Not any detailed reviews, but some nice media coverage and photo galleries:

This is a light, fun piece, with really nice pics.  I only am including an excerpt.
NewYork.com wrote:11 Elsie Fest Moments That Fulfilled Our #BroadwayGoals

Last summer, Broadway alumnus and Glee heartthrob, Darren Criss, created a concert festival geared towards lovers of Broadway and the theater — he called it Elsie Fest. Fans flocked to buy tickets for Tony Award-worthy performances from the likes of Laura Osnes, Aaron Tveit and Darren Criss himself.

On September 5, the Elsie fandom reunited for the second installment of what has become an annual musical theater gathering, featuring stars from across the Broadway spectrum. (Think: Darren Criss, Corey Cott, Tituss Burgess, Megan Hilty, Lena Hall.) Named for a line in the song “Cabaret” from the musical of the same name, this festival paid tribute to its updated location at the Ford Amphitheater on the Coney Island Boardwalk by assuming a larger title — The Great Elsie Fest Musical Extravaganza

This year, NewYork.com captured 11 Elsie Fest moments that tore our fangirl hearts in two and imbued us with pure excitement and glee. (See what I did there?)

Darren Criss wore sunglasses in the dark. So now I wear sunglasses in the dark.

Elsie Fest 2016 Highlights

elsiefest2016 - Elsie Fest 2016 - Page 4 Elsiefest-1024x579

Elsie Fest celebrated its second year last night at the Ford Amphitheater on Coney Island and it was pure magic, to say the least. Co-creator and producer Darren Criss brought audiences to their feet with his unexpected choice for last song – Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. A rock song at a musical theatre festival wasn’t the only highlight of the night. Here are our top 6 favorite moments of the night!

Darren Criss sings a duet with Liz Callaway.

During his set, Criss began to sing “Journey to the Past” from the 1997 film Anastasia. He then proceeded to tell the audience that his voice isn’t high enough for the song and introduces Liz Callaway, the voice of Anastasia. Audiences went absolutely wild. Talk about blast from the past for all the ’90s kids!

[. . . ]

If you missed this year’s Elsie Fest, don’t stress! Nothing is confirmed yet but we’re sure Criss is already planning next year’s festival and it will be just as incredible.

Who’s going with us next year?

A couple of comments from BroadwayWorld message board.
Drama Teach wrote:

Here's my review of the day:

Megan Hilty:  Reliable performer who consistently knocks it out of the park.  Why is she not a bigger star?  She is a true belter who plays up the "blonde" shtick, and it works for her.  Saw her with the Pops recently, and it was pretty much the same thing.  I'm a fan.

Titus Burgess:  Way more versatile than I expected.  His voice is straight out of the church, but he did a rendition of "Summertime" that was jazzy and smooth and a powerful version of "What's Goin' On" after urging everyone to vote.

"Stranger Things" boys:  Not a whole lot to report.  They came out and did "Fugue for Tinhorns" with Darren Criss and then each did their own numbers with their sisters.  It was cute for what it was, and the boys have nice voices.

Corey Cott:  Adorable and goofy when speaking, but when he sings, he exudes confidence.  Of course "Santa Fe" was great, but he did "One Song" from Rent, and I think that was personal favorite.

Julie James:  She has a nice voice, but she attempted to scat in her soprano, and it was a very bad decision. I like her, but her constant peppiness is a bit much and we know by the fifth time she mentions it that she is on Sirius; no need to state it another five times.

Todrick Hall:  Bizarre going from Julie James to Todrick.  I had never heard him until tonight, and I'm sold.  It was high energy, fun songs, and a beautiful romantic duet with Darren Criss.  Won me over.

Rebel and a Basketcase:  Oy.  This lasted way longer than it should have.  I understand that they're Darren's friends and he wanted to have an eclectic group of performers, but at a musical theater festival, there should be musical theater songs performed.  I'm fine if you want to mix in one or two of your own, but their entire set was their own alternative indie rock music.  And it didn't end.  I actually didn't hate the music, but this was entirely out of place and tedious.

