OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES The Alienist Genius: Picasso The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Godless Patrick Melrose
Will Win: The Emmy voters have been known to get deeply weird, but this feels like it’s going to The Assassination of Gianni Versace almost by default, doesn’t it? Should Win: Luckily, The Assassination of Gianni Versace is the best show in this category by a lot.
[ . . . ]
OUSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES/TV MOVIE Antonio Banderas, Genius Darren Criss,The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose Jeff Daniels, The Looming Tower John Legend, Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert Jesse Plemons, Black Mirror, “USS Callister”
Will Win: With Versace winning easily in Limited Series, you’d think Darren Criss would also be a shoo-in, but then you’d be underestimating the draw of the ‘Batch (who snagged an Emmy in 2014 for Sherlock) and of Jeff Daniels (who won an Emmy for The Newsroom; THE NEWSROOM!). Also? Don’t underestimate the chances of John Legend to snag the award for Best Only One of These Performances I Saw. If he does, that’ll be an EGOT! Still, I say Benedict Cumberbatch takes it.
Should Win:Darren Criss is so, so unsettling and great as Andrew Cunanan. He doesn’t need the award, with all his youth and handsomeness, but he deserves it.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES/TV MOVIE Sara Bareilles, Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert Penelope Cruz, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Judith Light, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Adina Porter, American Horror Story: Cult Merritt Wever, Godless Letitia Wright, Black Mirror, “Black Museum”
Will Win: If you’d asked me a year ago, I’d have told you to start etching Cruz’s name on the nameplate. She’s an Oscar winner for Pete’s sake! Now, though, after having watched the series and the conversation that emerged as it was airing, I’d say she’s in a dead heat with Judith Light. But while Light may be a Tonys magnet, let’s assume Penelope Cruz‘s star power is enough to pull her across the finish line for Versace‘s lone acting win.
Should Win: In a mere two episodes, Judith Light simply gives the better performance. There’s no getting around it.

Dark horse: “Godless” (Netflix)
Scott Frank’s western didn’t get much attention during its initial run, but gained momentum during awards season (12 nominations!), positioning it as a contender. But it will take some serious firepower to dethrone yet another compelling opus from uberproducer Ryan Murphy, who’s mastered the limited series.
BEST ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES/TV MOVIE:
Will win: Darren Criss, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” (FX)
Should win: Benedict Cumberbatch, “Patrick Melrose” (Showtime)
Dark horse: John Legend, “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” (NBC)
Back in 2014, Cumberbatch pulled off an upset, winning the trophy in the category over “Fargo” favorites Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman (perhaps they split the vote?). But in the years since, his “Sherlock” has been passed over for the likes of Riz Ahmed and Courtney B. Vance. Although he’s in contention this time for a different role — a tour de force turn in “Patrick Melrose” — the momentum lies with Darren Criss, whose performance as the serial killer Andrew Cunanan hit notes that far eclipsed his “Glee” days.

