I had an amazing night in San Francisco with 2 of my best friends! We went to see the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch starring one of our favorite actors, Darren Criss! He was absolutely amazing and the play was very exciting to watch! However, nothing could have prepared me for the excitement of meeting Darren outside the theater. It was worth waiting roughly an hour. He was kind, friendly, and took the time to sign our programs. It was definitely a night to remember, made possible by the lovely Lacey! angelnieva  I watched Darren in New York, roughly a year ago (as Hedwig), and I cannot explain how incredible of a performance this man has put on both times. To the tears, laughs, and me literally jumping out of my seat from excitement, I have never witnessed such stellar presentation. This person (A Canadian in NYC)  had seen Darren in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway.  The name is familiar to me ( I had read posts on the BWW message board, about Darren in Hedwig on Broadway), and I remember this person previously had some negative things to say about Darren's performance.   Anyway, he/she wrote this recently regarding Darren in the Hedwig tour.

And then, he/she saw Darren in the Sunday matinee show yesterday (10/9/16) in SF, and said this:

They have great chemistry. Whatever the reason he really was amazing. He's totally owning the role. Changing up the songs just enough to make it his own. His ballads were strong and emotional. I was so impressed. And I'm happy for him. To perform so strongly in his home town - kudos all around. 

He has catapulted up to be my fave Hedwig at the moment... we will see what Lena has in store in a couple of hours! 

The set is modest but works really well. They do a lot with the lights.  I actually preferred it to Belasco. 

Managed to dish out some digs to Donald. Well done. Also the Blue Angels are in town for fleet week. Hedwig noted " I blew angels before; they were never that loud"

Note:  He/she also wrote a post highly praising Lena's evening performance on Sunday.   I have read a few comments about her performance last night , and it sounds like many of the people in attendance were fans of her (with one person commenting that for the performance she saw with Darren, it was a relatively quiet crowd that seemed to be people who were not familiar with the show, but who patronized SHN Golden Gate Theatre).   The person above (A Canadian in NYC) said that in part because of the adoring audience, Lena's performance felt like a party, a celebration of her playing the lead role of Hedwig well, a role that she had expressed wanting to play for a while.  Because she is playing a relatively small number of shows, eight (versus Darren's 50 or so shows on the tour), it's more likely that her shows will be more concentrated with her fans, and that fans of Darren will be spread more thinly over his larger number of shows.   For Hedwig and the Angry Inch, audience interaction/enthusiasm is so crucial.  (For those Darren fans seeing him in this tour, be sure to try to help him out by being interactive when the rest of the audience is quiet.)

I think for Lena, there will be several reasons why I am sure she will win rave reviews (both from the media and fan-based):   Because she had won a Tony for the role of Yitzhak in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway (and thus she is highly respected by both the media and Hedwig fans for such a great achievement); because she is beloved by Hedwig fans/Hedheads for having been a talented and constant presence for a year in the Hedwig family on Broadway (longer than any of the male actors who played Hedwig, except for John's presence in the Hedwig family); because she is one of the few women to play the lead role of Hedwig (I think only the second woman, after Ally Sheedy); because for the first time in this show's history, one actor is playing both the  role of Hedwig and Yitzhak in the same production; and of course, because her voice is most likely the most trained voice of all the actors who played Hedwig on Broadway, with a large range and great power (as for actors who played Yitzhak, I have to say Rebecca is truly impressive too).  I am sure her dramatic scenes are good as well, although I have not had the privilege of seeing her in the show (but I have a Hedwig friend who adores and reveres her).   To keep things in perspective as a fan of Darren, Darren continues to get wonderful comments from audience members, as well as good reviews in this tour, just as he did on Broadway.  If anything, he sounds like he has fine-tuned his performance, if one is to take the word of this person (A Canadian in NYC) who had mixed feelings about Darren after having seen him on Broadway, yet after seeing Darren in this tour, now reveres Darren's performance to the degree that he is near the top of this person's list of favorite Hedwig actors.

Sorry for being long-winded.  I just wanted to comment that this situation of having two different actors play the lead character in the same time period does feel unusual.  However, I am going to just enjoy the praise that Darren receives from media and from the audience, as well as enjoy how much Darren is relishing being able to play his dream role just a little longer.    As for Lena, she is so talented and I am sure that the praise that she receives is well-deserved.  I am glad for her that she has the opportunity to shine in this role, like the men who played this iconic character on Broadway.