Pasek and Paul:  This was the highlight of the night for me.  They sang some of their own songs and brought out Lindsay Mendez and Cynthia Erivo for some of the others.  I cannot wait for Dear Evan Hansen, especially after hearing Pasek sing "Waving Through the Window" and Cynthia Erivo singing the act I closer.  Their music is so melodic.

Jason Robert Brown:  Well, he seems like an interesting one.  Clearly a fan of himself.  The man is talented, so I get it.  He sang a bunch of the songs including "Moving Too Fast," "I Love Betsy" and "It All Fades Away."  Cynthia Erivo came out to do one from Last 5 Years also.

Lena Hall:  Similar to Rebel and a Basketcase (although not to the same extent), she and her band sang lots of their own rock tunes.  She did a couple of radio-friendly songs including "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" and of course sang "Origin of Love."  The girl's voice is sick, but way too much rock for me.

Darren Criss:  He is so enthusiastic about musical theater and it's infectious.  Liz Callaway came out to sing "Journey to the Past" with him, and he sang a bunch of other great ones including "Cabaret" (couldn't pass up the "Elsie" lyric nod).  Have to hand it to him for putting a wonderful day together.

Overall, the day was lots of fun.  There were some great performances at the piano in between sets including Laura Osnes and little Alison from Fun Home doing "Ring of Keys."  The place was easy to get to and the seats were fine.  Food and bathrooms didn't have long lines either.  I'd go again next year.

A really cute, lovely video of Todrick and Darren rehearsing:

Darren Criss  One of my favorite moments of Elsie Fest 2016 was actually a last minute rehearsal in a stairwell on the way to the stage with this amazing singer-songwriter… Todrick Hall, thanks for letting me join ya on this beautiful tune.

Nice story from a photographer who was assigned to cover Elsie Fest.

Debra L. Rothenberg Photography: There are some days that I wish I said “no” to a photo assignment. Today started as one of those days. I wanted to stay home in the morning and spend it with my husband and the boys, and spend with afternoon with 2 friends- one I haven’t seen in what feels like a bazillion years since she moved to the other coast.
My assignment was the Elsie Festival in Coney Island- a whole day of singers and I only heard of one- Darren Criss from Glee.
These are days that surprise me and I ended up having an amazing time. The talent was thru the roof today. There were “holy sh*t” moments constantly.
And as i was leaving, I got to see Coney Island In all its glory with the sun setting on the boardwalk.
I lived at the jersey shore for 17 years and Asbury park feels like a second home but I have to admit- there is something about Coney Island that makes me happy and makes me feel good.

BWW Exclusive: A First Hand Account of Elsie Fest 2016!

The second annual Elsie Fest, a one-day outdoor music festival celebrating stars and songs from the stage and screen, took place yesterday, Monday, September 5th at the Ford Amphitheater at the Coney Island Boardwalk.

As a long time lover of both show tunes and festivals, I made sure I was able to make it out to Coney Island to experience the festival first hand, not only as member of BroadwayWorld, but as a fan.

So, for those of you who couldn't make it, here's my first hand experience on this year's Elsie Fest, from a perspective of a fellow Broadway Fan. Check it out, below!

Before we start things off, I have to say that this year's festival was definitely an improvement from last year's, and I'm not even talking about the musical acts. First thing's first, there were actual chairs to sit in. That might sound like a sort of nit-picky thing to say, but last year your choices were either standing or sitting on hard concrete, which made the many hours go by a lot slower and put a damper on the experience, especially since you couldn't leave the venue. If you wanted a seat, you had to pay VIP prices, and as a senior in college, I didn't have that money to spend. This year, every section came with a seat, an area to walk around and a roof on top of our heads.

Plus, the whole food situation from last year where the vendors actually ran out of food wasn't even an issue this year. Sure, I would have personally appreciated more drink options and the prices were a bit steep, but what could you say? It was a concert venue.