LIMITED SERIES
The nominees: "The Alienist" "The Assassination of Gianni Versace" "Genius: Picasso" "Godless" "Patrick Melrose"
Who will win: "The Assassination of Gianni Versace." The Emmys love Ryan Murphy content, and if "the People vs OJ Simpson" is any indication, the second season of "American Crime Story" will sweep the awards this year. And it deserves the win for its unique take on the story of a serial killer that focuses on the victims, not just the monster. Who should win: "Godless." By embracing every cliche about westerns, "Godless" was somehow something truly unique, bolstered by an incredible cast including Michelle Dockery, Jeff Daniels, and Meritt Weaver (all nominees). We also wouldn't be upset if "Patrick Melrose" wins.
[ . . . ]
LEAD ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
The nominees: Antonia Banderas, "Genius: Picasso" Darren Criss, "The Assassination of Gianni Versace" Benedict Cumberbatch, "Patrick Melrose" Jeff Daniels, "The Looming Tower" John Legend, "Jesus Christ Superstar Live" Jesse Plemons, "Black Mirror: USS Callister"
Who will win: Darren Criss. Criss, whose previous credits included Broadway musicals and "Glee," stunned everyone with his gripping and at times nauseating (in a good, acting way) performance as serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Who should win: Darren Criss or Benedict Cumberbatch, who surprised people in a similar way with his wild, committed, and sometimes hilarious performance in the dark but vibrant Showtime miniseries.
[. . . ]
SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
The nominees: Jeff Daniels, "Godless" Brandon Victor Dixon, "Jesus Christ Superstar" Ricky Martin, "Assassination of Gianni Versaci" Edgar Ramirez, "Assassination of Gianni Versace" Finn Whitrock, "Assassination of Gianni Versace" Michael Stuhlbarg, "The Looming Tower" John Leguizamo, "Waco"
Who will win: Jeff Daniels, "Godless." Daniels is an awards-friendly actor and has won Emmys in the past, so he has an advantage. Who should win: Ricky Martin. Martin didn't have much to do, but he put so much into it and is a really, really great actor.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
The nominees: Adina Porter, "American Horror Story: Cult" Letitia Wright, "Black Mirror: Black Museum" Merritt Weaver, "Godless" Sara Bereilles, "Jesus Chris Superstar" Penelope Cruz, "Assassination of Gianni Versace" Judith Light, "Assassination of Gianni Versace"
Who will win: Penelope Cruz. Cruz did some of her best work since "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" as Donatella Versace on the FX series. She brought empathy to a woman who has, for a long time, been the butt of way too many jokes. Who should win: Judith Light. Light got a nomination is this category instead of guest actress despite being in only two episodes. And she deserves it. Her performance as a woman coming to terms with secrets her murdered husband kept from her for decades is a career best.

Antonio Banderas, Genius: Picasso Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose Jeff Daniels, The Looming Tower John Legend, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert Jesse Plemons, U.S.S. Callister (Black Mirror) The Assassination of Gianni Versace didn’t make quite the cultural impact of its American Crime Story predecessor about O.J. Simpson, but Darren Criss’s performance was easy to single out; playing the serial killer Andrew Cunanan as some combination of rejected puppy and bona fide sociopath, Criss was magnetic and terrifying in a way he’d never been before onscreen, a compelling anchor in a series that rambled too far into darkness for some. Given the show’s muted reception, though, Criss might be usurped in the end by some of his competitors, most likely Benedict Cumberbatch (a previous winner for Sherlock) or maybe even __John Legend,__who recently earned EGOT status for producing Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert and might just add another Emmy for his titular performance. But if Emmy voters actually watched Versace, even in part, it seems difficult to look away from what Criss has accomplished.

Directing for a Limited Series
Who Should Win: Ryan Murphy, The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (“The Man Who Would Be Vogue”)
While many folks were underwhelmed by the follow-up to The People v. O.J. Simpson, it was an undeniably beautiful show. Nothing displayed just how gorgeous this show’s mostly coastal scenery could be than the season’s opening sequence, directed by Murphy and brilliantly acted by Darren Criss and Edgar Ramirez.
Seriously, watch these videos. It’s a master class in building tension until the bubble bursts. Starting out the show with the titular assassination and working backwards was a bold move, and one could argue about whether it worked or not. One thing’s for sure though: The first 10 minutes of Versace‘s first episode contained some of the best directing ever featured on the small screen. Supporting Actress, Limited Series or TV Movie
Who Should Win: Judith Light, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Leave it to Judith Light to upstage Penelope freakin’ Cruz on her own show, one in which she was also nominated and wonderful in her own way. But she wasn’t Light, who brought such a sweet exterior masking clear inner turmoil to the long-suffering wife of a clearly gay man who was (spoiler alert but not really because it’s based on a true story) murdered by Andrew Cunanan.
The fact that Light has yet to win an Emmy for her incredible work on Transparent is criminal, so this is a chance for the Television Academy to right that injustice. Light may have had limited screen time on Versace, but she made as big of an impression as any of the series’ big-name stars.
[ . . . ]
Best actor, limited series or TV movie
Who Should Win: Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace
This is most definitely NOT the Darren Criss Glee and Broadway fans have become accustomed to seeing. Criss’ Andrew Cunanan is one of the most unassumingly terrifying characters you’ll ever see in any medium, a man who wants the finer things in life but unwilling to do any of the work required to earn his coveted lifestyle. Versace makes a point to peel back the layers behind Cunanan that led him to assassinate Versace, and Criss makes him just sympathetic enough that you have to wonder if he could’ve been saved. Criss should get the Emmy for showing a range audiences and critics alike had no idea he was capable of portraying.
Best limited series
What Should Win: The Assassination of Gianni Versace
The entire limited series section of this list feels like a Versace ad, but that’s just because Ryan Murphy proved once again how good he is at crafting first seasons of TV shows. It’s why O.J. worked so well, and it’s why Versace was able to tell such a fascinating tale about two very different figures on a fatal collision course with each other.
The performances are impressive from top to bottom (even Ricky Martin!), and visually it’s a gorgeous mix of sparkling vistas and the grimier parts of town where Cunanan hung out, longing for more. It’s a less well-known story than O.J., but that just made for more satisfying twists and turns. There is no question it deserves this award.