Jeremy, I'm glad I'm not the only one.     But still, it seems many of Darren's fans would love to chat with him/take a pic with him.   Everyone is different in this regard, I guess, which is all fine.

backstabberlie I was shaking as I walked up to @darrencriss. I’m a HUGE fan, but my cousin Nicholas was a way bigger fan. A lot of you know he passed away in January, and I have been trying so hard to be just “okay”. All I could do when I walked up was spill my guts to Darren real quick, cry, and show him the thumbprint necklace I have of Nick’s. On the back of the medallion, I have a quote from glee. He grabbed Nick’s thumbprint and said “I’m holding it super tight!” Before I could start crying, he threw his arms up to the sky and said “NICHOLAS!!!! THANK YOU FOR THE AMAZING SHOW!!!!!!” He continued to write out on my playbill “Natalie, thank you so much! You all probably know this, but Chris Lorentz has been a long-time friend, high school classmate, and family friend of Darren's. He also helped produce Darren's "Human" CD and even did some work on Glee's "Candles" recording with Darren in Chris' home recording studio. Oh, and he's been played in the band for several of Darren's gigs and his tour.  

I really appreciate the background you gave on Chris Lorentz.  I still haven't mastered keeping straight all of Darren's friends, so I appreciate your refreshing my memory.  Wow, high school friend!  So nice that Darren keeps in touch with his old friends.  Chris must be an engineer then, since he helped produce Darren's Human CD and helped recordthe Candles song.  Did he record Darren's CD in Chris's own room too, if you happen to know?     He just had a wedding this summer too, right?  

I think it says something when someone has reached celebrity status, yet stays grounded and keeps in touch with the friends that he had before he became famous.   I really like that about Darren.

You all probably know this, but Chris Lorentz has been a long-time friend, high school classmate, and family friend of Darren's. He also helped produce Darren's "Human" CD and even did some work on Glee's "Candles" recording with Darren in Chris' home recording studio. Oh, and he's been played in the band for several of Darren's gigs and his tour.

Okay, I know I'm literally preaching to the choir here, but look at these photos. There are a lot of people there, but he doesn't just sign and move on as other celebrities would (understandably) do in such a situation.  As many of these pics and the corresponding fan comments will atest to, Darren takes the time to engage and, as he says, "have a moment" with the each person he meets of that stage door crowd and fans he meets elsewhere. What a special gift to his fans. This was one of the things (of many, many) that made me admire him so, and continues to delight and seal my Darren fangirl heart every single time. He is such an appreciative, gracious, generous class act.

Cute cupcakes!   The person posting is the same person who posted about Darren's SF shirt.  She is a costume designer, who was nominated for a Tony Award in the category Best Costume Design for a Play, for her work  Hedwig and the Angry Inch, on Broadway.

Darren looked so happy and relaxed at the stage door yesterday. I'm amazed that he could do that after such an intense performance.  But then again, he is Darren Criss. 

ha!  Darren is so full of energy, that not only did the intense performance of Hedwig at the preview and doing stagedoor not make a dent in his boundless amount of energy (he is the Energizer Bunny after all), but he went to an event after.  That's Darren.    He has a day off today, so he could sleep in.

I enjoyed reading the comments from sacteachv2.  Thanks for posting.   It's nice to get confirmation that Darren is doing the SF and L.A. stops only.  I was wondering if he was going to do the San Diego location, but I guess not.   And I agree, Lilikoiluv, Lena easily could change her mind if she wants later in terms of extending her shows.  Glad she had a good dress rehearsal.

I especially liked how he changed the James Franco line.  We know people were thinking it, so hey, let's be upfront about it.    And I like how he is using a different reference to Glee too, with the Lea comment.  New jokes keeps the show fresh.

Loved everything about this first show! The SF references were great and the combo of Lena and Darren was amazing. It seemed like Darren hadn’t taken any time off- he was right back in the role without hesitation. He got some fun lines in - talked about Darren Criss, referenced Lea Michele and got a dig in about If/Then. So glad the “Chris Col-fur” line is gone. Some elements were a little different but they worked. Not used to major cheering after WLT curious to see if that changes. Both Michael and Darren confirmed that LA is it for Darren and Lena and there will be a new group for other cities. Pretty much knew that but hearing it directly was good. Stage door was interesting but Darren made sure to sign for everyone. Going back on Tuesday and can’t wait!

Her comments on how strong the performances were and how well the show went make me so happy. It seems that she also got confirmation from both Darren and Michael Mayer that Darren and Lena will be doing just San Francisco and Los Angeles. Things could change, I guess, especially if Lena's performances go well--she seems to have had a fantastic (as we all knew) final dress rehearsal last night with family and friends.

x  I think this is khal-blaine on tumblr. She has a whole bunch of Glee memorabilia, lots of Blaine's clothes, including Blaine's Dalton Blazer from the Ellen Show.  She flew in that morning for the show, and then flew out that night so she could be at work at 8 a.m. this morning!