[. . . ]

Now, onto some highlights of the festival's performances.

All of the photos are by Vladislav Grach, and can be found on the Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk's Facebook page.

[ . . . ]

Darren Criss, one of the creators behind the festival, ended the night on a high note. What can i say? The just man emits so much charm, and each audience remember gladly eats it up. His set was the most diverse of the bunch, and that, combined with high high energy performance style, really brought the house down. Ending a Broadway festival on Nirvana's "Smell's like Teen Spirit" is something only he could pull off.

elsiefest2016 - Elsie Fest 2016 - Page 4 14212800_324667854547286_1869329094931576487_n

Though I didn't name every single act that performed throughout, they were all still amazing. Truly no one delivered a bad set, but these were just my personal favorites, and what I remembered the most after a long day of performances.

Overall, the day was truly a blast, and I will definitely be buying my ticket come this time next year, especially if they end up at the same venue again.

Note:  It sounds like the BroadwayWorld writer liked the new venue.  I wonder if people were allowed to come and go?  I thought I saw that someone had posted a pic of their hand stamped.   That is a nice option for the fans.

I like that the writer knew that Darren was a Disney prince in The Little Mermaid at The Hollywood Bowl.  :happy face

The Stranger Things Kids Sang Disney & Showtunes with IRL Disney Prince Darren Criss

For those of you new here, Glee’s Darren Criss is a Broadway treasure. After starring in a couple shows himself, with the help of Ricky Rollins and Jordan Roth the musician has been spreading the Broadway love with Elsie Fest. The outdoor festival that brings the entire theatre world — and them some — together for one day in holy showtune-mony in New York’s Coney Island.

This Monday, Darren rounded up some of theatre’s greatest —  Megan Hilty, Todrick Hall, Titus Burgess etc — and even enlisted the help of our favourite kids to REALLY kick it up a notch this year. That’s right, things got anything but strange when a couple of the Stranger Things boys —  Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas) and Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) — hopped on stage to remind us that they, like criss, have serious Broadway roots.

Glee star Darren Criss, who created the event, was joined by Tony-nominated actress Megan Hilty, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Tituss Burgess, Hedwig and the Angry Inch’s Lena Hall, Newsies star Corey Cott, RuPaul’s All Stars Drag Race judge and upcoming star of Kinky Boots Todrick Hall, Stranger Things standouts Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin, and more for

In addition to the celebration of the stars’ favorite show tunes, attendees at the Ford Amphitheater were also treated to exclusive meet-and-greets with the stars of the show.

Nice video by Playbill.   The crowd looks large.  applause  Darren talks about loving the diversity of music and performers, from Todrick twerking on stage ( :big grin) to Jason Robert Brown, the composer, performing his songs.   Tituss talks about the joy of communing with other musical theater nerds, and Megan talks about how Elsie is the start of something big.

The second annual Elsie Fest featured Darren Criss, Lena Hall, Megan Hilty, Tituss Burgess, Jason Robert Brown, Corey Cott, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul and a special guest performance by Color Purple Tony winner Cynthia Erivo.

The day-long outing celebrating show tunes is modeled on the popular Coachella Festival and was the brainchild of Criss, talent manager Ricky Rollins and Broadway producer/Jujamcyn Theaters president Jordan Roth. In this highlight reel of the event (held at Coney Island’s Ford Amphitheater) Criss, Hilty and Burgess give a rundown of the festivities. | Playbill.com

A really detailed, thoughtful review by a fan.   It's a very interesting read.   This fan seems to know a lot about the geographic area as well, so offers some views about the venue and transportation to the venue.   Her views about the date (Labor Day) in relation to the location and transportation to that location also are insightful.  I was wondering if being during the Labor Day holiday was not the best date, because I wondered how many New Yorkers left to go out of town for the holiday.