Outstanding Limited Series The Alienist The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Genius: Picasso Godless Patrick Melrose Should Win: Godless or Patrick Melrose Will Win: The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
It will be difficult to top The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story; it has the star wattage (Darren Criss, Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez, Ricky Martin), the high production value and centers on a story the whole world was enthralled by. There's no reason to think the frontrunner won't be handsomely rewarded on Emmy night.

This may be Darren Criss' to lose for his chilling performance as Gianni Versace's killer, Andrew Cunanan, in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. The category, however, touts some of the strongest competition, with stars like John Legend, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons, hoping to hear their name called on Monday evening, so it is conceivable that someone like Cumberbatch or even Legend -- who's already completed the rare EGOT -- could steal a win.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie Sara Bareilles, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert Penelope Cruz, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Judith Light, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Adina Porter, American Horror Story: Cult Merritt Wever, Godless Letitia Wright, Black Museum (Black Mirror) Should Win: Penelope Cruz or Judith Light, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Will Win: Merritt Wever, Godless
Remember when Merritt Wever tearfully (and adorably) won her first Emmy in 2013 for Nurse Jackie? Wever is our choice to take home her second career Emmy statuette, this time for her part as Mary Agnes, a widow who is in a relationship with Callie, a former prostitute turned teacher. Penelope Cruz has the cache to win any award, especially one for Donatella Versace in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, and Judith Light turns in a devastatingly heartbreaking performance as the wife of a brutally murdered businessman by Cunanan's hand. While we think Wever has the goods to pull off a win, the ladies of Versace could prove victorious.

Will win: "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story"
While not as popular or socially relevant as "The People v. O.J. Simpson," the second installment of Ryan Murphy's true crime anthology was operatically epic, beautiful and grotesque at once. It has solid competitors in "Patrick Melrose" and "Godless," but Murphy is an Emmy favorite, and "Versace" will easily slide to victory.

In "Versace," Criss makes everyone forget about "Glee" as Andrew Cunanan, who killed designer Gianni Versace and four other men in 1997. In "Melrose," Cumberbatch takes us through the life of a deeply damaged man, who was abused in childhood and abused substances as an adult. Cumberbatch does something just a little bit harder than Criss, but Criss has the momentum, the flashier project and the Ryan Murphy machine behind him.

Will win:“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” “Godless” is a gritty, occasionally grisly, feminist Western that was handsomely crafted and well-acted. But “Assassination” carries the “American Crime Story” brand (plus 18 nominations) and is likely more familiar to voters.

Should win: Benedict Cumberbatch Will win: Darren Criss
First of all, we’ll probably have to go to confession for picking against Jesus, but Cumberbatch reached a new acting peak in playing a troubled addict. On the other hand, voters likely admired how Criss, a former “Glee” star, played against type so convincingly as Versace’s killer.

Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story world has devolved into cringe-worthy camp from time to time, but boy has he proven that he knows how to milk the drama out of real life. Though American Crime Story's second iteration isn't quite as powerful as the first installment focusing on the trial of O.J. Simpson, Darren Criss anchors a case that has recently gone overlooked. Murphy should have no trouble bringing that prize home.

