DEH was #1 on their list (I don't know if you mention that show because you have watched the video after my message).

And, yes, a few more awards for Darren in ACS would be nice. But I'm already glad with the Emmy.

Darren Criss: Today’s the day. I’m very proud of all the hard work our cast & crew put into this, and I’m excited to share it with the world. I’d like to remind viewers that these were very real crimes that destroyed very real people.
My heart goes out - as it did every day going in to work- to the victims and their loved ones, who, 20 years later, still must cope with the tragedies that our series depicts.
My hope is that our show can bring some kind of justice to those whose stories have, until now, lived mostly in the shadows. And my prayer is that with all the darkness we explore, we can create some kind of light- by igniting discussion and encouraging much larger questions about ourselves and the society we live in.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story premieres tonight at 10pm ET on FX.

Thanks for your answer, Jeremy.  I'm happy whenever Darren is happy about being cast in a project.  :happy face  Being connected to more Ryan Murphy projects is good for many reasons, including bringing more visibility for Darren, and getting experience working with such a talented show-runner and director as Ryan is, as well as working with talented cast members.   (Although you know me, I definitely would have a hard time watching him on a show in the horror genre like AHS.  Me-->  too scary scared wha?  I don't have an emoji for screaming in fear.  :amused As it is, my kind husband is going to preview the first few episodes of Versace before I watch, since those are the episodes that Ryan said would contain the most violence.   :big grin )

Lin wrote:He's probably killing some time between scenes. The ACS and AHS sets are right next to each other and I think he's friends with the guy in the middle (he also just went to San Diego this week to see him in a play).

Oh yeah, good point Lin, about Darren being friends with Caleb Foote.

Lin wrote:... not really. First on the call sheet is the lead, but of course we knew he was "a" lead and I don't know how the order is determined if there is more than one. I probably would have guessed Edgar would be first just because he plays the more known figure. So I don't know if it "means" anything in this case. Could be that Darren has the larger role, but for all I know it could be some random factor like who was officially hired first or who speaks first in the first episode... I'm just making these up, I really have no idea. I just thought it was nice to see him listed as #1. Topics tagged under 1 on Darren Criss Fan Community 3129030996

Thanks for your detailed answer, Lin.  I agree, I was expecting Edgar to be the lead, since as you said, Versace is a legend.  I guess we will find out in a few months how central is Darren's character.  But it definitely seems like a positive sign that Darren is listed as number 1 on the Call sheet.  :happy face

Hey Lin, can you explain to me the significance of being the first on a call sheet for a TV show?    Thank you!

And thank you for posting both YouTube videos.  They are much better quality, and it's great that there is a video for those outside the U.S.!   I like how in this promo video, as Cunanan walks through the pool, it appears as if a trail of blood is left in his wake.  And there is the menacing music as Cunanan approaches the dozing Versace.  Darren is so good in terms of how expressive is his body language.  Just the way Cunanan walks up the pool steps to Versace, expresses the movements of a stalking predator approaching his unsuspecting prey, and then Versaces eyes shoot open at the end.   wha?

Yes, I agree, these teasers are so effective!  I agree, I especially like the one with the body/suit bag.   You have had great instincts in the past, Lin!    And it seems you have done your research about the timing of the first trailer for Season 1 of American Crime Story and the timing of Versace promo videos released in sync with AHS episodes.  Cross fingers we get a trailer video soon!

How cool that AHS is dealing (in their own way) with the issue of Trump, Jeremy!

General News You Want to Talk About - Thu Jun 29, 2017 3:45 pm

I'm pasting in this message from Indivisible about 2 Immigration Bills which the Republicans are quietly pushing to a vote TODAY in the House of Representatives.

** URGENT!! TIME SENSITIVE **
** HOUSE WILL VOTE ON THURSDAY 6/29 **
** CALL YOUR REPS: HOUSE TO VOTE ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION BILLS **

Following in the Senate’s footsteps, the House is now bypassing legislative procedure norms to push partisan bills through Congress faster. The bill was recently introduced on 6/22 with no time for amendments.

‘The House will vote THIS THURSDAY on two bills aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration, putting one of President Donald Trump’s signature issues in the spotlight before Congress adjourns for its Fourth of July recess.

#1. H.R. 3003 - NO SANCTUARY FOR CRIMINALS ACT, which would withhold federal law enforcement grants from cities & states that have declared themselves sanctuaries for unauthorized immigrants by not assisting the federal government in enforcing immigration law. As an example, ICE detainers would now be legally honored versus the current policy of only honoring a judicial warrant. Sanctuary jurisdictions would be exposed to lawsuits filed by the victims of crimes committed by unauthorized immigrants after the jurisdiction released them from custody.