Elsie Fest 2016 Fan Review

I think I’m still recovering from the overall greatness that was Elsie Fest 2016. Just like any event you spend nine hours at, there are both fabulous and weird moments, but in this case, fabulous wins!  Kudos to Darren, Ricky and their team for creating an amazing afternoon and evening of music and fun times. I’ll start off with the performances, and then end with some comments about the venue and logistics. I did not attend last year’s Fest, so I can’t offer comparisons.

Elsie Fest definitely had something for everyone.  I loved the idea of not being familiar with every performer.  It was a chance to get to know and admire people who were new to me. I had never seen Corey Cott, or Julie James, or Rebel and a Basketcase, or Jason Robert Brown.  Not even on YouTube!

Corey Cott
officially welcomed the crowd, bouncing on stage, excited and more than ready to get the audience pumped up for what was to come.

It didn’t take long to figure out this was not your mother’s (or grandmother’s) Broadway Festival, even though Megan Hilty started things off by performing wonderful renditions of Broadway tunes like “Suddenly Seymour” from Little Shop of Horrors and “Popular” from The Wiz, as well as songs from her TV show Smash like “They Just Keep Moving the Line,” “Second Hand White Baby Grand” and “Don’t Forget Me.”

Tituss Burgess
was hugely entertaining.  His set included a lovely version of “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess and a campy version of “Poor Unfortunate Souls” from The Little Mermaid. I loved his version of Bette Midler’s “Do You Want to Dance?” and his interpretation  of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin’ On.” Tituss also gave an impassioned speech that urged the audience to be sure to vote (and get their families to vote) in the upcoming U.S. election.

Caleb McLaughlin
and Gaten Matarazzo from Stranger Things were next, which brought Darren on stage for the first time. Both of these teens are talented, but I really couldn’t take my eyes off of Caleb, he’s definitely someone to watch for in the future! They sang Fugue for Tinhorns from Guys and Dolls with Darren, and Gaten sang “Lay Me Down” as a duet with his sister. Then Darren joined Caleb and his sister for “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King,” which Caleb sang as young Simba in the Broadway production of The Lion King. Their set was a lot of fun.

Corey Cott
performed his set with an energy and intensity that reminded me of Darren.  You could tell he was nervous when he stopped to speak between songs, but he had a beautiful singing voice and it felt like the entire crowd was enjoying his performance, although it was definitely a surprise when he opened with the Pokemon theme!   He continued with a jazzed-up version of “If I Were a Rich Man” from Fiddler on the Roof, complete with a brass section and back up singers. Everyone seemed to love what he did with Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar, Titanium by Sia, and Sorry by Justin Bieber.  He ended with Santa Fe from his own show, Newsies and received a big ovation from the audience. Corey Cott’s complete set is here

Julie James
was one of only two performers who simply weren’t faves.  She had a very powerful operatic voice.  I’m not sure if there was some issue with the sound system that couldn’t modulate her volume better, or maybe her voice sounded a bit shrill because of where I was sitting (in the front) but my friend and I used her set as an opportunity to take a break. My apologies, Julie.

In between sets, Marie’s Crisis Beer Garden, set up in the rear of the Amphitheater, took over, with guest singers (including Laura Osnes!) and sing-alongs, including a rousing rendition of “One More Day” from Les Miserables.

After Darren, the performer who I was most looking forward to seeing was Todrick Hall, and he did not disappoint! The man is a force to be reckoned with.  He’s so talented; singer, songwriter, choreographer, and actor.  He just commanded the stage, and brought a fabulous group of dancers with him, who looked like they were having as much fun as he was! Todrick performed some of his own music as well as covers. The highlight had to be his duet with Darren on his own song, Color, from Straight Out of Oz. Here’s the video. Todrick also did an incredible job dueting on a Disney medly with a female vocalist whose name I didn’t catch. I definitely need to see him in Kinky Boots on Broadway!