What shows will win, and which should win, at the 2018 Emmys
September 14, 2018
Outstanding Limited Series
Prediction: There’s little in the way of The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story winning here. The last installment of American Crime Story was named Outstanding Limited Series, Ryan Murphy is pretty much the reason this type of show no longer competes against the TV movies, and FX shares custody of this award with HBO (and HBO isn’t here this year).
Preference: Versace is quieter and less splashy than The People V. O.J. Simpson, but it’s still riveting, with Tom Rob Smith’s scripts aiming not to retell the story of Andrew Cunanan’s killing spree (most details of which can never be fully known), but instead using it as a lens to refract an allegory about the societal ills of homophobia and entitlement—a movingly acted tragedy that’s shot in a way that’s as beautiful as any of Versace’s designs. It stands Medusa head and shoulders above the competition.

Outstanding directing for a limited series, movie, or dramatic special
Prediction: Apples, meet orange, meet the cosmic fruit that grows from the evolution of the arm, then chalk up another victory for American Crime Story, thanks to Gianni Versace’s last morning stroll and the operatic flair of Ryan Murphy’s work on “The Man Who Would Be Vogue.”

Plus, the three acting nominations for “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” (the first ever for the recent spate of live musicals) show that they really responded to that show as well. SHOULD WIN: Ryan Murphy is the king of the limited series, and his “Versace” showed us why. Please let it win. It gave us lesser-known aspects of Andrew Cunanan and his victims while reminding us that homophobia and gay self-loathing may have kept the cops from apprehending the killer sooner rather than later. The performances were stunning. I’m in the minority, but I thought it was better than the first season of “American Crime Story,” about O.J. Simpson.

SHOULD WIN: Criss should win for his complex, committed, and chilling performance as a sad, hateful, hate-filled man. Cumberbatch was phenomenal, and hard to look away from, but comparatively one-note. WILL WIN: I think Criss will win, if only for going so much farther than “Glee” would have led us to believe. Picture me shaking my head if Legend, so likable but so very miscast in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” walks away with the prize.

Sooooooooooo happy for Darren! Congratulations Darren! Well deserved! Hurrah for you! And for Ryan for wining Best Directing for a Limited Series ! And for the entire cast, crew, writer, producers, everyone in the ACS Versace family--for winning Best Limited Series! Was it 3 awards tonight?! An amazing night for the ACS Versace family!!
Darren's speech was very lovely, very heartfelt. Well-stated, Darren! I loved his genuine gratitude that he expressed to Ryan for giving him this opportunity. I loved his thank you to his parents and Chuck for their love, and for ingraining in him the importance of hard work, compassion for others, and not taking himself so seriously (code for being resilient and rolling with the punches that life sometimes directs at you). His words about Mia's support and love were so sweet! Lovely speech!
I also loved Ryan's speeches (two tonight!). I loved the way he thanked the women in his life. And for the award for Best Limited Series, I appreciated the important statement Ryan made about homophobia, about how our own country is allowing hatred against others, about bringing awareness to hate violence against LGBTQ persons, and advocating for stronger hate crime laws. Ryan dedicated the award for Best Limited Series to those who are/were victims of hate crimes. Very eloquent, very poignant moment.
I also very much appreciate Rachel Brosnahan's urging those watching the Emmys to please vote.

I was trying not to get my hopes up too high . . . trying to stay cool, trying not to stay glued to the TV set . . . . until my friend texted me!!
Haha, the nomination announcement was at a more convenient time for me, but I couldn't handle watching and waiting, so I set notifications for one of the Darren news accounts and kept busy with something and then when my phone started buzzing for a minute straight, I knew it was safe to go look. But now for this, I was just lying in bed and couldn't fall asleep, so I decided I might as well watch. I think almost chewed a hole into my blanket and maybe probably ate some of my hair, but hearing his name called was worth it.
Lin, you are so smart! What a great idea to arrange to receive notifications from the fan sites! (Unlike me, who was trying to not get too anxious by busying myself at home, planning to record the show and just fast forward until I saw Darren, Ryan, and/or ACS Versace folks appear in the show.)