#2. H.R. 3004 - KATE’S LAW, which has been a part of Trump’s immigration policy platform since his campaign. Kate’s Law would allow for enhancement of criminal sentences for unauthorized immigrants who repeatedly re-enter the U.S. Punishments would be progressively harsher for unauthorized immigrants who have been convicted of misdemeanors or felonies, based on the severity of their offense.

How to Find Your House Rep

1. Go to one of these links:
http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/
or
https://www.contactingcongress.org/

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members

2. Reisistbot app: Use your texting service and type the number '50409' Type 'Resist' in the text line. The app will ask you a series of questions to determine your members of Congress. It will then prompt you for your message, which will be faxed. Very easy and user friendly!

**

SCRIPT:
Hi, my name is xxx, a constituent in zip code xxx.

I’m urging House member xxx to vote NO on the 2 immigration House bills, HR 3003 No Sanctuary for Criminals Act and HR 3004 Kate’s Law.

These are related to Trump administrations’ crackdown on illegal immigration.

HR 3003 is taking aim at Sanctuary cities themselves, overriding their local detention policies and barring them from receiving Homeland Security and Justice Dept. grants, if they don’t comply.

HR3004 makes it more difficult for defendants to challenge wrongful prior removals and makes no exceptions for asylum seekers.

The US is a nation of immigrants and studies show immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes than those born in the US.

Together these bills would increase prison population as well as the fear level within our communities. Please urge the Congress member xxx to vote NO and much gratitude for the support!

Listen to Darren and Chuck Criss’ new EP: Lost Boys Life. Their band, Computer Games, will perform their first live show tonight in NYC, but you don’t have to wait to hear the new jams!

During a Teen Vogue Instagram live session yesterday the brothers revealed the track listing and described that their process organically lent itself to the 80s dance-vibe of “Every Single Night.” As for the title of another track, “We Like It,” the Criss brothers describe it as an anthem for not explaining why you enjoy the things you do. You just… like it!

Check out Lost Boys Life on Spotify or download the entire EP on iTunes! Tracks include, “We Like It,” “Every Single Night,” “Lost Boys Life,” and “Lost Boys Life (voice memo).”

Entertainment Weekly wrote:
Darren Criss and brother Chuck talk their groovy new music project, Computer Games

March 8, 2017

Topics tagged under 1 on Darren Criss Fan Community Gettyimages-648391858

Darren and Chuck Criss are embracing ’80s and ’90s nostalgia with their new music project: The brothers released their first EP under the name Computer Games Wednesday.

Darren, who got his big break on Glee and can soon be seen on both American Crime Story and The Flash-Supergirl musical crossover episode, and Chuck, a member of band Freelance Whales, officially joined forces for the first time on the Lost Boys Life EP. The result? Four tracks that sound like a funky blast to the past in the spirit of some of the grooviest ’80s superstars like Lionel Richie, Miami Sound Machine, and Peter Gabriel.

Ahead of the EP’s release, EW caught up with the Criss brothers to talk band names, nostalgia, and sibling rivalries (or lack thereof). Read the interview and watch the lyric video for “Every Single Night” below.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So why call yourselves Computer Games?

DARREN CRISS: Chuck and I grew up playing computer games. We weren’t allowed to play video games, so for some reason, computer games were a loophole. Plus, I like the way that it sounds because it’s sort of an all-prevailing concept, where if people are listening to the music, they are playing computer games, just like we’re playing computer games the same way we played Oregon Trail or Sim City 2000 as kids. That’s the same creativity we’re applying to making music on ProTools or Ableton or Logic. Those are our games now, and the music that we make is literally computer games. So there’s that, but also, it happens that the music that we have is nostalgic and reminiscent of our adolescence.

CHUCK CRISS: It just sounds fun, and the way we interact on our phones, everything is a game now with your computer in certain ways, whether it’s dating or just keeping up with your aunt on Facebook.

I’m glad you hit on the nostalgia thing, because “Every Single Night” sounds to me like it could be a Lionel Richie song.

DARREN:
That wasn’t the intention, but it certainly came out that way. The music has quite coincidentally ended up hearkening back to the sounds of the popular dance records of the time when we were young children, so late ’80s, early ’90s. That’s a nice coincidence, considering that the music is nostalgic thematically, and all the songs that we have are about growing up and, because we grew up in the era, it’s sort of appropriate.