Next up was Rebel and a Basketcase.  My friend referred to their music as Euro-pop.  Evan Rachel Wood has a beautiful voice, but they were not a fave of mine. Admittedly, that’s probably a minority opinion, because she and her musical partner, Zach Villa, were clearly popular with many in the audience. There was some sort of communication issue between the stage manager and performers, because we saw the stage manager trying to signal them from the wings. When that failed, he came around to the pit in front of the stage, and signaled them from there.  A bit later, at the end of their song, an announcer said “Let’s give it up for Rebel and a Basketcase,” as if they had just sung their final number.  But then, they did one more.  So not sure what was going on there.

Darren came on stage to introduce fellow U of Michigan alums Pasek and Paul. They performed several numbers from their shows, with Benj Pasek, who has a lovely voice, doing the vocals. But it was even more fun when they brought out soloists to interpret their music. First up was Lindsay Mendez, who sang “Pretty Funny” from Dogfight. Then Cynthia Erivo came out to sing “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen, and she just crushed it!  Backed by a chorus from Pace University, she was a whole ‘nother level of excellence. She had such a powerful voice and an electric stage presence (it was hard to take your eyes off her, she was that compelling a performer) that even if you had never seen her on stage before, you just knew she was a star.  Clearly, this year’s Tony Awards knew that too, since she won Lead Actress in a Musical for her performance in A Color Purple.

Pasek and Paul were followed by another composer/song writer, Jason Robert Brown, who is known for the musicals The Last Five Years as well as The Bridges of Madison County.  It was fun to hear the definitive version of “I Love Betsy” from the composer himself, especially since I had heard Darren’s version of it when he was part of the Broadway Today tour with Betsy Wolfe earlier this year.  The highlight of Jason’s set was when Cynthia Erivo returned, without the chorus this time, to sing “I Can Do Better Than That,” from The Last Five Years. It was just an incredible performance, and she rightly received her second standing ovation of the evening. Jason announced that he is presenting a concert version of The Last Five Years on Monday, September 12 at NYC’s Town Hall, featuring Cynthia and Joshua Henry (he will have the lead in the Chicago touring production of Hamilton), as a fund raiser on behalf of the James Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. In support of that effort, Jason sang “A Song About Your Gun,” which he wrote in April in response to the murders at Pulse in Orlando.

The minute Lena Hall took the stage with her band, wearing a pair of sparkling jeans tucked into high boots, a Ramones tee shirt and a harness-style pair of suspenders, we knew she was going to rock the place, and she did.  After singing “The Origin of Love” from Hedwig, she continued with a high-energy set with the band members happily nodding their heads and exchanging smiles.

Finally, it was time for Darren to perform, with a great band backing him.  His set was the most eclectic, and he was in great voice throughout. He opened with “Tear Me Down,” from Hedwig, followed by “Cabaret.” His rendition of “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” which he said was a favorite of his but he had never performed it live, was full of emotion and longing.  He pretty much owns “Teenage Dream,” and played the version we first heard on his 2013 Listen Up Tour.  His duet with Liz Callaway on “Journey to the Past” from Anastasia was beautiful.  The dancers (and the sunglasses!) came out during “Drive It Like You Stole It,” and he harmonized beautifully with Evan Rachel Wood on “Across the Universe.”  Singing “New York State of Mind” was a perfect choice given the Fest’s location.  Then he announced the final song of the evening, chosen, he said, because of his and Ricky Rollins’ love of 90s music. After telling the crowd that Ricky would play the drums, he said, “What’s the fun of throwing a musical theater fest if you can’t actually do whatever you want…  I’m gonna rock the F out right now!”  And he did, with Ricky sporting the biggest grin on his face, while everyone stood up, amazed, happy and rocking to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” He gave 110% (doesn’t he always) danced all over the stage during the final chorus, and left everyone satisfied.  As Darren said good night to the crowd, he added “and that’s how hard musical theatre can rock.” Damn, Darren!

Jenndesq’s video playlist includes all of Darren’s songs as well as songs from some of the other performers Enjoy them!

My only question is, whatever happened to the duet (or trio) that Darren, Lena and Tituss teased about on Twitter a month ago??  It would have been so much fun to see!