Awww, I'm glad you didn't chew a hole in your blanket or eat your hair, Lin. I had the best case where my friend was sweet enough to text me when he WON! Voila! No suspense/no stress! Sincere thanks to my lovely friend!! (But the lovely woman was feeling so much stress waiting to hear who the winner was. )
It's so wonderful to re-watch the scene where Darren's name was announced. I hope Mia didn't get bruises on her hand (he was clutching it so tight). I thought he was gonna sit there in his seat in the audience for a minute because he looked so surprised. Good thing Mia pulled him up! It's so sweet to see both Judith and Ricky jump up with their arms raised! I also loved seeing Penelope's smiling face when the camera turned to her in the audience. This cast is so supportive of each other!

Very sweet message.
jonyricker Watching @darrencriss win an #Emmy last night was such a remarkable experience. Through our years of friendship, Darren has, through immensely hard work, incredible talent, sheer determination, and an infectious spirit, achieved this feat. Pictured here, he invited me to the SAG awards with him and we got to see our heroes be recognized for their work. And that was just a little over 5 years ago. Big things can happen in such a small amount of time. Watching my friend reach that goal last night made me proud, nostalgic, overjoyed, and hopeful for the future all at once. Congrats D!! You fuckin earned this one hard!

The Emmy Awards hosted the biggest names in TV and our very own Guillermo was there to get exclusive back-to-back interviews with Emmy winners Henry Winkler, Bill Hader, Darren Criss, Tiffany Haddish, John Mulaney, Rachel Brosnahan, Samira Wiley and Penelope Cruz.
I'm glad that Ryan is beginning to feel accepted. And such nice words about feeling like his child has won.
Vulture wrote: Ryan Murphy Finally Feels Like He’s ‘In the Club’ After His Versace Emmy Win
Sept 18, 2018
At the Emmys Monday night, Ryan Murphy won his second award for directing, and like Sally Field winning her second Oscar, he’s thrilled that the Television Academy likes him right now. “It’s always such an honor to be nominated but I’ve never felt embraced by that peer group — which is obviously all about me and not about them,” Murphy told Vulture at the Fox/FX Emmy party after his win for directing Versace: American Crime Story. “I’ve lost that category five times in a row. I won for Glee but I never felt like I belonged in the club.” He continued, “I always felt I was an outsider but if you look at tonight and you look at Versace and RuPaul and Drag Race and Queer Eye, I feel like the business is much more embracing of all types of people than they were when I was coming up. So I was very moved.” But is this a club he wants to belong to? “Yes, because I feel like everyone I was nominated against is a true artist — David Lynch — and I looked at the directors in all the other categories and I watched all the shows and they’re all great talents. I’m so honored. I was so so shocked — I just can’t even believe that I won.”
In addition to a win for directing a limited series, American Crime Story also won Outstanding Limited Series, and an acting Emmy for its lead Darren Criss. “I would never have done that project without Darren and I offered him that project before we even had a script,” Murphy said. “I’ve been with him a lot since 2009 and I’ve seen his evolution as an artist and a man and I thought he put himself through a lot to play that part … It’s hard for a young male actor to win that category because they usually reward veterans and people who have been around the block, so the fact that the Academy saw him and what he was capable of — it was like my child had won.”
ABS-CBN News wrote: 'One of my favorite things about myself is being half-Filipino': Darren Criss and his roots
Sept 19, 2018
Now, Criss holds the distinction of becoming the first actor with Pinoy roots to win an Emmy -- perhaps the highest honor in TV.
He won for his role in "The Assassination of Gianni Versace" as Andrew Cunanan, the half-Filipino serial killer notorious for murdering five men, including famous fashion designer Gianni Versace, in 1997.
[ . . . ]
. . . On Twitter: "One of my favorite things about myself is that I'm half Filipino. PERIOD."
"I happen to not look like it, but that face is not what I like. I like the fact that most people don't know it's an ace up my sleeve, an ace I'm very proud of, regardless of what I look like."
That love for his Pinoy side shone through when he helped raise funds for survivors of super typhoon Yolanda in 2013. Recently, he also took the time out to send his love for those affected by typhoon Ompong.

