustin.

It brought a smile to my face that this person associated Darren with Sideswipe of Transformers, Robots in Disguise.  Like Lin and I were chatting about a while ago, it's so interesting how because of Darren's diverse career, some people associate him with StarKid, some with Glee, some with Hedwig, some with ACS Versace, and most adorably, some with the animated Transformers, Robots in Disguise.  :happy face

I showed to my husband, the 1 minute video of Gaten and Darren in their rapping battle, and he was laughing several times.    He watched a bit of the other rapping battles on YouTube and he didn't find them funny.  He thought some of the other folks were too mean to each other (in the other rapping battles).