About the venue…

Everyone (including me!) was so worried about Hurricane Hermine. But by Sunday afternoon, the storm had shifted far enough into the Atlantic to send clear weather to the metro-New York City area for Monday. We had been worried about rain, flooding and high winds.  Instead, we were thrilled to have no rain at all, partly cloudy skies and pleasant breezes. The beaches remained closed for swimming, due to the rip currents.  We could see the waves crashing against the sea walls and the shoreline, spraying high into the air.

But the worry about Hurricane Hermine proved to be a blessing in disguise, because very few people bothered to come to the Boardwalk and the beach, reducing traffic on the roads and leaving the parking lots open for those Elsie Fest ticket holders who drove. The roads to Coney Island are normally jammed on Labor Day.  If the Ford Amphitheater is used for next year’s Fest, and it’s a summer weekend with decent weather for the beach, driving there is going to be very problematic. There are several subway lines with stops within a few blocks of the Boardwalk, but in better beach weather, the subways get very crowded, too. I also hope Elsie Fest isn’t on Labor Day again… there are lots of reasons why many people can’t travel to New York City for a full day event on Labor Day.

The Ford Amphitheater was right on the Boardwalk, and it’s a very attractive facility. The seats were comfortable (upholstered in the front half of the theater) although there are rows of backless contoured seats in the rear section. But, no standing!  Everyone gets a seat.  The roof appears to be made of some kind of fabric that is stretched and anchored, and the sides can be open to the air or closed.  The acoustics were good, and the space was bright and well lit. When we were there, one side was closed and the other open, allowing a nice breeze to come through that kept us comfortable, since there was no air conditioning. The aisles were wide and the sight lines were good.  The amphitheater is gently pitched towards the stage, with steps and ramps in the rear going up to the concession area.

The Amphitheater structure is still a work in progress.  There is scaffolding on one side of the building’s exterior, and there are a few areas open to the public that still need some work, like the old toilet stalls in the ladies room on the rooftop (the walls and doors of the stalls look beat up and have old, hook closures), although the sinks appear new. On the plus side, there was rarely a line to get into the main level bathrooms, and there were ample refreshment counters in the back of the amphitheater. The only problem was that not every item on the posted menus was available, and the ones not available were the few healthy choices, like caprese salad and the grilled chicken wrap. My friend and I were disappointed we could not get the healthier foods we would have preferred to have eaten.

The Live Nation staff that served as ushers, ticket takers, and traffic control were friendly, but frequently gave us conflicting instructions.  We were trying to get downstairs from the roof. One staff person directed us to a stairway. When we got there, the staff person at the stairway told us we couldn’t use it. When we returned to the original staff person, she apologized but didn’t have an alternative to give us, other than to take the elevator, which had a line of people waiting to use it.  Although the elevator was large enough to hold a dozen people, the staff limited the maximum number to six, due to some issues with the elevator motor.  Of course, that slowed things down, and the stairs seemed to be off limits.  We all shrugged and smiled, because in the greater scheme of things, it wasn’t important, but the mis-directions kept getting repeated.

But these were minor, minor quibbles.  Honestly, if these were the only concerns, it was more than successful. Elsie Fest 2016 was terrific, with outstanding performances by some very talented artists. I’m so glad I was able to be there.

Lastly, heartfelt thanks to my dear friend the Road Warrior, who contributed to this review, got us front row seats, took fabulous photos, and never says no if Darren’s performing. You’re the best!

I watched this video of Darren meeting and greeting his fans at Elsie Fest.  And he hugged every single one of his fans.  It's something that Darren's fans take for granted, but it's not something that all celebrities do, even at Meet and Greets.  Last year at Elsie Fest, I saw some of the other stars shake hands with fans at their Meet and Greets, which is perfectly fine too (of course!), but Darren just prefers hugs (and his fans are happy with that decision, in fact some of them snuck in an extra hug or two and Darren kindly went along).   At around Point 4:15, there is an especially cute moment, with Darren bear-hugging a fan.   I have a feeling that he knew the fan.   Very sweet.