By Janet Susan R. Nepales
Los Angeles — Darren Criss, 31, became the first Filipino-American to win an Emmy in the Primetime Lead Actor category in the recently concluded 70th Primetime Emmy Awards held at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
The talented and charming actor/singer/songwriter recently bagged the much-coveted Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Award for his portrayal of the serial killer Andrew Cunanan in the award-winning Ryan Murphy-helmed “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.”
It was a tough category to be in as Darren was in very good company. Other nominees included John Legend (Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert), Antonio Banderas (Genius: Picasso), Benedict Cumberbatch (Patrick Melrose), Jeff Daniels (The Looming Tower), and Jesse Plemons (Black Mirror, USS Callister).
I think Ryan Murphy always had me in mind, which I'm very fortunate to say. I think he said he's always wanted to do this story in some way or another and he brought this up to me before the first series even came out — “The People vs. OJ Simpson.”
[ . . . ]
So he brought it up and he was the one that said he wanted to do it and he wouldn't do it without me, which I appreciated. I had to wait three something years until he did it. The man keeps pretty busy.
[ . . . ]
And there we were. But I was always very, very tantalized by this opportunity and by the story. I can't believe however many years later here we are talking about it. I'm very proud of what we did.
[ . . . ]
Also, I was in a comfortable environment. I was with people that I'd worked with for years on “Glee” or otherwise and it made for a very comfortable, loose atmosphere, which was almost necessary because otherwise you'd just be living in this dreary space for a while.
[ . . . ]
It is not beyond me that this is directly linked to something horrible that really happened and if it wasn't for a lot of this destruction, would I be having this conversation? And the answer is no.
[ . . . ]
The only thing I can do 20 years later, being very helpless, is to try and not exploit this story, not to sensationalize or make a spectacle out of these tragedies, but to tell a story, to sort of raise questions and to get us to think about perspectives we may have missed. That's the only power I really have.
I often think about the people who are still around that. I mean often, it was every day. That was the heaviest weight on my shoulders. I was thinking about not knowing the Versace family, but the lives of the sons and daughters and family members and loved ones of the people that we talk about in our show that I think before the show didn't really have a whole lot of spotlight and in pop culture or society at large in general.
I think about the way something like this would affect them. A hot-topic water-cooler television show and what that must be like for them, wherever they are, to have to deal with this after having trying to cope with it for twenty years.
Like I said, the only thing that I can hope I'm doing is trying to create some kind of light from so much darkness. So yeah, the irony is not beyond me that here I am, almost custom built, just by sheer providence for this role. How do we bring justice to something that is so devoid of justice? And the only answer to that is trying to bring a conversation that can help us understand how these things can happen and how we can avoid it and how we can process a tragedy in terms of how did we get there and how we can avoid it in the future. It is a strange, cruel irony, isn't it?
But again, it's the first time I've ever played anybody that was close to my… it's the first time ever anyone's ever really asked about my ethnicity.
[ . . . ]
And so, if that sheds any positivity towards people who maybe feel more represented, especially when you talk about people like Jon Jon Briones who's from the Philippines that has a wonderful role and does an excellent job.
This is a show that is showing, probably first time in my memory, a really complex Filipino character who was a real person and peers into a real Filipino family’s life. To be able to shed light on that is very exciting. I'm very proud to be part of that.
[ . . . ]
I think I have a need to connect people. I have an insatiable desire to bring people together and to have people share a common ground. That has manifested itself in so many different ways in my life, whether it's just being a general Pied Piper of the party.
I like bringing people that I like together. More recently, we’ll talk about it later, opening a bar with my fiancé.
[ . . .]
I wish I could take more credit, but again, I'm just the pianist. It was her vision and it really does look and feel really beautiful and like the dream that she always had. So we're so proud to share it with people.