What were your favorite computer games growing up, and what are they now?

CHUCK:
I loved Sim City 2000. I used to make cities and print them out, and I thought it was so fun. A lot of times I would just use cheat codes to make a dream city. The actual game is kind of grueling. You have to like, raise taxes and it’s…

DARREN:
A lot of responsibility.

CHUCK: A lot of responsibility. But I just loved making these big cityscapes and designing neighborhoods and dream parks and all that stuff. It was a really good place to let your imagination go wild.

DARREN: I was a big LucasArts fan. As a big Star Wars fan, that was like, Rebel Assault, Dark Forces, all Star Wars-themed games. And then now my favorite games would probably be like…. What are computer games now?

CHUCK:
They’re just called video games.

DARREN:
What games do you play on your phone even? I was really into Cut the Rope. I like strategy games.

Why did now feel like the best time for you to guys to do this together?

DARREN: It’s really overdue. I feel like if I’d waited any longer, it would’ve driven me mad.

CHUCK:
It’s something that we wanted to do for a long time because we wrote music together when we were teenagers. And it’s actually better now because we’re more experienced songwriters, more confident musicians. There’s some Picasso quote about keeping a child’s brain to create, and I feel like I can get into that headspace with Darren ’cause it’s like we’re just back in the basement writing songs.

DARREN: But we get to do it from an adult perspective. So we’re basically chasing our adolescence, but we wouldn’t have been able to make this music when we were young people. After Glee was over, there was a space that opened up, and I’d been planning to put out music for a long time, and it’s sort of a joke for people that have been following me that I’ve just never put anything out. And that has a lot to do with the fact that I was never happy with stuff, and it just never felt right. I was at a point where I was like, “OK, what do I have that I do feel cool about putting out?” This whole project is honoring our teenage selves and kind of fulfilling a promise that we made to ourselves forever ago. It’s a fresh start across the board. I look forward to the idea that if you didn’t know StarKid, if you didn’t know Glee, if you didn’t know Freelance Whales or any of us, that you can approach this music with full objectivity.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of working with your sibling?

DARREN: The only setback I would say is having there be more than one person. I’ve worked by myself for the most part with music. You don’t have to coordinate with anybody, you’re fine to do [red carpets and photoshoots alone]. But the irony of that is, yeah, you are alone. It’s all on you, and that can be a lot. So I don’t necessarily enjoy that. But what’s great about being with Chuck is that this is something we are both proud of. We share this endeavor. So when you’re walking the red carpet, it’s like, Chuck’s there. It’s fun. We’re a year and a half apart so we’ve always been really close. There’s no red tape to cut through when we’re collaborating on stuff, we can disagree without any bulls—, which is nice.

CHUCK: You know how sometimes you’re nicer to strangers than your own family? It’s almost like we get to cheat a little bit in the songwriting process ’cause we know each other so well, so there isn’t this level of compromising just for the sake of being nice because you just met this person and you have to write a song with them.

DARREN:
Chuck and I are in the same headspace musically, artistically, everything, because we grew up on the same stuff. It streamlines the artistic process and any arguments — which I can’t even call it that — are few and far between. It’s like, “What do you think of this?” “I don’t like it.” “OK, cool.” I want us to both like it.

Lost Boys Life is now streaming.

Something else I just remembered that may or may not mean anything. On Ricky's management website, it lists for Darren among actor/singer/etc
"PRODUCER - development of original TV series' for network and cable television"
[mention]hyphenatecreative.com[/mention] wrote:

DARREN CRISS IS A RENAISSANCE MAN. WE HAVE HELPED HIM TO build as a:

  • SINGER - self-released EP, signing a major record deal (Columbia), national sold out tour, gigs at some of the world's premiere concert venues (Carnegie Hall, Wembley Arena, Kennedy Center, Staples Center), setting up and managing sessions with songwriters and producers, formulating recording and marketing budgets
  • SONGWRITER - song placement in the series finale of GLEE leading to an Emmy nomination, {#}1{/#} position on Billboard's Cast Albums Chart
  • HOST - national TV hosting gig (Teen Choice Awards, WeDay)
  • ENTREPRENEUR - founder partner of NYC's first outdoor music festival for showtunes, ElsieFest, founding partner of the award winning Men's grooming company TheMotley.com, founding partner of the internet musical theater production company Starkid Productions
  • PRODUCER - development of original TV series' for network and cable television
  • ACTOR - ongoing role consultation and scouting, general meeting introductions, premiere party organization and sponsorship, contract negotiation, press relations

I don't know how long that has been listed there, and it would seem really random if he was somehow involved in developing a show about synchronised swimming, but I have no idea what else it could be referring to. Does it even refer to anything concrete or is it just an empty line to add some more flavour to an already diverse resume? But that would be extremly random.  :talking
Of course, even if it does refer to something concrete, it doesn't really have to mean anything. For example, I believe Jennifer Morrison (currently Emma on OUAT) had a producer credit on the first season of Glee basically just for bringing the initial script to Ryan's attention.