THEN the performances. WOW. I’m sure we’ve all heard what went down by now and its all true. Each and every single act was just as special as the last. Darren singing my favourite song from SingStreet a total highlight along with One moment that will stick with me. Darren’s closing number, where he introduced Ricky onstage to play drums and they rocked the fuck out to Nirvana! Now THATS how you end a Theatre appreciation festival showcase..WITH SOME FUCKIN’ ROCK n’ ROLL!

In the entire post that she made on her blog, she talked about meeting Chuck, Ricky, Mia and Benj Pasek.

A nice review of Elsie Fest from Emertainment Monthly (Emerson College).  From dailydarrennews

emertainmentmonthly wrote:
Celebrqting the Cabaret of Life at Elsie Fest 2016

What happens when hundreds of passionate theater geeks join together to cheer on some of the best talent Broadway has to offer? One amazing festival celebrating music, movies, TV, and the enthusiasm and willingness to discover something new. This festival, created by Darren Criss– best known for his role as Blaine Anderson on Glee, is called Elsie Fest.

On Labor Day of 2016, the show went on for the second year in a row. This time the venue was the Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island, which accommodated the musical crowd well with seats in every section and a couple vending areas near the front and back of the theater.

[. . . ]

The day kicked off about an hour late because the VIP meet and greets were taking longer than anticipated, but that fact alone is pretty telling about the kind of people running and performing in the festival; each wanting and willing to take the time to connect with their fans before the show.

[. . . ]

Throughout the lineup, Criss would pop up to introduce an act or join in for a song. A huge Stranger Things fan, Criss asked two of the show’s stars Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo to join in the fun with a set of their own, each boy a Broadway performer in his own right (McLaughlin from The Lion King and Matarazzo from Les Miserables). They delighted the crowd with their talent and charm.

Criss also joined Todrick Hall for one of the less dance-filled numbers in his upbeat set. The two sang Hall’s song “Color” which they had quickly rehearsed in the stairwell beforehand, not that anyone could tell with how beautifully they sounded.

Criss brought the night to a close with a set that blew the crowd away. Personal highlights would be the performance of “Journey to the Past” from Anastasia with Liz Calloway, the original singing voice of Anya, and Criss’ performance of “Drive it Like You Stole it” which encouraged the crowd to see John Carney’s amazing movie, Sing Street. Criss clearly is an enthusiastic fanboy who wants to spread the word about some of the people and media he loves most.

It would be easy to go on and on about all the performances at this years Elsie Fest, but luckily there will be plenty of recordings for people to watch and hear the immense talent of every performer and even the collective talent of the crowd. A small stage set up in the back of the venue was set up to allow for more talented Broadway stars to lead huge harmonious sing-a-longs between sets. Criss sang “Cabaret” at the start of the final set of Elsie Fest 2016 to remind everyone why the festival got its name in the first place:

“I think of Elsie to this very day.

I’d remember how’d she turn to me and say:

“What good is sitting all alone in your room?

Come hear the music play.

Life is a Cabaret, old chum,

Come to the Cabaret.”

Indeed, Elsie Fest has become the ultimate Cabaret to hear the music play. The theater community is a happier and more connected place because of it.

So, I know I am talking about this a month late, but don't care. LOL. My favorite moments below:

My favorite moment was probably hearing Hopelessly devoted to you. It was a complete suprise to hear him start singing it and I never realized how much I had wanted to hear it live until then. I dare say it was even better than the recording.

Tear Me Down - Darren + guitar = love so this was probably my second favorite and I always love to hear him performing Hedwig songs. They just suit him so well.

Journey to the Past - love that he brought the original Anastasia onstage, another thing I didn't expect

Smells Like Teen Spirit - I don't think he's ever performed this one before? I got a good chuckle of him closing a broadway festival with this

What I love about ElsieFest so far is he's switching up his setlist from the usual, so we get to hear him perform songs we've never heard him do before.