The name of the place is “Tramp Stamp Grannies” It's in Hollywood Cahuenga and Hollywood. I think they call it the Cahuenga corner. I think that's the proper name. But yeah, I've feel like I've exhausted my crediting Mia but I really can't praise her enough. Our business partner is this Guy Danny Mazzari, who's sort of the business end and Mia as the creative and I just hit the keys.
On how he sees himself 10 years from now:
[ . . . ]
But the goal I guess would be to, as I was saying before, is to break out into other things and to keep myself and other people off balance. I am a devout fan of the human race. Despite all our flaws, warts and all. I love all the different colors we have in our palette and all the wonderful and terrible things that were capable of and to be able to represent and bring to life all those things to me is the goal. I’m in it for the long game, I'm all about not these quick hits and quick fixes. Everything is connected to each other. So it all has to be a departure from the last thing. And where does that stand in the canvas of all the other colors we painted thus far?
That's the way I look at everything. But my joke I've been saying is because it's so hard to meet something like this because thus far I wouldn't say this is the role of a lifetime because hopefully, you know, there's many more things to come in my lifetime, but as of yet, this certainly has been the project of a lifetime. So much so that I joke that in ten years, I’ll be the forgettable villain in Batman 12 and then everyone's going to go, “Oh God, you know, it's really too bad would happen to that guy” and I’ll be like, “but guys, remember Versace? That was good, right? You like that?” And they're going to be like Darren, that was ten years ago. Get over it, quit living in the past.
So, I don't know, hopefully keep breaking out in new ways in different areas. I fancy myself or my goal is a character person. I enjoy character acting and if I can keep diversifying that portfolio that would be a total goal. Yeah. — LA, GMA News
Inquirer wrote: Darren Criss says win was ‘pretty wild’ at Emmy party
September 21, 2018
“It’s pretty wild!” Darren Criss exclaimed, clutching the gold trophy he received earlier in the evening, when he arrived at the Fox Emmy party at Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles.
Looking sharp in a modern tux by Armani—no, not by Versace—Darren was beaming with pure joy.
Congratulated on making history as the first Filipino-American to win an Emmy lead actor award for his acclaimed portrayal of Andrew Cunanan in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” Darren said, “I feel like the title is much bigger than myself. It’s truly an honor. I’m so happy to be representing so many people who share my background and, there are some Filipino or half-Filipino kids out there who can be encouraged by this and, hopefully, we’ll see them very soon at the Emmys.”
On winning his first major acting award for a role that for the first time hewed to his Fil-Am heritage, Darren said, “I’ve always been so thrilled to be Filipino. It’s truly one of my favorite things about myself. And this is the first time in my professional life that people have been curious or asked about my background. I think that is mainly due to the fact that there haven’t been roles that utilized my background or that lined up with the background that I have.”
“Above all else, I’m just happy that it was a complex role with far more than one side of him (Cunanan). It was a challenge to bring to life somebody who was complex, tragic and very sad. And to be half-Filipino and bring that to life with the ethnic background I have is a real privilege.”
At 31, the second youngest to win the Emmy best actor in a limited series or movie prize (the youngest winner was Anthony Murphy, in 1973), Darren shared what he felt when his name was called at Microsoft Theater: “I’m just so glad that I had so many cast members and colleagues from the show around me. Because this is only worth celebrating if I’m with them.
“If I had been by myself, this would have been a very empty victory. So, it’s nice to be in such a large ensemble. I was thrilled for them because this is a big win for them, as well.”
The former “Glee” star introduced us to his family when they walked in at Vibiana—mom Cerina, dad Charles and brother Chuck. He said he was blessed to grow up with this family. “As I said in my speech, unlike Andrew, I was very fortunate to be raised in an extraordinarily loving home, which is very different from the broken home he came up in. It’s no wonder that it makes quite a difference.
“I really wanted them to be here tonight so that I could thank them, and that they know the way they brought me up is directly connected to being here.”
As for what’s next, the singer-actor-composer said, “I have a lot of loose ends I have to tie up, at least for the remainder of the year.”
[. . . ]
I have some other things, some writing I’m working on that I have to get done next.”
Wonderful pic of two very proud artists! Nice words from Cody Fern (who btw stated on social media that the reason why he didn't attend the Emmy ceremony was because he was working on AHS).