Any idea what it's about, am I missing something obvious here? It's just weird because everything else on the list is stuff everyone knows about.
There were several different threads on the BroadwayWorld.com message board, where Darren's performance was discussed.

First, there was the thread entitled "Darren Criss in Hedwig."

Here are a few comments that I haven't posted here yet from the thread of "Darren Criss in Hedwig" (from the BroadwayWorld.com message board).  Please note that there were some commentators on the BroadwayWorld.com message board who have a bias against Darren for various reasons (for no good reason other than the person posting likes to be a hater/person posting is a bitter Glee fan/person posting feels Darren is just a teen idol on a TV show/person posting resents Darren because he/she feels Darren has little theater experience/Darren followed John Cameron Mitchell--and many Hedhead fans idolized JCM deeply).  Additionally, please note that the BroadwayWorld.com message board in general can be quite critical/negative/biting.  However, for that reason, it's quite telling to read positive aspects of comments from some of those posting there.  In short, many folks on the BroadwayWorld.com Message boards generally are a tough crowd to please.  But for that reason, if folks begrudgingly let some praise of Darren slip out, you can be sure that praise is earned.

Really doubt he remembers with as many people he has interacted with.Yet, He makes them feel special.Watching him interact with them has made me a fan of his and I will support his work in the future because of that.I also thought he was very talented. The man moved around a lot...it appears he moves and dances around a lot more than previous Hedwigs and he sounded great doing it.Which is really incredible.I highly recommend seeing this. I walked by the Belasco on my way home from Hamilton Saturday. (So way after the show got out.). I have never seen so many people at a stage door. It was insanity. Even when Daniel Radcliffe was in How to Succeed there were not that many people--and I thought that was a zoo.

I did not think Darren's audience would overlap that much with the Hedwig audience but I was 100% wrong. There were so many young 20-something women when I saw the matinee on Saturday. The crowd was wild and full of energy--a great audience. As for Darren, he surpassed my expectations. I'm thrilled I made the decision to see this with him (especially after my dad was the lucky recipient of the car wash!) I expected him to be a good singer but too young and not enough angst. So wrong. I thought he was really incredible in this role and his age didn't bother me. As a side note, I felt bad for the numerous people after the matinee hanging out by the stage door. There were no barricades and no security so given the bedlam that evening I assume he did not come out. I don't think they'd be able to do it without a barricade.

It keeps it fresh and interesting for those who go repeatedly to catch each new Hedwig.

I really hope that whatever Criss does next on B'way that it's an original show and not a revival. He's amazingly talented and he still has great things ahead of him.

This person gave Darren a mixed review, but given that he/she admitted a grudge against Darren for some reason, I was impressed with some of the positive comments in his/her post.
dfrillsnedit wrote:
I ended up deciding to put my grudges against Darren to the side, and saw the show the night of the Supreme Court news. And I have to say, I was really happy I made the decision. Darren really surprised me, especially vocally. Though I wouldn't say that overall he was a "great Hedwig" but definitely a "good one" for sure.

My biggest issue with Darren's performance was his comic timing. Maybe it's because my past Hedwig's were MCH and JCM, both whom I thought got the comedy aspect of the role like complete bosses (along with the rest of the role, obviously), but Darren's comedic efforts felt very rushed. It seemed pretty obvious that he was suffering from the fear that he'd forget his lines, and thus raced through them at rapid speed, and in the process missed a few of the punchlines. He did though do an incredible job when it came to the dramatic aspects of the role, and was easily the angriest Hedwig I had seen. Also his overall performance when taking on Tommy was brilliant. He skyrocketed to my favorite Tommy that I've seen thus far, and brought new energy into that section of the show.

I also have to say that, next to JCM, Darren seemed the feel the most comfortable when taking on the "Punk Rock" energy of the role, probably due to his age. I really enjoyed whenever he would go into the more "hard" production numbers, like "Angry Inch" and "Exquisite Corpose". He definitely shined during those. Sadly, I think he was (like most have said) at his weakest during the slower songs, especially "Origin of Love". Was never truly terrible, but he didn't shine as much there as he did in the more upbeat/angsty numbers.

Overall, Darren was vocally a beast, and tried his hardest. Nothing to write home to mom about, but wasn't as bad as I expected, nor as bad as what he seemed to be doing during his first few performances. Now I'm beyond excited for Taye, who I know will take a while to get comfortable in the role, but I have hopes of bringing new energy into the show - and if Alan rumors are true, my #1 dream Hedwig will be crossed off the list.

I've seen 3 of the Hedwigs so far, JCM and Darren both multiple times. I found that Darren's performance varied more than JCM's. Maybe it was just the times I went, but I felt that JCM more or less maintained the same emotional tenor over his performances (which was perfectly fine because he was completely brilliant, and he did throw in a lot of improv bits). Darren vaciliated more in his moods as Hedwig and sometimes played it angrier and sometimes more light. He was pretty quick with coming up with lines off the cuff in response to the audience . . .

Agreed that Darren's weakest spot was the comedic timing, though it did improve as the show went on, it just can't compare to JCM's perfect dry delivery. His singing was my favorite of the Hedwigs I've seen or listened to, however, and he made some unique emotional choices. For instance when he spoke the bridge in Angry Inch he wasn't just angry but truly anguished. His Exquisite Corpse was also particularly intense. My favorite number of his though ended up being Wig in a Box, his youth worked in his favor for that one.

Cascade further clarifies his/her opinion:
cascade wrote:
"Also, I don’t feel that the fact that Darren altered how he played Hedwig (angry versus less angry) depending on the night, reflects badly on Darren. Theater does change from night to night; this is something often intentionally chosen by the actors on the stage."

I didn't mean it in a negative way at all. I actually found it really interesting. If it was the same exact performance every night I wouldn't have wanted to see it with him multiple times. I found him fantastic to watch.

Playbill wrote:The biggest goose bumps on Broadway can be had at the Belasco Theatre where Darren Criss is currently stopping the show eight times a week with Stephen Trask’s flaming anthem, “The Origin of Love” in Trask and John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig And The Angry Inch. Is there anything better than a ballad by a hard rock band? Somehow the roughness of the sound makes the sweet songs so much more tender. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that “The Origin of Love” is a summation of the central theme of Hedwig, we are all broken souls searching for our other half. This “ancient truth” is conveyed painfully and unforgettably.

Criss has two songs being featured in these final few episodes. “Well he’s so talented,” says Co-Executive Producer and Writer on the show, Michael Hitchcock when asked how this came about. “He’s so prolific and he’s so good, and honestly he talked to Ryan Murphy and said ‘Hey I’d love you to consider these’ and Ryan listened to them and just loved them, and one of them was kind of written for everyone and they adopted it to be just for one person. He’s a really good, careful, intelligent songwriter. And Broadway-esque musicals, musical film, musical television – there’s a shortage of those people that are that smart in the way that they write. So you know, I want all the stardom for him, Broadway stardom and all of that, but I also want to make sure he keeps writing all the time.”

Ellis goes on to say, “The very last thing I was on set for was the filming of the piano playing his song and it hadn’t even been written down, and the woman (Bonnie) who was playing the hands of Lea [Michele], of Rachel, [Darren] was calling out the chords as she was playing it. She sort of listened to the track once and was matching the track, and that was kind of miraculous the composer is like shouting music theory at Bonnie who is getting it right and playing while they film it.”

And as a result, when I heard the whole thing, I was like ‘Oh, this is going to work great, but this is way too long for television. I’m going to have to cut this.’ And I looked at it and I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t look at anything, because there was a version that was verse, chorus, and then out, and all the meat is in the second verse. So, I was like we can’t get rid of that. And I was like am I just getting up my own ass? Am I just being an overly protective writer? That’s a very typical tragedy: we get so attached to things. And so I didn’t want that to be the case. I wanted to be open to the idea of cutting things. So, after we shot it, I think they saw what was really hitting Lea and what was hitting us in the room. I really humbly, you know, just on bended knee, asked our directors and producers, ‘if you can find anywhere in your heart to keep things, because again, this is no vanity here, I just think if you cut certain parts (I like had it highlighted), if you cut certain parts, just cut the whole thing. You know, there’s no point. This song has no value anymore if you just decide to chop it up for time. I’d rather it not be in there at all if you need to cut the second verse or this.’ Ryan kept a significant chunk of it and the stuff that we cut is more extraneous stuff that’s more musical than it is lyrical content. To me, that whole thing was lyrical and that’s why it hits us or hits the episode in the way it does."
